Croatian teenager wakes up from a coma speaking fluent German

[release]Croatian doctors are baffled after a teenage girl who fell into a mysterious coma woke up speaking fluent German.
The parents of the 13-year-old from the southern town of Knin said their daughter had only just started studying German at school and had been trying to read German books and watch German television - but had never been that good in German.
But since waking up the teenager has been unable to speak Croatian and even refused it, but communicates only in perfect German far superior to her mastery of the language she had when she was taken ill. [/release]
Split's KB Hospital director Dujomir Marasovic said they were still trying to find out what caused the mysterious coma and why the girl has apparently forgotten how to speak Croatian.
Marasovic added: 'You never know when recovering from such a trauma how the brain will react. Obviously we have some theories although at the moment we are limited in what we can say because we have to respect the privacy of the patient.'
He said the condition was so unusual that numerous doctors have examined the 13-year-old including German-speaking doctors to try and get to the bottom of the mystery.
Nurse Marika Lenovic, 28, said: 'The case has attracted a lot of interest, not just among the media but also among medical professionals.'
The girl is still being cared for at the hospital and is receiving regular visits from her family although there has reportedly been a large degree of frustration at the fact that they can no longer communicate with each other.
Hospital staff have even had to use an interpreter to translate the teenager's words to her family although apparently when they speak to her in Croatian she does understand - but she cannot respond in anything other than German.
Psychiatric expert dr Mijo Milas who has been involved in the case said: 'In earlier times this would have been referred to as a miracle, we prefer to think that there must be a logical explanation - its just that we haven't found it yet.
'There are references to cases where people who have been seriously ill and perhaps in a coma have woken up being able to speak other languages - sometimes even the Biblical languages such as that spoken in old Babylon or Egypt - at the moment though any speculation would remain just that - speculation - so it's better to continue tests until we actually know something.'
The teenager was only in the coma for 24 hours, and it's thought it may have been prompted by extremely high body temperature.
Wow, it's pretty amazing, I hope we can hear more about this case.

Fuck ze boxes! I'm not afraid!
Remember when the Nazis invaded Croatia? Yeah, me neither. But maybe Hitler infected her from beyond the grave. Just maybe. It's plausible. I've seen it happen before. In fact, in my line of work, we get this all the time. I'm a firefighter, by the way. Hitler's always setting Jewish orphanages on fire. It's a rewarding job, but the best reward is always just seeing the little Jewish babies look up at me through the flames, and I know that I'm the only hope that baby's got. Most people may snap under the kind of pressure that I face but it's easier than most imagine.
Yeah so anyway hitler sodomy.
How very interesting... I wonder how such things happen?

why are people complaining. we would have no news if nobody posted anything.
This reminds me of the guy who came out of a coma speaking fluent Italian, accent and everything.
Awesome, I was always shit at German at school. Maybe if I'd gone into a coma I might have done a little better at it. :buddy:
Okay, maybe not. :frown:

Why the fuck do you care about someone posting news threads?
They're not even bad threads.

oh fuck your avatar
that episode of doctor who was creepy D:
She was probably subconsciously absorbing the language and information through her studies and books and TV but just couldn't get it, and when she was in the coma, her brain started sorting it out. I've heard of this happening before.
Wish I could magically speak another language without going into a coma :frown:
ON TOPIC
I came into this thread to say I thought this was crazy but I got sidetracked, so I'll say it now : this is crazy.
How the fuck does that work?
Did her brain recite the words over and over again and hard wire the language into itself or something?
Bitch, this be screwed up.
Well, they should perfect this method for later "on purpose use".
We need to study this, learn what causes it, then utilize it. You could learn to play the guitar instantly, or get a college degree in a day.
2nd coming of hitler, His soul lives on :tinfoil:
Reminds me of this guy a few years ago who made a thread saying that he woke up with an Irish accent.
Wow WTF
She probably unlocked her subconcious German knowledge - you can hear a language but not know it consciously, as shown in the case of a small Austrian child who spoke English in his sleep and was later found to be sleep-reciting a speech by Churchill that he'd heard on the radio whilst asleep once.
I wish something like this would happen to me. Well, maybe except for the coma.
There have been cases of people waking up with different accents, knowing different languages perfectly. As Splurgy said it gets locked into the subconscious and just 'opens' itself up somehow, makes you wonder the effects of a human being if we could fully control our brains in a way we wanted. Adding onto what Splurgy again said - there are also a few cases of people with autism whom have excellent brain abilities like being able to play a song perfectly on a instrument just by hearing it once, being able to instantly do mathematical calculation in mere seconds on what day it will be on the 22nd of February 2113 etc.
I think there was a case last year about a Polish man waking up and being able to speak perfect English, perfect for his immigration to Britain.

Reminds me of the research that some people did on the immune system - apparently it could be organised to be far more powerful, the only catch being you die because it attacks itself.

I thought it wore off after a week.
The thing is, I think if the human race as a whole started putting effort into studying things like this,
and stopped fucking fighting we could be so much more advanced as a species. Kinda like the "plot"
of the old star trek, if we eliminated hate, racism, and religion as a whole, we could expand exponentially.
Awesome. I wish I could go into a coma and speak fluent french.
Save my ass in my exams.
She's the reincarnation of Hitler.
Being in a coma is just like sleeping, and during sleep the brain re-arranges whatever information it gathered before sleep, since this coma lasted a long time the brain had a long time to re-arrange all the information it could find, including all the studies she did on german language.
This is why people tell you to sleep alot when studying.

Aww but.. If we did that what would we do with all the cool helicopters and rockets and shit!... Some of them are damn Badass :frown:

This is true. Your memory is literally a path that an action potential takes. The more you recite information the more that path is used and therefore the more likely it is kept.
