Facebook: Authoritarian tool? - General

This facebook/Social Networking thing has always seemed stupid to me but I never really cared about it . But then I began thinking that the governments that kept information on there citizens are almost all authoritarian societies. If the USA/First World Country ever kept information like this them self's (IE: Names,Friends,DoB,Home and latest activity) It would result in mass civil unrest and protests, If even they where capable of doing that which do to the strain on intelligence agency today would be nowhere near the point where they could do that. What do you guys think about it?
