Hey guys, so I started up something in the Valve threads that initially started as a fun project to send something nice to Valve employees, and exploded into a brand new small business for me! Introducing (for those who don't know), etched acrylic lighting! It's a great new thing I've started doing that is pretty fun and great to do! For those who don't know what that looks like, an example! I'm going to be making these, and if you want one please PM me with the size and design you want! I'll keep you updated with pictures of not only progress on current etching projects but videos of how the process works as well! Here are some benchmark tests. For any of you that would like to join me when I do all of this, and you live in either Mesa or Tempe, please let me know! It is a public hackerspace that is great to use and open to the public from 7pm to 10pm Monday through Friday! It's called Heatsync Labs! Link: heatsynclabs.org UPDATE: Hey guys, I'll be starting a Kickstarter for this very soon! I'll update this with the link once it's finished! UPDATE [1/29/2012] First few prototype pictures are finished!! They came out great, minus a single flaw. Right now I'm developing a few generics and the bases before I move on to custom work. I just came up with an effective way of layering designs (as seen by the wold and trees) that has a really awesome look! Lemme know what you think. That's pretty sweet man. I wish I had some special shit I could do.
What are you using as a engraver ? Maybe you should give Facepunch a new office sign.
nice one
What are you using as a engraver ? Maybe you should give Facepunch a new office sign.
I'm not sure the model name (something obscure and Chinese) but yeah, I can do tons of stuff.
What are your prices? Do you just get the glass (Like how do you light it up?)
What are your prices? Do you just get the glass (Like how do you light it up?)
Prices depend on sizes and where I'm shipping. It's actually acrylic which is a really thick plastic, and I light it up with a slotted LED fixture I invented myself.
What would be a price estimate for a 500x300mm (19,8x11,8") one, shipped to Norway? [editline]19th January 2012[/editline] Just make that 20x12" :v:
Ehhhh 2'x4' that's running you around $100 without shipping. Oh wait lol you want 1' by 20"... so around 100 with shipping probably. I'll pm details if you're serious :v:
you're in az right? how much for you to just throw my sign onto my doorstep instead of shipping it
so you live in arizona? do you do metal too?
How do you make it glow and such?
So what did you eventually send to Valve?
How do you make it glow and such?
Magical spelling bees
good job
Those lasers are awesome. My father has similar machine, it can almost cut glass. Its awesome, I had this idea once too but I had some trouble lighting it up. I might try it again when I have time.
If you decide to ship one over to Valve, I'm betting we'll get a glimpse of it the next time someone does a "Valve studios walkthrough". I sure know I'll keep my eyes open.
i'd love a new sign for shepard- could you PM me some details
Magical spelling bees
Ehm. Okay, What method do you use to make the etched design effectively glow?
Ehm. Okay, What method do you use to make the etched design effectively glow?
When the light runs into the design that's been etched into the acrylic, it disperses, causing a really cool glowing effect. it's the same for the edges of the acrylic.
Very cool!
Make 50 half life 3 logos in various shapes and sizes and send them to Gabe.
Make 50 half life 3 logos in various shapes and sizes and send them to Gabe.
That was my past thread for this, I plan on doing something similar to that in the future (2 or 3 months).
This would look awesome with 2 of them to use as a modded PC case
How did you get acces to a laser engraver?
I have access to a production CNC router for mainly wood, I wonder if it would work for this.
This would look awesome with 2 of them to use as a modded PC case
@uitham: I can do that if you'd like! @taipan: I have access through a major hackerspace within my area @nivek: CNC routers unfortunately have a harder time with engraving smaller thicknesses. They usually are used to bore holes and engrave much thicker acrylic such as 1/2" and 3/4" thicknesses.
That element sign is awesome, though I feel like it missed out on an opportunity to be even more awesome. A sequence of four colors of LED's positioned below the associated element. Red for fire, blue for water, white for wind, and green for earth. Then have it cycle through them smoothly. Each one transitioning into the second one by dimming the first and slowly raising the the second. Then it would just cycle through. Not that I am bagging on it or anything. Client wants what the client wants.
How about a 1ftx1ft that would mount on the side of my antec 300 case. And if you really are in az I can pay/meet up with you personally. [sp]for sexual favors and such[/sp]
This looks sick, I might try and get one.
That's pretty slick.
