So, how about we just get straight to it, what the hell is this.
The Gathering is a once-a-year computer party, where people who like games, being with friends, chilling out, watching shows and attending seminars gather and have fun.
The Gathering is about much more than just sitting in front of your computer. The shows are pretty cool, there are a few cool guests, good deals on hardware, an opportunity to meet Internet friends, and much more.
Why care? Well if you're interested in computers and/or being with cool people, it's a great place to hang out for a week. Forget all about school, work, cleaning your room or whatever, and just have fun!

The Gathering is in Vikingskipet in the city of Hamar, Norway.

Getting there can be done in many ways, like getting someone to drive you / driving, taking the train or maybe taking a bus which is some times organized by other participants from certain locations.

The Gathering is arranged every year during easter (4th - 8th April). This means most people are off school/work, so a lot of people get a chance to participate.

If you've already got some friends you're going with, that's fine we can all sit together. If you want to sit near other Facepunchers, put me as the seater and I will organize the whole smash.
If you're a first-timer, that's also fine, we're all friendly (I'm pretty sure).

What's the price?
In 2012 the admission fee is 990 + 47 NOK, which with the current ridiculous exchange rate with dollars is about $192.5
Foreigner tickets are about $87.6
How old do I have to be?
If you're 15 or less you need a special form signed by your parents, but there's no set age limit.
How fast is the Internet?
Very fast, at a good moment you might get speeds like this:

How do I find you guys?
We'll figure that out when we get there. We'll probably meet at the café or something.
Why is this in Norway and not somewhere bigger or cooler?
Because Norway is amazing and only Scandinavians know how to arrange proper computer parties.
How big is this shit?
Over 5000 participants each year, second largest computer party in the world, only smaller than the Swedish "Dreamhack" (But The Gathering is in one big hall and not several smaller ones, so this obviously makes it better, fuck off swedes).
Are there girls?
Yes.
Does it smell?
No, the hall is a sports arena, so it's very well ventilated, and most people are (believe it or not) at least slightly hygienic.
Is alcohol allowed?
Nope, this is advertised as a cultural and drug/alcohol free alternative to other stuff kids do in their free time. This means you pay no tax (or whatever you call it) on your ticket, and it can be used as an argument when you ask your parents.
I'm hungry, what do I eat?
You've got several options:
1: Buy a food ticket, this gives you breakfast and dinner on the second, third and fourth day (you arrive on the first and leave on the fifth, so there's nothing on those days). <- I've done this every time I've been there, and it's a brilliant solution.
2: Buy hamburgers, pizza or other shit at the stands inside the arena. Also a viable option, but the food isn't quite as good and healthy as the food ticket, and it does get expensive.
3: Buy food at the stores in the area. Also a good option, there is one store open the first (and maybe a couple of the other days, I'm not sure), and another store open all days (including Sunday). Get something to drink, snacks, bread and butter and stuff and whatever you need.

Can I sneak into the girls showers?
No you perv, the girls showers requires a special entry card you get at the information desk.
Where do you sleep?
You can sleep in the seating areas at the sides of the arena, or you can sleep in the heated sleeping tent outside.
What do I have to bring?
From gathering.org
▸ The ticket/ticket number. We say this every year, and every year hundreds of people forget their ticket. Do not leave home without it or you may end up spending this Easter on the streets of Hamar. A mighty cold pleasure we might add. Don't forget to complete the pre check in, either.
▸ Valid identification (picture ID, driver’s license, ATM-card).
▸ A consent form from your parents if you are under 16 years old (Consent form).
▸ Your beloved computer.
▸ A (minimum) 10 meter TP (Twisted Pair) network cable.
▸ Power cable, sound cables, monitor cable, power pad.
▸ A mouse and, for those who can't live without it, a mouse pad.
▸ Headphones.
▸ Network card that supports TP.
▸ Tooth brush, shaving equipment, soap, and deodorant.
▸ Towels, to bring two is advised, Drying off with your t-shirt is useless.
▸ Clean clothes, two or three sets.
▸ Socks in all shapes and colors, especially the warm ones as the concrete floor gets cold
▸ A bag or two to have the dirty laundry in.
▸ Food. We recommend that you buy some sliced bread + things to have on it. Food will be sold at the party, but living on those torched lumps of meat might be a bit expensive in the long run.
▸ Stuff to drink! We highly recommend water - it's good for you!
▸ An Easter-egg filled with your favorite sweets. It's a holiday, and sugar is of the essence.
▸ Money, money and more money! This is very important! And no, we will not lend you any.
▸ Cell phone, so you can call your mom every time you feel a bit homesick.
▸ Sleeping bag, mattress, pillow.
▸ Floppy disks and/or a USB memory stick.
▸ Pen and paper.
▸ A camera, because no one will believe you when you say that you've been to the second largest computer party in the world.
▸ Magazines/books. Nice to have on the journey to and from Vikingskipet.
▸ Sanitary pads and tampons (if you are female)
▸ Condoms/birth control. However, we do not recommend carnal pleasures in public areas as they are very crowded.
▸ A bag or two for trash. We like it nice and clean. :-P
▸ Any and all medication you may need during the party. You should also carry any necessary medical documentation on you at all times.
▸ Duct tape, shouldn't need an explanation but if you must; it's really usefull to shield your wrists from the table and thus preventing your wrists from looking emo (Nb. Don't use this on other people!)
You will NOT need
▸ Refrigerator
▸ Microwave oven
▸ Water boiler
▸ Speakers suitable for The Who concerts. Don't worry - we'll bring the noise :)
Why did you forget this one question I had, but remember all the other shit I don't care about?
I'm sorry, please ask your question in the thread and I'll do my best to answer.

