Jewish outrage as ship named after SS war criminal arrives in Europe As Holocaust day nears, anger erupts at arrival in Rotterdam of the Pieter Schelte, the world’s largest vessel [t]http://i.guim.co.uk/static/w-620/h--/q-95/sys-images/Guardian/About/General/2015/1/24/1422115689911/Pieter-Schelte-arrives-at-007.jpg[/t] Leaders of Jewish communities and Holocaust memorial groups in Britain and the Netherlands have reacted with rage and despair at the arrival in Rotterdam of the world’s biggest ship, the Pieter Schelte, named after a Dutch officer in the Waffen-SS. The vice-president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, Jonathan Arkush, said: “Naming such a ship after an SS officer who was convicted of war crimes is an insult to the millions who suffered and died at the hands of the Nazis. We urge the ship’s owners to reconsider and rename the ship after someone more appropriate.” Esther Voet, director of the Centre for Information and Documentation on Israel (Cidi), based in The Hague, said that the timing of the ship’s arrival, shortly before Jews were targeted and killed in Paris and the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, was “a coincidence, I’m sure, but a sign of the times. We lost our battle to have the ship’s name changed, and we are left eating dust.” Survivors of the Holocaust in Britain also spoke out. Ruth Barnett, a tireless campaigner who arrived from Nazi Germany as part of the Kindertransport, said: “I am outraged by the intensity and extent of denial and indifference that fails to challenge things like this ship, and allows the impunity for perpetrators to think they can get away with it.” ... Allseas is owned by a Dutchman, Edward Heerema, who is the son of Pieter Schelte Heerema. So basically he named it after his dad, who just happened to be a member of the SS. They're exaggerating the guy's contributions to the SS, by the way. He was sentenced to 3 years in jail and
After the war he was arrested and sentenced to jail for three years, though the court released him after one and a half years on account of his "very important services to the resistance between August 1943 and March 1944."
http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/world/2008-11-07-3812420165_x.htm Dude switched sides to the Resistance in 1943.
Seriously, the war ended 70 years ago. Time to move the fuck on.
But no, we're left with this fact: the largest ship in the world is named after an officer in the SS, and not enough people are offended to get this changed.
I just woke the house laughing
So they are mad and yelling MUH HOLOCAUST because of a ship name? Like really?
So they are mad and yelling MUH HOLOCAUST because of a ship name? Like really?
They are getting offended by practically anything that even has a loose connection to the Holocaust, Nazis, SS, and similar. A son names his ship after his Dad who happened to be in the SS? Absolutely outrageous and disgusting. I wonder when the jewish people spewing such nonsense stop using it as an excuse to cry over everything.
the ship itself is way more interesting than it's name tho. It's basically 2 tankers welded together, and it's planned to be able to lift up off-shore facilities. [editline]6th February 2015[/editline] some concept art of it [t]http://www.nieuwsbladtransport.nl/Portals/0/wosimages/NIEUW/WATER/Pieter-Schelte.jpg[/t] it's going to Rotterdam to finish assembly.
I could see if the person they named the ship after was real SS material like Heinrich Himmler, or someone that tried to escape war crimes for 70+ years, but an SS officer turned resistance informer? That's just a bad criticizing choice.

It's the only ship in the world that can dismantle the Brent oilfield in the north sea as Shell have planned, if it doesn't enter the UK then there will be four concrete pillars the size of Big Ben just left there
The SS War Criminal would be a p radical name for a ship actually
I wonder if Israel will try to sink it.
Seriously, the war ended 70 years ago. Time to move the fuck on.
If I were in my 80s, alone, having had my entire family murdered by the Nazis, and spending decades as the sole surviving member of my family, and someone told me that it's been seventy years and I need to move on, I'd tell them to fuck off. Until everyone who actually suffered through the Holocaust is dead, yeah, I think some sensitivity is warranted, even seventy years on. Outrage over a ship named after an SS officer who not only wasn't some heinous war criminal, but actively aided the Resistance, is absurd and unwarranted and completely excessive, but you're in no position to tell people directly and permanently affected by the Holocaust to 'lol just get over it already'.
That's a sweet ship. It feels like every month we get a new biggest. One day they're just going to be moving islands.
I would simply add "fuck off" to the name for the extra aneurysms
I would simply add "fuck off" to the name for the extra aneurysms
Have it deliver 400,000 tonnes of aid to gaza.
The Jewish community is always up in fucking arms
If I were in my 80s, alone, having had my entire family murdered by the Nazis, and spending decades as the sole surviving member of my family, and someone told me that it's been seventy years and I need to move on, I'd tell them to fuck off.
But you need to move on. Throwing a tantrum for every single thing that might relate to the Holocaust, or chasing old and dying SS rank and file troopers to "bring them to justice" is not gonna bring your loved ones back, or is gonna keep people from repeating said mistakes.
Suck it up Jewish community, being offended doesn't mean shit.
Oy vey! It's like the Shoah all over again!
But you need to move on. But while it's easy for young people with no personal connection to the Holocaust to say it's come and gone and we need to get over it, there are a lot of people who lived through it, who suffered it firsthand, who never will get over it. It will haunt them until the day they die. I'm not saying we all need to tread carefully to avoid anything that could cause offense, but just have a little empathy for people who survived the Holocaust, or any other horrific act for that matter. There's a big difference between telling someone you think they're being unreasonably offended, and telling someone they're an idiot and need to get over that whole genocide thing already.
I just woke the house laughing
Seems like they didn't reach their six millions
I actually lost a great deal of my family during the holocaust and even I couldn't give less of a shit. It was 70 years ago. Let things go. Its the only way to grow as a person is to let things go.
The Jews will never move on.
The Jews will never move on.
This one has.
Have it deliver 400,000 tonnes of aid to gaza.
Well shit our killcount is now bigger than WW1 and 2 combined :v:
Renaming a ship is bad luck though
Unless he was the Dutch version of Oskar Dirlewanger, "a psychopathic killer and child molester", and I seriously doubt it considering he apparently aided resistance fighters, this is fucking stupid.
Renaming a ship is bad luck though
Naw they do it all the time.
If I were in my 80s, alone, having had my entire family murdered by the Nazis, and spending decades as the sole surviving member of my family, and someone told me that it's been seventy years and I need to move on, I'd tell them to fuck off. Throughout the history of mankind, both far and recent, multitudes of people have suffered, and sadly to this day, millions upon millions continue to suffer. Millions of jews died, yes, and it's truly tragic, but the Holocaust is not a distinctly unique case of tragedy, and considering it's been almost three quarters of a century, during which much more than 6 million have died in vain due to the machinations of evil people, I truly think it's time the hatchet is buried. The jews are not special, nor should they use history as a personal guilt-crutch to blame everyone who disagrees with them in this matter. Do the jews even acknowledge the sacrifices of the Eastern European nations through-out WWII, for example? Do they even have any idea how much we paid in blood only to be used as pawns in the wars of bigger powers, only to be annexed in the end anyway? And you won't see us trying to guilt-trip the rest of the world either - it's just senseless and no fun for anyone, so why bring it up? I've said it before, and I'll say it again - history is the tool by which Man can learn of His mistakes so that He would not be doomed to repeat them. What history is not, however, is an agenda-bending scapegoat generator. With all due respect, jewish communities, it's time - get over it.
