The US has sent several hundred Marines to Syria to support an allied local force aiming to capture the Islamic State stronghold of Raqqa.
Defence officials told the Washington Post they would establish an outpost from which they could fire artillery at IS positions some 32km (20 miles) away.
US special forces are already on the ground, advising the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) alliance.
God damn that title sucks
The Marines' deployment is considered temporary, so it is not affected by the cap.
Before we all freak the fuck out.
They're setting up an artillery unit to help support the anti-ISIS forces, and its completely temporary. No different than whats whats happening in Iraq.
Yeah, title (of the article) is click bait. US Army have already been over in Iraq for a while - as Cyke says, it's no different than what the Marines are going to be doing.

Ya' know, I have never got to ask this before: Why is it our artillerymen have no issue whatsoever staying by the gun while firing, and in every video I see of FSA, Turkmens, Kurds, Daesh, ect.... They always run from their guns. Even if they are actually using proper artillery pieces.

0 training and theirs are probably likely to explode?
You're comparing a professional, volunteer military to a bunch of joe shmoes with guns.
My brothers deployment got moved up. Unsure where he's getting deployed but it's unlikely to be middle east.
Apologies, i decided to use what was nearest to the BBC's title inc ase.
Okay, but why didn't you just use the article title? 'IS conflict: US sends Marines to support Raqqa assault' is a descriptive title that explains everything and isn't vague and ominus.

Nah, you were just trying to stir shit up with a sensationalist title.
Hell yeah slowly inching in, we're already halfway there send us in trump.

why aint they wear earmuffs
why aint they wear earmuffs
Probably so they can hear their commanders giving orders when it's not firing. And listen out for incoming fire.
why aint they wear earmuffs
They could be using in-ear plugs
Probably so they can hear their commanders giving orders when it's not firing. And listen out for incoming fire.
then why not use electronic earmuffs with radio links
They could be using in-ear plugs
most def not good enough for fucking artillery. i don't even like shooting firearms wearing only in ear plugs
the military probably just doesn't give a single shit about hearing loss. they could even build giant suppressors for these things but they haven't for obvious reasons (cost)

A buddy of mine came from an active duty artillery unit, he's deaf in one ear thanks to one of those 155 howitzers.

Navy requires double ear pro around our 127mm main gun, we even get the nice 'triple flange' ear plugs. Even then that thing is still loud as shit even below decks.

Probably because they barely know how it works, and also had to dig the rounds they're using out of the ground where it's been sitting for 20 years

Even with the proper artillery guns, a lot of those shells were stolen from the Syrian Army. The Syrian Army started leaving booby trap shells behind in caches that would destroy guns/crews when they abandoned positions to try and destroy guns that had already been captured.
They did similar things with RPGs to make them detonate as soon as they were fired, and then sold them to rebels/ISIS.

High pressure AK ammo to try and explode receivers too.
The military doesn't care about their personnel if it's standard procedure to not wear hearing protection.. do they not know that the disability claims from resulting hearing loss add up in dollar signs? Even minimal hearing damage can cause Tinnitus which could equal a disability claim.

hearing conservation is a very serious program in the military, if these folks aren't wearing their hearing protection that's on them and not the military.

Don't be ridiculous, they all have hearing protection. For reasons mentioned above however, it serves multiple purposes to not wear ALL of the hearing protection at all times. They're in an active conflict, getting jumped and fucked up because none of you could hear the rifles opening up on you is bad. Not hearing orders is bad. These guns are big and loud, but generally if you're smart and do it well, a combination of soft plugs and just sticking your fingers in your ears is enough to not get hearing damage. Even then, it's personal responsibility to protect yourself from the working environment. The military can't hold your hand if you're stupid.
