ROSWELL, N.M. — A well-known computer scientist parachuted from a balloon near the top of the stratosphere on Friday, falling faster than the speed of sound and breaking the world altitude record set just two years ago. The jump was made by Alan Eustace, 57, a senior vice president of Google. At dawn he was lifted from an abandoned runway at the airport here by a balloon filled with 35,000 cubic feet of helium. For a little over two hours, the balloon ascended at speeds up to 1,600 feet per minute to an altitude of more than 25 miles. Mr. Eustace dangled underneath in a specially designed spacesuit with an elaborate life-support system. He returned to earth just 15 minutes after starting his fall. “It was amazing,” he said. “It was beautiful. You could see the darkness of space and you could see the layers of atmosphere, which I had never seen before.” Mr. Eustace cut himself loose from the balloon with the aid of a small explosive device and plummeted toward the earth at speeds that peaked at 822 miles per hour, setting off a small sonic boom heard by people on the ground.
http://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/25/science/alan-eustace-jumps-from-stratosphere-breaking-felix-baumgartners-world-record.html Holy shit
if I was as rich as balls this is what I'd do too
I wanted to hear that sonic boom... [editline]hajkds[/editline] What would that even feel like?
Good. I'm tired of Red Bull's marketing being all over the record books.
Good. I'm tired of Red Bull's marketing being all over the record books.
I'd rather it be Red Bull than Google.
I'd rather it be Red Bull than Google.
It's not Google though. He specifically states he didn't want it to be a Google marketing project. He just happens to be part of Google.
So how come there was zero fanfare here compared to the first jump?
So how come there was zero fanfare here compared to the first jump?
First jump was a Redbull PR event.
"so what did you do all day honey" "oh nothing just hung out most of the day, also broke a world record in 15 minutes"
Other jump was two years ago? It doesn't seem that long.
So how come there was zero fanfare here compared to the first jump?
first one was very hyped as a PR event, this was just him doing it because he could, also he probably kept it low key because they probably weren't sure if he'd breach the record altitude
sick landing
his way of doing it was probably much easier logistically too, red bull had to loft an entire craft with pressure compartment, suit, oxygen, and all the cameras and equipment, while he just kinda hung by his back for a few hours
I wanted to hear that sonic boom... [editline]hajkds[/editline] What would that even feel like?
You wouldn't feel it or hear anything.
I'm more surprised a fifty seven year old, who's only background was computer science, was healthy and able enough to do it.
I'm more surprised a fifty seven year old, who's only background was computer science, was healthy and able enough to do it.
The jump was overdramatized as fuck not really a surprise
He didn't take a selfie with a Nexus 6 I don't think. Missed opportunity?
He didn't take a selfie with a Nexus 6 I don't think. Missed opportunity?
it's still not a marketing ploy :v: [editline]24th October 2014[/editline] though honestly the ultimate selfie would be in the stratosphere
You wouldn't feel it or hear anything.
Basically what you would have heard/felt in the old Concordes for that matter. An easy way to explain it is that sound gets "stacked up" because the supersonic object is creating it faster than it can move. It turns into a wave of compressed sound. (That's not technically accurate but it's the simplest explanation). Locally, you'd hear nothing, and you'd feel nothing.
Oh, okay.
God that was a graceful landing
Dat faceplant.

Now introducing Google Maps Space. Street View the Final Frontier.
the article mentions that he fell at the speed of sound. is it just me or does that seem off? Is the terminal velocity of a human the speed of sound? Edit: please explain why this is dumb? Asking a question about how terminal velocity works when there is no air resistance isn't a dumb question to ask now is it?
the article mentions that he fell at the speed of sound. is it just me or does that seem off? Is the terminal velocity of a human the speed of sound?
He's so high up there's basically no atmosphere to slow him down. When there's less pressure there's also less air resistance, so terminal velocity is higher.
the article mentions that he fell at the speed of sound. is it just me or does that seem off? Is the terminal velocity of a human the speed of sound?
The article mentions he used an explosive device to release him from the balloon, so maybe that pushed him.
