Microsoft just received confirmation of a patent that hands the company the intellectual property of shutting an operating system down.
I can’t quite recall how often Microsoft ha stalked about a faster way to shut down its operating system. It is part of the pitch of virtually every new operating system and it has remained an annoyance that it can take quite some time until the software in fact closes running applications and the operating system itself.
In August 2005, Microsoft filed for a patent to more efficiently shut down its Windows operating system as well as other operating systems, including Apple’s Mac OS X, and override running programs that may prevent Windows from closing. That particular feature has been implemented for some time in Windows and is known as the notification screen just before the actual shutdown, if a user has requested Windows to close and other programs with open and unsaved documents are still running.
Microsoft describes this feature as “a user interface and scheme […] for facilitating shutting down an operating system. Aspects include the operating system receiving a command to initiate shut down, and automatically terminating graphical user interface (GUI) applications that delay shut down which do not have top level windows.”
The patent was filed when Vista was three months away from its first release to business users. Microsoft refers only to Windows XP in the patent description and states that “when shut down is temporarily blocked by other applications, the user experience can be unpleasant as the user may not be provided with any system generated indication of what is going on and shut down is obviously delayed.”
Sometimes, the really simple things can be really complicated. Even the request to just shut Windows down. Perhaps we will see a patent in some time that would shut Windows down in less than 5 seconds when you ask it to?
Is it me, or is this shit getting out of hand? Really... getting out of hand.
fuck you guys, i added an extra vowel. go to hell
damn. Title reads patents in the editor... thread reads patients. rate check marks for the hell of it.
Pffft... shutdown -F is all I need... :smug:
Fuck you, Haschefrosh

Fucking Software patents, how do we kill them?
Fuck that, I use Sleep.
I wonder if there's a patent on patents. :raise:
Fuck that, I use Sleep.
How do you update?
I hold the power button down till it turns off.
I regenerate all the bad sectors on my HDDs every 3 months.
I wonder if there's a patient on patients. :raise:
Only in the sexiest hospitals.
I never turn off my computer anyway
2010, the year of the retarded copyrights
"Patent"
I know, I corrected it... its not updating. :|
This isn't patenting the OS shutdown. Its patenting the method used in W7 where if any applications are open that need to be saved first they stop it THAN it shuts down.
God damn patents cause so many problems.
So when I shut my computer off, I have to pay a nickle?

To clarify this is just a method to help shut the OS down quicker. It's not retarded at all. It always bothers me how long windows needs to shut down, all it should need to do is quit everything, spin down the hard disks, then turn everything off.
i thought flow charts were supposed to be simple :saddowns:
I'm surprised they got a patent on something so simple.
I guess Macs can't shut down anymore.
[editline]12:34PM[/editline]
Actually they can, but now Apple need to license the ability to turn off the computer from Microsoft.
Oh I thought it was some kind of anti-piracy thing.

They patented the shutdown method, not shutting down.
lol this is fucking retarded.
Brb, patenting a bunch of random flowcode.
They patented the shutdown method, not shutting down.
Which is the same method Apple use for OS X.
So does Linux.
The method is so generic.

First FB, now Microsoft? What the fuck is going on?
US patent system for you.
I'm going to patent patenting.
I just hold down the power button, or flip the switch on the power supply when I'm done using my computer...goodni
flip the switch on the power supply
That's a pretty retarded way to shutdown.
Oh US, you so silly with your patents :allears:
