• Kingdom Hearts 3 throws Luminous Engine under the bus for Unreal Engine 4
In the full interview about KH 2.5 HD Remix, Famitsu asked Nomura for a status update on the development of KH3. Nomura says that development is proceeding as planned based on the schedule, but that they have switched to Unreal Engine 4 for "various reasons". He goes on to say that because of the engine switch they're having some rendering issues at the moment, but that Epic Games is working closely with them to resolve any issues. i kind of expected this TBH, i feel like working with a new engine was just a bit too out of the comfort zone for them not surprised but still disappointed
Can someone explain what this means? What is the luminous engine, and was there a controversy over it?
Can someone explain what this means? It's the same engine they were pushing for their newer games like XV. It's the same reason why XV has been in development hell because they can't decide what to fucking do with it just like Crystal Tools with FF13. Crystal Tools was said to be pretty bad because they wanted stuff in it that the engine couldn't do.
Yeah never even heard of the luminous engine...I think everyone will be happy with UE4 regardless.
but unreal engine 4 is great so
Yeah never even heard of the luminous engine...I think everyone will be happy with UE4 regardless.
Luminous Engine is the engine Square Enix is developing for Final Fantasy XV. Future games like Kingdom Hearts III were supposed to use it but now it's not looking that way, at least not for KH3.
Kingdom Hearts with UE? Color me intrigued
UE4 basically is the go-to engine right now anyway and far, far more cost-efficient for using than trying to make something from the ground-up in-house and never finalizing a single damn about it.
Kingdom Hearts with UE? Color me intrigued
Why would the engine be what makes you intrigued for a game? You can make a great game in it just as easily as you can make a shitty one, the engine is relatively irrelevant. Sure it means it will probably look nice, but that is pretty much a given at this point from AAA studios.

I don't know if there's ever been multiplayer in a kingdom hearts game for example (because the last one I played was on a PS2) but you can literally make objects sync in multiplayer using a tickbox with UE4. Not to say designing engaging MP gameplay isn't a whole different matter, it's just a lot easier from the technical side using the unreal engine
People using UE4 means easy porting to Linux
Kingdom Hearts with the potential for modding support? Well shit. Someone's going to be busy remaking stuff.
Luminous engine is the same engine they used for this tech demo
i kind of expected this TBH, i feel like working with a new engine was just a bit too out of the comfort zone for them not surprised but still disappointed
Wouldn't UE4 be a new engine as well though?
KH3 is now a grey/brown cover shooter.
Wouldn't UE4 be a new engine as well though?
I imagine Unreal Engine 4 is probably far more documented and easier to use than a company-made private engine that potentially is more frankenstein work than any engine should ever be, judging by how it was basically tech demo bait and little else more than used for Final Fantasy 15, which already has a very tumultuous development history.
Just as long as they keep the style, this could be pretty good
Luminous engine is the same engine they used for this tech demo
Ooooh! That one, the one that they showed off at like the PS4 Event, E3 AND TGS at the same year because they were like: "Well we have nothing new to share, so look at the Trailer of our awesome Engine again"? Dunno what to say except for: HA! HAAAAAA! I don't hate the games, I liked the old more, but how can one not be cynical for those development hell ridden games?
I'm shocked that a game like this [t]http://static.giantbomb.com/uploads/original/16/163117/2570867-603392962_1365921782.jpg[/t] Would use the same engine as this [t]http://www.loadthegame.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Killing-Floor.jpg[/t]
KF is Unreal 2 i think.
Its actually Unreal Engine 2.5
You guys are dead wrong UE4 is amazing you can try some demos here http://www.roadtovr.com/download-13-beautiful-unreal-engine-4-demos-oculus-rift-dk2/ Now the question is will the PC platform ever get to see a kingdom hearts game in this generation?
I don't think anyone(expect one person) was saying that UE4 was bad.
UE4 is amazing and extremely accessible. There's also a ton of documentation and support.
UE4 is a great choice and Epic has done an excellent job making it robust enough to meet a wide verity of use cases. Although dropping your in house engine for the common alternative says as much about your lack of faith in your own work as it does about the new choice, I just hope its used to deliver a better product. If Epic is working with them to solve their issues with UE4, those fixes are going to go back into the engine development for the rest of us that use it.

That being said, and this is highly wishful thinking; maybe this means a PC version someday? Doubtful, but how cool would that be?

And why are you shocked? Did you think certain engines only support certain art styles? That makes no sense.
