My uni's band program recently put together a prog rock cover band, and they played stuff from Rush, Porcupine Tree, and Dream Theater at their first concert. Thought some of you guys would enjoy it. (:
They already get a gold star from me for covering a DT song, both because I love that band and because DT is quite difficult to cover. The fact that they managed to play the whole thing is pretty great, too. These are some talented guys.
Did the audience like it? I always thought of prog metal as a bit of a novelty genre. Now don't get me wrong, I like progressive rock and metal, but I think it's not easy to 'get' the appeal if you're not really into music or a musician yourself. In my experience a lot of the cool technical aspects like polyrhythms or creative use of harmonics are lost on casual listeners who might not really pay attention to things like that and just think of it as an alright song. I'm not saying prog rock is superior or inferior to anything, all musical taste is subjective, I just always felt like there is a specific audience for it, outside of which it's not as distinguished from regular rock or metal.
Anyway, its a great cover, very talented band, just wondering if the audience did appreciate how cool that song was

I agree! I was so hyped when they played DT, as they lean towards the heavier sides of my taste but at the same time achieve the depth of musicality I look for in a band.

The audience loved it! Gave them a standing ovation after they were done with everything. Other highlights include:
"Enigma Machine" - DT
"La Villa Strangiato" - Rush
"YYZ" Rush
"Nil Recurring" - Porcupine Tree
"State of Grace" - Liquid Tension Experiment
Which were all received well. Glad you all enjoyed it! (:
