Every Chevrolet Camaro built since General Motors relaunched the pony car in 2010 – some 511,508 cars worldwide — was recalled today after GM discovered drivers could accidentally turn the car off with their knees, the same problem at the heart of the deadly Chevy Cobalt recall.
GM says it's aware of only three crashes with four minor injuries linked to the problem, that the ignition switches in the Camaro aren't to blame and that the recall (along with three other minor recalls also announced today) demonstrate how it's now trying to jump on safety problems as soon as they emerge. But the Camaro recall touches the core Chevy fan base in a way that other recalls haven't.
According to GM, after the recall of 2.6 million Chevy Cobalts and other older GM models for bad ignition switches, the company began testing other models to see if drivers could also bump the key into the accessory or off position while driving. It found that if Camaro drivers were sitting close enough to the steering wheel, they could bump the combined key/fob.
That's a bit of a Knee-Jerk reaction.
I feel bad any time there is a recall for some minor part. If it ever happened to me, I would be concerned about the safety of my car but I would feel bad about anything that would cost the company (who's obviously very troubled as-is) money.
Like, in this case they say you can set it off if you sit too far forward. I always drive with my seat 100% back anyway. I wonder how many thousands they'd have to spend to recall my vehicle and repair such a trivial thing...
Can't you do this in any car if you sit far forward and have long enough legs that hit the steering column.
If it's that much a concern just have the key in the center of the car above the stereo.
lol this has happened on my deadly saturn already, why they put the key so low on the collumn idk

One of the Jalopnik writers (it must be the only non shit gawker site) did a video trying to do it. He struggled even when intentionally trying to do it.
He concluded that if the seat and wheel were in the right place you might be able to do it by accident.
So, how could it have absolutely nothing to do with the ignition switch, when bumping the ignition switch with your knee is what triggers the problem?
You basically have to purposefully knee the ignition switch to cause any issues on the camaro, but its not any different than all the other cars from other manufacturers who use the same style key.

Because protruding objects from the dash are against regulations now. It's why stereos keep getting flatter and flatter
Most cars have safety features to prevent the car being taken out of ignition when in drive. My challenger won't allow the keyfob to turn off if i pull the push start button out unless it's in park. The push start button won't work with the car in drive either. It only works if the car is in park.

They see it as being cheaper in the long-run than extensively testing the product. You are, effectively, a beta-tester for a car.

Except for the fact that the wipers and indicators have switched sides. So when I was learning in the Driving Instructors car I would always turn on the wipers when turning and turn on the indicators when it rained.
calling it now, all 2015 models go keyless because fuck it, we've been sued to the point where thats a cheaper option

thats not even accurate and i hate it when the cell phone companies talk about that. they test a ton of other stuff, this was just an accident of unimagination, nobody at GM probably ever switched it off like that so they never thought to test if long legged people could accidentally die
Not really sure what they could possibly do to fix this, or why its a problem in the first place.
Hell my ranger will turn off if the passenger kicks the firewall hard enough, because it will trigger the inertia switch to cut the fuel. It was never recalled for it.
My challenger doesn't shut off if it's in D and you push the start button or if you remove the start button and use the keyfob as the key. You can keep fucking turning the key fob left and right but unless the car is in park it wont shut off.

Who gives a fuck? They should be taking it in and getting it sorted, because frankly with an issue like that it should never have gotten on the road in the first place.

You bought a Challanger in Automatic? What were you thinking, man?

Keyless would be cheaper as it is, instead of a lock barrel and lots of things moving, you have a button, and a RFID setup to detect the key,
something something Fight Club something something Recall vs. Compensation for future accidents something something

Apparently on my friend's late 90's SAAB 9-3, you could effectively disable the ability to unlock the car from the inside of the vehicle if you locked it a certain way. Seriously, you pull the unlock posts up and pull the door handle and it would not unlock the door. And the power unlock button was disabled.
We called it "rape mode".
Well, good thing I have the 2012 model.
Yeah, so your eligible for the recall.
And they thought it was a good idea to move to Mexico...

My mom's 2003 Silverado 2500HD was recalled because the tailgate cables weren't strong enough and could snap. This is shit you figure out in the design/engineering phase.
The cables on my dads 96 silverados tailgate are also snapped, meanwhile the metal hinges on my 88 k1500 silverados tailgate are still as strong as the day they left the factory.

I realized it but you failed. It's not even about that; learn to torque converters.
You bought a Challanger in Automatic? What were you thinking, man?
Late but, Iirc, until the Hellcat, a manual wasn't an option.
I can't believe people still buy cars from General Mistake
