So anyway, I've had my Ibanez for 2 years and have played it extensively as I left my Squier to take dust under my bed. I originally bought it for $350 and I'm looking to get something about 500-600. I'm Looking to either a Jackson Dinky or an Ibanez S. I'll mainly be doing Shred and Technical type stuff like Dream Theater and Paul Gilbert but will be doing some Other stuff as well.
"Ibanez" isn't too descriptive. What sort of Ibby do you have?
It's an RG350
Would you consider 7 strings? You can get a made in Japan RG7620 for around $450 used, they're pretty much unbeatable in that price range. Chuck a DiMarzio Crunchlab or Evolution in the bridge and you'll have a monster. If you dig playing your current Ibanez you should feel at home on an Ibanez 7, unless you have no interest in them at all. I bought my RG7620 online without ever really having played a 7 before, only knowing I liked Ibby sixers. Best decision I've ever made.

That way, you're not only buying a new guitar, you're kind of expanding your territory.
My brother owns a Jackson Dinky, and all I can say is that it's an excellent guitar for its price. It will not disappoint you.
My asshole of a dad thinks that 7 strings are useless and won't let me get one even if I use my own money. He obviously doesn't know what he's talking about.

They expand what you can play.
Reason with your asshole dad then. If anything, 7 strings make 6 strings obsolete because you can play everything a 6 can play with the extra options the 7th string gives you. My personal testimony is that I really struggled to write music with my sixer, most of it was really generic sounding crap. I picked up a 7 and wrote a bunch of stuff I was really happy with, incorporating all the strings. It just really got me interested in playing guitar again. I've been playing for 9 years and I guess I just needed something a bit fresh. The downside is now I want an 8er :v:, but I still feel that 7 is the perfect number of strings. I feel like 8 will force me to just rip off Meshuggah, which is fine cos I just want one to mess around on. The 7 is forcing me to be original because it's still quite a niche instrument although it is gaining popularity. And show him this: That may be an 8 string guitar but it still proves a point. Why limit yourself to 6 strings when you can have more and write some crazy awesome music?
I reasoned with him enough. Back when I was 10 years old I was really into Korn (Makes me sad as I now listen to stuff like In Flames:smith:) and I wanted a 7 string like hell. I was wanting an RG7321 and I asked him and I got turned down. I was sad :smith:
Yeah but that's Korn, they may as well play downtuned sixers. Your dad sounds like a real jerk, what right does he have to tell you what you can and cannot play? If it's your money just go out and buy one. Fuck him.
Maybe I can show him some Steve Vai, Also, He said he'll fetch me a guitar next year when we visit Philippines. Don't know if it'll be a 7 string or not but whatever. He also got pissed off for a week at my mum for going to a Casino. I thought he would leave :saddowns:. Also, he doesn't trust eBay just because my RG350 didn't come in Set-Up.
I don't know if your father is particularly stubborn or what, but if all that's holding him back is that he thinks seven strings = Korn, there's plenty of seven string guitar music that isn't chug-chug-chug. But all of it is METAAAAAAL!
But all of it is METAAAAAAL!
Even though you probably know that isn't true, most of the stuff I've written on my 7 isn't very metal at all. http://filesmelt.com/downloader/newsong.mp3 BRUTAL.
It's telling me the file isn't there. I'll just assume that all of your seven-string material is some weird fusion of bossa nova and Tuva throat-singing.
He just thinks there isn't a difference between 6 strings and 7s besides that they have another string.
He just thinks there isn't a difference between 6 strings and 7s besides that they have another string.
Well... up front, there isn't. Unless you want to play alot of metal/progressive (insert genre)/jazz, there really isn't much of a use for a 7-string guitar at all. It can't hurt to have anyway, but it's not a make-or-break feature for any other kind of player, at least in my eyes. With progressive metal as my favorite genre, I intend to buy a 7-string as soon as I can afford it, but that's just me.
Does your dad actually know anything about guitars? And why should he decide what guitar you buy, anyway - it's your money.
He just thinks there isn't a difference between 6 strings and 7s besides that they have another string.
Then there should be no problem.
To everyone saying "show him this" Show him Animals as leaders and Gaia by Devin townsend. And Keith Merrow First video he uses an 8 but I don't think he uses the F# string. Hopefully these will convince your dad otherwise. Either way just buy the bitch with your own cash.
I really want a 5 string bass (I don't have enough money at the moment) because I really like the differences between the highs and the lows and want to expand that.
