US food safety officials have taken steps to ban the use of trans fats, saying they are a threat to health.
Trans fat, also known as partially hydrogenated oils, are no longer "generally recognised as safe", said the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The regulator said a ban could prevent 7,000 deaths and 20,000 heart attacks in the US each year.
The FDA is opening a 60-day consultation period on the plan, which would gradually phase out trans fats.
Treating the symptom not the cause.
Guess I won't have to read the "No trans fats!" label anymore.
You can't stop me from getting trans fats!
I'll just partially hydrogenate my own oils, and turn everything I eat into a globular mess.
And how do they propose to actually implement this? manufacture a device capable of magically removing all trans fats from whatever gets put in it?

No more partially hydrogenated oils...
They add partially hydrogenated oils to food to make it taste more delicious. Transfats are both natural and man-made, and they are trying to ban the man-made transfats from being added to food.
So there will only be cis fats now? wow discrimination

It's pretty simple: you tell manufacturers to stop using them and then you fine them if they don't.
So there will only be CIS fats now?
I am transfat and this oppresses me. They should really check something
(hint: it's their privilege)
maybe we should let people decide for themselves what they can eat or something idk
Man, I am getting vague memories of that American Dad episode right now.
Part of being free is the freedom to make bad choices. Sorry, but this type of thing is literally being the nanny state.
I'm fine with giving people information, but banning it is simply ridiculous.

There are reasons food regulations exist.
So instead of promoting healthier food choices, they let people eat the same junk but remove the trans fat. This country is afraid to say anything because someone, somewhere will be offended by it.
Trans fats are the worst fats that are still used in food in the western world. Banning them isn't infringing on your freedoms - other fats can be used in their place. Other fats that are less likely to give you a heart attack/etc
Stop being pissy about using higher quality fats infringing on your freedom to eat cheap shit that'll eventually kill you

I assume there's a reason the use those fats? Possibly because they're cheaper, taste better, etc. Every choice has good and ban components. If it were 100% negative no one would use them.
Amerifit
i think its clear trans fats kill by now....

these people are stupid and insist on cooking everything 2-3 times in trans fats and their spokesperson died after only a year of eating at the restaurant

Trans fats are cheap to mass produce. That's the only reason they're used. You know what other fats are cheap? Chinese gutter oil. Would you want to use that to cook your food?
Selecting a shit fat because you don't want to pay a few more cents per litre is a shitty idea.
actually...they cheaper to produce but really when the industry changes, the price on the legal fats will be cheaper

but, but... my margins! that's cruel!

The transphobia truly is disgusting.
...In the vegetable and animal kingdoms, fatty acids generally have cis (as opposed to trans) unsaturations.[1]...
Who gave you the power and authority to make that choice for people? Let people choose what they want to pay for instead of forcing them to live by your standards.

If you don't force companies to use other fats a huge number will pick trans fats to make more profit and guess who doesn't know about it 95% of the time?
The poor consumer who then dies a year later of a heart attack. Why would you want to use an unsafe fat in your food?
Wow, just goes to show America is still unfriendly to anything with trans in it!

Did you purposefully ignore the part where I said I want the government to provide information?
It's so funny to me, you are still in that elitist mindset where you need to take care of the ignorant mindless masses who can't learn and make choices on their own.
All these priveledge jokes are shite and have gotten very unfunny very quickly, to be serious though, I'm surpised these haven't already been banned, trans-fats are beyond "unhealthy" and I can't see this getting any opposition since it would basically be saying that you want people to get heart-attacks when you look at the figures.
Better late than never.
Also, you're giving a false choice. The choice isn't:
A) Eat unhealthy food
B) Eat healthy food
There's a whole lot more to it than that. It would be like telling someone who drives a small civic, "Hey, do you WANT to drive an unsafe car?!?" Obviously there are other factors involved.
Treating the symptom not the cause.
Huh? How is transfat a symptom? Are you suggesting that it came to be as a result of a problem?
