So I went into the local Goodwill (thrift store) today and they had a copy of World of Warcraft: WOTLK, City of Villians, and Battlefield 3: Limited Edition. As soon as I saw BF3 for $20 I couldn't resist, so I bought it. Well sure enough when I got home the CD key had already been used. Isn't it illegal for them to sell it then? Since it wont work. I mean I knew WoW and City of Villians wouldn't work but I forgot about that Origin shit. Selling the WoW disks with a used subscription is like paying to download the WoW client from Blizzard... ITS FREE. Anyway, they have a no return policy, but again, isn't selling these illegal?

update: yes it is illegal, EA gave me a new code.

If it was at a thrift/bargain shop you should have assumed it was already used
They don't check if things work, it's an as-is sale
They might not have known, you could go in and politely inform them that it's not a good idea to sell PC games.
They hire the mentally challenged and people with felonies as employees so I don't see them being reasoned with lol. And yes I do realize it's not a good idea to buy a PC game at a thrift store, but that's not the point. The point is, are they breaking the law by selling me a video game with a used activation code making the game useless.

I really doubt they had any idea about the activation codes, they probably just put a price on it and called it a day.
What are you going to do, sue goodwill lol? You should have known, why would anyone give a new copy of bf3 to goodwill?
IMO give them a warning about selling PC games, and be more cautious next time :v:
I bought quake 1 with the fancy case and quake 2 for about 5-8 bucks. Money well spent
My local Goodwill sells PC games very often. In fact, I usually check there every week and there's good shit. I got Battlefield 1942 + expansions, a couple Rainbow Six games, and a few Sims games from it.
why don't you show origin you bought the game legitly and you own it, therefore they'll do what steam does, disable the account with the "used" key and let you activate it

Buying used is not legitimate enough when it comes to cd keys. Not really EA's problem.

Either this, or contact EA for a new code. I hear they give them out like candy.
Is it bad that whenever I go into goodwill and other thrift stores I always buy all the copies of sim city 4 they have? I feel like I am hoarding it.
It's not illegal- you can purchase codes separately from EA, so selling the disk/game as a product is not illegal.
Every fucking garage sale, yard sale, estate sale, goodwill shop, they all sell fucking Sims games
EA support gave me a new code and said I was right!

Fuck you Facepunch. I was right, you were wrong. :) buh bye
I don't think it's illegal, since they can't really check if the serial was used or not. It's probably frowned upon, but the Goodwill people don't know that.

They can check if it's been used, by calling EA. They asked me for the code and said yes, it has been used. It's illegal because they are selling something that cannot be used for it's intended purpose. I wasn't sure either but they confirmed it.
if your dumb enough to buy a second hand pc game that obviously requires a code for origin to play from a fucking goodwill store, then i dont think your old enough to play it anyway

You're not really acting like you're 20.
Being blunt doesn't mean saying "Fuck you" to everyone you talk to.
Being blunt doesn't mean saying "Fuck you" to everyone you talk to.
I don't say fuck you to everyone, just the ones that disagree'd and were wrong, which was pretty much everyone, including yourself.
stop acting like a dick. :)
Im not being a dick man... Im just blunt... I havent done a single ill advised thing. I asked for help, everyone said I was an idiot, but EA disagree'd. Of course Im gonna say fuck you... lol

ITT: Person explains the concept of boredom.
They sold me The Sims 3 for $5, got boring after awhile to be honest.
Yeah I got the Sims 3 out of the bargain bin at a game shop here. The Sims games do start to get old, i mean there's only so much to do. Generally speaking when Im bored I just end up finding creative ways to kill the townsfolk lol.
What made you think this was a good idea?
What made you think this was a good idea?
The part where I got Battlefield 3: Limited Edition for $20?
Being blunt =/= saying fuck you to people who had a disagreement.
