THE TOPLINE: The fallout from President Trump's travel bans roiled Washington on Monday.
At the Pentagon, Defense Secretary James Mattis is compiling a list of Iraqis who helped U.S. troops during the war, whom he wants to exempt from the ban.
less than 2 weeks in and the defense secretary is already working against the president's orders

How long until he gets fired too?
Looks like he is the next to be fired :ohno:
If he's not axed I'll be surprised.
firing mattis would be such an incredibly massive blow to trump's popularity that it might sink the GOP for years to come

Let them do it, then.

From what I gather, the military is now blocked from trump's advisory table unless he explicitly invites them. They're already pissed and if Mattis is fired or resigns, the military will be furious since they consider him to be a model of the perfect soldier. If trump wants to be popular with the military/veterans, he has to keep Mattis happy.

I think these last few days have shown Trump does not give a flying fuck about what people outside of his #MAGA-spamming clique care about.
Nothing wrong with this tbh
The immigration block was poorly implemented considering it excluded people with valid visas
The fact that it exists at all is what's wrong with it.

this might actually lead to a military coup at the very worst then
wow
Trump would be wise
Well, there goes that then.
I wonder if Mattis is going to enjoy spending 4 years cleaning up trump's messes

What if Trump's hyperdimensional checkers game always was to destroy the repubs? Seems like the pendulum's a-swingin' back. Damn that was quick.

Wasn't he a former Democrat? What if all of this is 78D Tic Tac Toe meant to destroy the GOP? Man, Trump really plays the long game huh?
My dad has been trying to get his translator out of Afghanistan for 4 years now. These people definitely deserve to be expedited. If you helped the US war effort, you deserve our admiration and help.

Agree.
I think Mattis will be fine. If anything, the precedent appears to be that Trump will let Mattis convince him on things.
He does that and he looses the "fuck yea" he's got from the military. He loses that and the chances of him losing significant portions of his base go up exponentially. Mattis will stay around because trump needs him to solidify his base, otherwise he's fucked.
how does he have a "fuck yea" from the military?
don't really see how they can support a draft dodger that talks shit about American POWs and parents who lost their children to war
i guess with recruitment so low they let just about anyone in

Is Trump supposed to be the Boss? She didn't do anything wrong

Officially, we don't. Civil control of the military means we're supposed to refrain from political activity as an institution. On the individual level, I don't think very many of us are actually fans of him.
Like it or not though, he is our Commander in Chief. We don't have to like him, but we do have to obey all lawful orders and give him the respect due his position.

Well, she did defect to Russia...
Mattis seems like a genuinely good decision that's ultimately back-fired for Trump. From what I've seen/read, he doesn't take bullshit from anybody. Trump's appointment of Mattis may have been seen by him as "hey, he's a tough guy, I want tough guys in my cabinet", without realizing that the list of people Mattis won't take shit from includes Trump himself.

more appropriate would be putin as volgin and trump as raikov
No, no. Mattis as Naked Snake and Trump as Ocelot, that time NS smacked him around like a bitch.
It would strongly be in Trump's interests to let Mattis have this; plus only the absolutely hardcore anti-immigration people would be against letting in those who risked their lives by aiding the US military. But somehow I have a feeling Trump will still decline.
Probably Trump's only good pick.
I feel bad for anyone working under Trump who has more than half a brain cell to go around and has to work to alleviate as much bullshit as they can
Honestly I hope Mattis isn't offed.
He's the last bastion of sanity in Trump's cabinet, and judging by most of Trump's other picks, a replacement for Mattis would result is a much more volatile (in the nuclear way) administration.
just make Mattis the president instead

well a lot people don't like their boss anyway, so i wouldn't imagine it'd be much different
politically members of the military have been split by where they come from and whether they're commissioned or not, but i don't know how the more right-leaning members see him given his awful track record of consistently saying stupid shit
