http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-31421676
David Cameron has announced the roll-out of free wi-fi on trains throughout the UK from 2017 in a £50m plan. He was asked about improving communications for business people, commuters and students by former Tory cabinet minister Maria Miller, who claimed "our trains are stuck in the analogue age".
Finally. Currently you usually have to pay for the WiFi unless you're in first class.
Now let's see how well it works.
Now let's see how well it works.
Well the current WiFi that you have to pay for is fucking shit from my experience [editline]11th February 2015[/editline] I'm talking <2 Mbps with constant dropouts, and all video sites like Netflix and YouTube are blocked

I can usually get about an hour of free wifi on east midlands trains, it's useful for checking train timetables etc. but little else
The Scotrail trains have free WiFi right now.
And over in North America, we don't even have WiFi or signal in subways nor trains...
We've had free wifi on commuter rail trains in Massachusetts for years. Step it up, England. It's as shitty as you would expect, though. You lose service if you go into a tunnel and most sites take about five seconds or more to load. Streaming videos is impossible even if you turn the quality down to the bare minimum. It's only useful for basic web browsing and IMing people on Skype or Steam.
The Scotrail trains have had semi-decent free Wifi for a while now. When it works at least, its good enough for browsing the internet, or watching videos (maybe not at the highest quality, but its not the end of the world!).
We have Wifi only in coaches
I'll believe it when I see it, maybe they can make them run on time first
I've always found it strange that I can get free wi-fi on a bus, but not a train.
I'm still surprised that we're in 2015 and we don't have more public WiFi. Like seriously guys, this "internet" thing did just revolutionize the world y'kno, maybe make it more accessable? Here you'll be lucky to find a pizzaria with free WiFi. It's literally as much marketing gold as those places that allow smoking indoor. Literally just free money right here.
And over in North America, we don't even have WiFi or signal in subways nor trains...
and in middle america we barely even have passenger trains :downs:
Every bus and train in Israel has free wifi, which we apparently had for the past 3 years get with the times uk edit: 6 years*
The wifi ScotRail already has is pretty good - sometimes the signal gets a bit bad but it never lasts long.
instead of Wifi why not just roll out 4G instead...
instead of Wifi why not just roll out 4G instead...
The wi-fi is free. And many people spend quite a lot of time commuting, whereas at their destination they've got other wi-fi hotspots to mooch off.
Cool, gonna be able to get Wi-Fi from the future!
I take a roughly 16 hour journey to Aberdeen from Plymouth very often, it's a godsend having wifi on the coach. I'd probably pay the little bit extra to take the train if I had wifi the whole time.

If the news is to be believed, and it probably shouldn't be, you have 2 or 3 large companies controlling your Internet access that like treating their customers badly. How would you ever get it free, especially on public transport?

Oh, you're only ~5 years behind Finland on that. Congratulations.

Lol, even Russia already have free wi-fi in subway, buses and countryside trains coming in next few years.
The Scotrail trains have free WiFi right now.
It's strange as well, my line (Being the Gourock to Glasgow line has it), and it's pretty good! I didn't even expect a shit line like ours would even have it.
England is not UK.
That's funny, I could have sworn the UK was Wales, Scotland, England, and Ireland.
That's interesting, Ireland is always seen as slow and behind UK in infrastructure, but Ireland has had Wifi for a few years now (afaik) Hell, even the fucking Dublin Buses (Typical buses) do have Wifi. They block video streaming though, otherwise bunch of fucks would connect to it and watch cat videos causing slow internet.
