Today, we’re delighted to announce that DiRT 4 will fearlessly race to PS4, Xbox One and Windows PC in June 2017. Hot on the heels of 2016’s critically and commercially successful DiRT Rally, DiRT 4 takes the passion and authenticity of off-road racing to the next level, whilst also re-introducing you all to white-knuckle truck and buggy racing in Landrush.
that was fast
Cool, DiRT is always a good bit of fun. I hope they don't settle for just incremental improvements and actually refine the game like they've been doing so far.
I hope it'll be more like Dirt Rally than Dirt 3.

I'd rather it be like the first game

Read in another news that it's going try to merge Dirt Rally's realism with the accessibility of the first three.
As long as they don't put in a garage crew to deeply french kiss your arsehole like in DiRT 3, they won't have to do much to get my purchase.
Can't say I'm too excited since they took money from Facebook and Sony to keep Dirt Rally VR exclusive to the Rift/PSVR
hopefully they drop the gymkhana stuff and keep it about rallying rather than getting sweet air and drifting
As long as it doesnt have rewind shit in it Im happy

You could disable that in the difficulty options though?
You could disable that in the difficulty options though?
Never played dirt 3, never will either considering it's inferior to dirt rally in every way but the mere ability to rewind time in a rally game is just gimmick as hell.

you are not forced to use rewind.
DiRT 4 will resonate with all players regardless of whether they consider themselves an arcade or sim racer. The beauty is that you can choose exactly what type of experience you want to have, and then play the game on your terms. If you want something fun that doesn’t require in-depth knowledge of automotive engineering and vehicle dynamics, then you can just dive into the game and have a great time. If you loved the challenge of DiRT Rally, then you can switch to the Sim Handling mode and have an experience that is even closer to the real deal than we managed to achieve with DiRT Rally.

With regards to VR, it’s something that we will be looking at once we’ve seen people’s reaction to DiRT Rally on PSVR.
Really hope they follow through with a VR option, like they did with Dirt Rally.

It's fairly nice for casual gamers, in a casual game like DiRT 3. Means you don't have to restart the entire race over from the beginning just because you made a small mistake in the second-to-last curve.

I didn't even know that was an option lol
I'm in need of another good casual rally game to play with friends, since I have enough serious sim racers to keep me satisfied for a good long while.
Please please please add VR support.

The fun and challenge from Dirt Rally comes from the constant pressure to not bin the car somewhere during the rally. The daily/weekly/monthly challenges are a great example of that too, as you aren't allowed to restart in those, which makes not only for really tense driving if you are pushing hard, but also for gruelling drives where you are trying to drag a broken car to the finish line if you fuck up. Especially when being over halfway into a 24-stage monthly, and you screw up and blow off the rear end and one of the rear tires in a crash, you'd better hope you'd be able to drag your stricken car to the finish and into the next service area. Fucking up and crashing actually has consequences in Dirt Rally instead of cheesing your way out with flashbacks
Flashbacks would ruin all that, and I sincerely hope that those daily/weekly/monthly challenges in Dirt 4 will be like in Dirt Rally, as in Sim Mode only, and no restarts or flashbacks allowed.
Why are people complaining about rewind?
That's how I got good at the games. It lets you keep trying corners and difficult areas without having to restart a whole race every time. I thought it was a great and very helpful feature.

In my opinion, you learn better by doing it all in one go without rewinds. It's more risky, but it feels so much more rewarding.

Which you can still build up to, like I did. You come to a point of not needing or wanting to use the feature because like you said it's a big reward. After playing a lot of Dirt 2 I really enjoyed being able to ace levels that I've been enabled to practice a lot with 0 waste of time.
Restarting the level to pick up how to do a single really hard turn gets super old and is obstructive to picking up new players when by using an optional system (which the game rewards you for using less) you can immediately start to form a frame of mind such as:
Ok I just I breaked too late. Rewind... Ok now to early. Now I need to get a handle on my steering coming out of the curve. After a couple goes you nail it, getting that muscle memory and hand-eye coordinate much quicker than playing like continuous, real life.
It is a totally optional, valuable tool to pick up the game.

No you don't. You can all but hit a tree head first at 120 km/h and your car will still be 80% good to finish the rest of the race. You can crash and still do well, the game is very forgiving.
I don't see how that's especially off-putting to casuals, you don't always need to be 1st.
About restarting races...
There is one thing more infuriating than having to do that. Sitting through an unskippable cutscene before you can get back at it again.
In a 2000 racing game, Midtown Madness 2, restarting a race was as simple as pressing a button. Press F4 and in an instant you were back at the starting line, countdown and off you were.
Nowadays it just seems to drag on and on. Like in The Crew, where if you restart a Faction mission, you have to watch the beginning cutscene over and over again, since it's unskippable. It gets tedious real fast.
It's good to hear a DIRT sequel coming along, 2 and 3 were great fun.

This is a sin that every god damn modern racing game has been doing for the longest time, it's obnoxious as hell.
Going for all gold in Hot Pursuit 2010 was nearly impossible (on the player's patience) because of exactly this. What's so hard of setting all cars velocity to zero, reset the AI, reset the timer, put them at the starting line, loading the starting zone and setting the race's state to START???

Some off-screen gameplay.

I mean, I grew up on Arcade racers like Burnout 3 that were absolutely unforgiving if you fuck up. Crash once? You might have a chance. Twice? Kiss gold goodbye. In the later Grand Prix's you don't even get one chance if your trying for all gold. I don't think you could restart the individual races unless you forfeit the entire Grand Prix. Its tense and rewarding, but trying on your sanity for 20-30 minutes.
Still, I'm not against rewinds if they are optional. Nothing wrong with making barrier for entry easier. Not everyone is hard core.
I liked Dirt 2, but I could never get into Dirt 3 with that guy kissing my ass constantly in the menus. I don't need, nor do I want, constant validation and praise when I'm playing a game. Especially when the guy is acting like I'm some hot shot before I've even gotten to the options menu.
As long as Dirt 4 doesn't have the suck up (and doesn't focus on Gymkhana so much) I'll enjoy it.
The fun and challenge from Dirt Rally comes from [Long, well-argumented post]
Exactly. Exactly. DiRT 3 is not Dirt Rally. It is a different game, presented differently, that functions differently. And with the way 3 works and feels, the rewind is not out of place, and makes for a much, much less frustrating casual rally racing game. Of course people who are into hardcore rallying wouldn't like it, because that isn't who it was there for, or who the game was made for.
Didn't Dirt 3 give you bonuses for not using the rewinds / have a difficulty level that did not allow rewinds? I just played with that one.
I also hope this doesn't mean they're dropping development on Dirt Rally soon, the game is still new.

They're not only optional, you also get a bonus if you disable them.
In that video there's a "Fearless" difficulty option that completely disables both restarts and rewinds, and gives you a 95% bonus to everything.
There is also a selection between 2 different physics types.
