[release]* Man demanded flight return to Oslo
* Put on ski mask, claimed he had bomb
* Passengers tackle and restrain him
A PASSENGER on a Turkish Airlines flight from Oslo to Istanbul tried to hijack the plane before being overpowered by other passengers.
According to security sources quoted by CNN-Turk television channel, the would-be hijacker headed for the cockpit of Flight 1754 less than an hour before arrival at Istanbul claiming he had a bomb.
Anatolia news agency reported that he began shouting threats on the flight after putting on a ski mask, and demanded that the the Boeing 737-800 return to Oslo.
However, he was tackled by Turkish and Norwegian passengers and was arrested after the plane landed safely at Ataturk airport.
The 40-year-old suspect, named as Cuma Yasar, comes from a Kurdish village in the southeastern Turkish region of Anatolia.
No explosive device was found on him, CNN-Turk said.
There were no injuries.
Anatolia news agency said the man was carrying a card identifying him as a disabled person.[/release]
I... have no comment on this
now was that so hard, americans?

A single guy attempts to command an entire plane, maybe 100+ people, he's very smart. Most successful hijackings involve at least 5 people, don't they?
Honestly, I think putting armed TSA Agents on the actual airplanes would be more effective than tons of security at the entrance.
Yeah, but I think it's still safer too keep anything dangerous such as a gun on the ground.
TSA Agents with tazers.
They can't even do body scans correctly, what makes you think that giving them a gun on an airplane would be a better idea?
And what happened to the Federal Air Marshals?
Yeah, but I think it's still safer too keep anything dangerous such as a gun on the ground.
I agree, but the current methods aren't really working quite as well as they could be.
And what happened to the Federal Air Marshals?
they ended up being worth jack shit

I don't get it. It sounds like it wasn't planned, because as you said, the chances are not really promising. But if it wasn't, why did he have the ski mask ready?
If it was actually planned, whats the point? Despite the chances being very slim of it succeeding, whats the gain? You return the plane to Oslo, and then? Chances are you will get arrested there. If it was planned to do something with the plane in Oslo, why wait until almost an hour before the destination to command it back? Why go back to Oslo otherwise, you just came from there.
It makes no sense.

Maybe he wanted to inconvenience the passengers?

Doesn't sound like a normal person

Ski mask in carry on because it was cold outside?
Maybe they wouldn't have enough fuel to fly back and he wanted to crash

I believe they place a single Marshall on every 4th plane that leaves an airport.
now was that so hard, americans?

Yeah if only they could have had someone with as much Call of Duty training as you on board, tragedy could have been averted.
I believe they place a single Marshall on every 4th plane that leaves an airport.
Not entirely unbelievable. They spend millions of dollars a year on operating their agency.
I believe they place a single Marshall on every 4th plane that leaves an airport.
Cause, that's useful
I like how in recent attempts to hijackings, all the passengers team up and take the guy down. Pretty nobel passengers if you ask me.

Majority of TSA are a bunch of dumbasses... Washington DC Police in the last 10 years had about 150 Accidental Discharges, and those are just the ones that weren't covered up. How many aircraft are going to crash because of accidental discharges from TSA dipshits. Depressurization at FL360 is catastrophic

Isn't there some issue with missing and hitting a wall or something? I'm sure it screws everything up at high altitude, better off with tazers or something.

Actually it would take a lot more than one or two pistol caliber bullets through the plane's fuselage to do any real damage. It's not like the air inside the plane suddenly goes "A HOLE! ATTAAACK!".
Most of the damage will be done to the offending officer's wallet when he gets the repair bill.
nice why couldnt we do that?

A plane can lose an entire section of a wall and still land safely, a gunshot isn't going to cause explosive decompression like in the movies. Sorry try again.

There's the Air Marshals for that.

Errr, why not? I mean there's a pressure difference between the inside of the plane and the sky surrounding it, is there not?
[editline]6th January 2011[/editline]
Wayword ninja'd me, please explain why it doesn't decompress like that.

Found this link, apparently a bullet isn't much of a problem, except when it hits a window. Or wiring. http://science.howstuffworks.com/science-vs-myth/everyday-myths/gun-on-plane.htm

boxes for not watching mythbusters
boxes for not watching mythbusters
Yeah, because I have nothing better to do than watching TV.
well, do you?
why are you dumbing eachother, it's dumb
Mattk50 is referring to when mythbusters tested whether or not a bullet whole would cause explosive decompression. It didn't, instead it was only a minor problem and they determined it would be able to land safely.
edit: I guess I was kind of begging for the boxes on that one

not really
mythbusters did an episode on this
a single bullet won't depressurize an entire plane

I beleive air marshalls use subsonic ammunition so it would penetrate the fuselage.