Now ask questions, tell me if you're going, and chat about how this is for nerdy ugly smelly geeks (or don't).

I've never been to The Gathering, but I live like within walking distance of where it's held. Maybe I'll drop by, photograph and see if I recognize any internet friends, like the OP.
EDIT:
Okay, it's more like 170 kilometers away, so not exactly the walking distance I thought it was but, uh...
Uh...
Trains.

Looks a bit messy. We are not allowed to sleep anymore, correct? I swear, I wouldn't be surprised if there are reports of drowsy people knocking soda over other people's computers. Imagine going all the way to Norway for that drama. Still, besides Black Metal, gives me another reason to visit Norway.

Triple stacked plastic chairs master race.
after reading the "What to bring list" I noticed in that pic that there are some fucking huge speakers.
Looks a bit messy. We are not allowed to sleep anymore, correct?
Of course you're allowed to sleep, just not in your chairs because it's not healthy for your back and probably some other reasons.
Triple stacked plastic chairs master race.
Indeed.
It seems like it's only worth it for norwegians and scandinavians to go there.
Do any of the people there even speak English?
There are some people from other countries, but most people are definitely Norwegian.
Anyone who can confirm they come from outside of Norway gets to buy the foreigner ticket instead of the regular one.
It's still a ton of money to even fly there, not mentioning the difficult transportation of the tower, monitor, speakers and keyboard.
True, it is first and foremost an event for people who don't live too far away.
It's still a ton of money to even fly there, not mentioning the difficult transportation of the tower, monitor, speakers and keyboard.
You think flying from Hungary is expensive, try Minnesota.
It's still a ton of money to even fly there, not mentioning the difficult transportation of the tower, monitor, speakers and keyboard.
Don't worry, everything is incredibly cheap in Norway. Come here and see for yourself.

I do not know one person who doesn't speak English in Norway, ok maybe 1 or 2, but those are only the retards who drop out of school after lower secondary school.
Also I really wanna go sometime, but my body can't handle 4 days of junk food and little sleep.
If I had the money, I'd be there. Not with a full fledged PC though, probably a laptop instead.
Ohh, hot guy with fork
Also don't know if sit with Facepunch or guys from last years class. Please decide for me.
You can all sit with us :D
You can all sit with us :D
Then it is decided. I shall sit with Facepunch.
Unless the Trysilians bribe me, of course.. Something which is very unlikely :v:
The who nows?

Anyways, this year we should try actually sitting together, last year I were sitting with some friends but I don't even think they'll come this year.
So put me on a "Confirmed" list whenever you make that.
i'm not one to go to these kinda things, but i feel like it would be chill as fuck

A lot of people don't care for that rule. I suggest headphones with good isolation if you're going to this.

I would never trust the TG crew with running the sound, it'd only be "Snakke litt med deg" or Banana Phone.
That was the only things they ever played, that, and one rick-roll to wake everyone up, EXTREMELY LOUD
[editline]1st September 2011[/editline]
They even went so far that they came, hijacked my friends mega sound system, and put on "Snakke litt med deg".

I sat here:

I'm the guy on the lower right, look at that sexy hair right there.
The top left is the people I was with.
Wish I could come but Norway is quite a ways away from me.
Wish I could come but Norway is quite a ways away from me.
It's worth going here just for the cheap gas. Bring some cans when you go to TG!
I definitely need to go this time. If I make it, I'll jump on the Facepunch line.
List of participants is up.

Will be updated as more people tell me they are going / how / what etc.
I would love to go to this. If only I was in Norway...
Never been there before, but I'm tempted to go. I might even be able to bring someone along.
It's still half a year away though. Not going to decide yet.
List me up.
I've been there before.
Status is going, sitting with other friends.
Also the fucking tents were horrible.
[editline]1st September 2011[/editline]
Considering silent zone since I'm a huge pussy.
