...and ended up with something that sounds like an 8-bit remix of the 300 Soundtrack :v: Still, I started with a generic DnB beat, tried to create a bunch of Reese synths on Reason, then got bored and altered them all to sound really weird. I'm not sure whether I like it or not, but I keep listening to it... http://owain.slashingedge.co.uk/DooMCat-Reeses.mp3 Take a listen, tell me what you like/hate about it - and do tell me whether I've stuck in the genre or not... Oh and I've been pretty liberal with the [sub]bass frequencies, so if it sounds like shit on iPod earphones, my bad. EDIT: Lame, the forum doesn't have the built-in mp3 player anymore?
I rather enjoyed it What did you use to make it?
Tempo automation at the start of a tune is generally a bad thing, especially with something as dancefloor oriented as DnB. It limits the flexibility of the track from a DJ's perspective. The synth lines are kind of boring to be honest, they get repetitive really quick, especially the constant high-mid buzzy ones. Drums could use a lot of work, the kick is pretty wimpy, snare isn't too bad, but it could use a bit more crack to it instead of being pretty much just a noise burst. The cymbals and other drums are where the real problem is though. You don't really have any main hat grooving with the beat at all (at least nothing that is prominent enough), and the sample you used for the shuffle just doesn't feel right at all, it's got way too much of that whole rapid-fire sample machine-gun feel to it. Just 4 of the same hit right after each other and that doesn't work at all. It could really use a lot more rolly hats/rides in the top end too. I could nitpick about a lot more but those are the things really holding the tune back for me right now.

I'm going to do another one with more interesting synth lines, I think. I didn't have a keyboard to play out some riffs on, at the time. I do now :D
Drums could use a lot of work, the kick is pretty wimpy, snare isn't too bad, but it could use a bit more crack to it instead of being pretty much just a noise burst. Do you know where I can get decent drum samples from? The pack I got from a tutorial has some pretty weak samples. Kicks are okay but the snares aren't, and there's barely any cymbal samples and stuff. I listen to a fuckload of D&B... never tried to make any before, though. I shall take your comments onboard and attempt a new song, because I love doing it :D
I rather enjoyed it What did you use to make it?
Reason 4.0 - a fuckload of Malström synths and "boyinaband.com's dnb sample drum pack". EDIT: Second track is definitely taking inspiration from Sidius/Steam recordings' dark sound, epic drum track plus orchestral hits are a killer combination.
I mainly use and process old breaks for my drums, sometimes I use a kick and some hats from the vengeance packs and shit too if I fell like it, always with decent amounts of processing on those too. You just kind of build a collection as you go haha. My sample folder is 200+gb now, and I don't even know where I got half of it.
Where is the bassline?
