• Laptop for every pupil in Uruguay
Uruguay has become the first country to provide a laptop for every child attending state primary school. President Tabaré Vázquez presented the final XO model laptops to pupils at a school in Montevideo on 13 October. Over the last two years 362,000 pupils and 18,000 teachers have been involved in the scheme. The "Plan Ceibal" (Education Connect) project has allowed many families access to the world of computers and the internet for the first time. Uruguay is part of the One Laptop Per Child scheme, an organisation set up by internet pioneer Nicholas Negroponte. His original vision was to provide laptops at $100 (£61) but they proved more expensive. The Uruguay programme has cost the state $260 (£159) per child, including maintenance costs, equipment repairs, training for the teachers and internet connection. The total figure represents less than 5% of the country's education budget. Around 70% of the XO model laptops handed out by the government were given to children who did not have computers at home. "This is not simply the handing out of laptops or an education programme. It is a programme which seeks to reduce the gap between the digital world and the world of knowledge," explained Miguel Brechner, director of the Technological Laboratory of Uruguay and in charge of Plan Ceibal. Knew about that since September. My Spanish teacher told me.
Weren't XO Computers regarded as massive failures on a scale rarely seen in Modern Society? Scratch that, I'm thinking of the One Laptop per Child program.
I think I'm thinking of the One Laptop Per Child program.
He-he U r gay
Wonder if they sell them in the states.
Would love to try the XO, Too bad you can't change it's firmware without a developer key, so No windows fun for you.
Doubt it would be able to run anything above windows 2000, it has a 400 mhz processor.
They're trialing giving out laptops in my school. About 3-4 kids in each of my classes have one (classes of 25 people or so). Then if it works out this year they might give them to everyone. Except I'm changing schools. :bang:
They are all probably shit anyhow, but it is nice that the country cares about education and want to provide a resource for its students. I wonder how many kids they are going to bust for fapping in the bathroom.
I would mod the fuck out of mine if we had them where I live. I say that because I think they are allowed to keep them, seeing as they all paid $260 for them and that most people there don't have a computer at home, so $260 is probably quite a bit of money to them.
In Australia, NSW. Every student in a public school gets a laptop this year if they're in year 9. I got mine, and there are some areas which it improves my work, and others which it is just a distraction.
My school is too shitty to give a laptop to every student in school
with a amazing 128mb of ram!
That's nice for them.
This just in: Porn searches from Uruguay skyrocket!
That laptop is so cool
Doubt it would be able to run anything above windows 2000, it has a 400 mhz processor.
i've run xp on a 250 mhz processor. and i've run vista on a 500 mhz processor (1.6 ghz intel atom downclocked to 500 mhz) [editline]10:22PM[/editline]
My school is too shitty to give a laptop to every student in school
schools cant afford 2000 laptops dumbass.
My school handed us all Macbooks... 1.83 GHz intel core duo 1 GB ram Wish they would have gotten us PCs... What's up with schools having a hard-on for macs?
Oprah is behind this.
That's a chill laptop
They're total shit and can only run MS Word on medium graphics anyway, you might as well get your own for like £50
They did something like this in Portugal the last couple of years. The incredible "Magalhães". It's shitty as hell but every 5 year old in Portugal has one. Also, it has XP and Linux "Magic Box". :buddy:
If you have a laptop at school you'll know how it doesn't really improve school performance. There are perks, but it does nothing major. Except maybe you don't have to line up to use school computers if there is a wireless network.
schools cant afford 2000 laptops dumbass.
I think they can They get like $15000 per student
I think they can They get like $15000 per student
cause schools don't need to pay teachers or pay for supplies.
cause schools don't need to pay teachers or pay for supplies.
They already buy new laptops for school use every few years anyway
What are they going to do with the laptops if they have nothing to eat
What are they going to do with the laptops if they have nothing to eat
Eat the laptops, obviously.
my school couldve gone with laptops. but nooooo we had to buy pointless fucking smart boards for every room.
my school couldve gone with laptops. but nooooo we had to buy pointless fucking smart boards for every room.
That's exactly why my school is shit. They spent all their money on smart boards that don't work sometimes and that we don't use half the time. They could've spent it on something useful, such as art supplies or laptops.
