The 110 postboxes repainted to celebrate Britain's Olympic and Paralympic champions are to remain gold on a permanent basis.
Royal Mail has announced that each box is to have a plaque fitted, naming the athlete in whose honour it was painted.
It is the first time in the company's history that the traditional red box colour has been changed permanently to mark an historic achievement.
Royal Mail said the boxes had become "cherished local landmarks".
The first plaque has been attached to the golden postbox in Stratford, east London, home to the London 2012 Olympic Park.
It was unveiled by the MP for West Ham, Lyn Brown, on Thursday.
Postboxes have been repainted gold in the UK in the hometowns of every gold medal-winning Team GB Olympic and Paralympic athlete.
Royal Mail said the golden boxes had attracted thousands of visitors, and pictures of the boxes have been posted to social media websites.
The most northerly golden postbox can be found in Lossiemouth, Moray, in honour of rower Heather Stanning.
Meanwhile, a golden postbox in honour of her rowing partner, Helen Glover, is the most southerly on the British mainland and can be found in Penzance, Cornwall.
Moya Greene, chief executive of Royal Mail Group, said she was "delighted" at the success of "this simple idea".
She added: "The gold postboxes gave communities even more opportunity to mark the successes of Team GB and Paralympics GB - and became a part of local celebrations of London 2012 across the UK.
"I am pleased to confirm that these postboxes will be kept gold permanently."
Royal Mail also produced stamps to celebrate each gold medal, which are available to purchase until the end of the year.
well they do look nice
That's nice, that one in the picture looks like it's had a dodgy paintjob though.

They probably got some guy from the local pub to do it for cheap.
posh

Dave is a legend
I think they look nice, but could be better with a bit of black added the outlines.
well they do look nice
I think they look Ugly as fuck, too much gold. What would look better is if the top was gold and the rest the normal red.

They're old as hell if I remember rightly many of them have been around since the mid 1800's.
I asked someone if they were going to be permanent and he said no. What a liar.
that looks awful
It looks so tacky and cheap, might as well keep to the original look. at least it actually held importance since it is a very big British thing to have red postboxes...
Should make it red but do a gold ring around it or something. Entirely gold looks ugly.
gonna be old gold in future.
I wish they were chromed, shiny gold like this Bugatti:

Cause right now they look like a shitty, low-saturation, pastel green/brown.

They are. All.
Didn't some other guy paint a postbox which was actually better looking?
That paintjob looks a little... Bad.
This is cool, they're a cute little memento of the event and the people.

Some guy painted one, then the Royal Mail stripped off his paintjob and repainted it themselves.

All I know that Royal Mail are terrible at painting.

They don't look that bad really.
"remain golden permanently"
Good luck.
I give them a year tops, before they are totally wreaked.
British Identity Status : Destroyed
Why not paint the telephone boxes green? The black cabs can be sprayed yellow.

If any country has an identity based on gimmicks that you sell to tourists, then they don't have an identity.

Yeah celebrating British success at the Olympics is truly the death knell of nationalism

We are an tiny island of immigrants. We didn't really have a 'British' identity to begin with

Telephone boxes generally look more like this anyway:

Except normally all the other glass panels are broken too. And the interior is covered with piss and / or beer.
BT are removing most phone boxes anyway, it costs them a lot to maintain something which no one uses.
They've removed the phones and sold most of the red ones to companies who will replace the glass when it's constantly broken.
See what I mean? The British youth no longer care. Bet your grandparents would be so proud of you. They tried to keep the place tidy after all. The picture of a telephone box with broken glass sums it all up for me. It's just left like that with people walking past it and accepting it as a normal occurrence.
Rate me dumb all you like but I still care for the streets I walk on, I care for the people, the history, the stories and famous "little gimmicks" and I care for the respect our ancestors earned in the many wars they've fought and died in to allow you all to smash phone boxes in on a drunken night out.
With November 11th coming up you scum should take a look at the culture you've created and be ashamed.
Let the chavs rate me dumb now, go on, I'm taking a note of how many there are for reference.
