STOCKHOLM, May 21 (Xinhua) -- An eruption has started in Iceland's most active volcano Grimsvotn, according to reports reaching here from Reykjavik on Saturday.
The smoke from the eruption can be seen from many places in south Iceland, Iceland's television channel RUV said in a report.
Iceland's Meteorological Office also confirmed that an eruption had begun in Grimsvotn.
"All indications are that an eruption will start in this area," Icelandic geologist Hjorleifur Sveinbjornsson was quoted as saying earlier on Saturday by the local media.
But scientists in Iceland believed that the new eruption in Grimsvotn could be small and would not lead to a repeat of the air travel chaos in Europe one year ago,
which was caused by ashes from the Eyjafjallajokul volcano's eruption.
Located in the middle of the Vatnajokull glacier, Grimsvotn is the most active volcano in Iceland, with major eruptions recorded in 1922, 1933, 1934, 1938, 1
945, 1954, 1983, 1998 and 2004. Most of the eruptions lasted one to three weeks.

Really nice photo aye?
Yeah, pretty cool eruption. Not expected to be as bad as last years though, as the article says :v:
That's absolutely beautiful
Fuck me. Not this again :sigh:
Atleast it is smaller.
Just saw it on TV and it looks amazing
Well at least it won't be a repeat of last year.
lets hope Jayjajaffajokull isn't affected. The world is running out of places with silly names that sound like they were muttered from a drunk when he stumbled out of the bar one night.
I always mistype on my keyboard, and it looks like Icelandic spelling.
Oh, of all the fucking...
That's just marvelous; now the rapture-retards are going to latch onto this eruption and say it had something to do with their prophecy...
usually i mention bjork when iceland is mentioned
today i will break the mold by saying:
that photo would make a cool album cover for sigur ros

what happened to that seismologist or something named Thor Thorvaldson
let's hear more from him
also i'm 100% certain that it's not bjorn, it's Björn which means it's pronounced bjern thank you very much
Oh god, I can't stop laughing at these words and names.

Did you guys hear about the eruption near Florjeykejor?
I'm convinced that is actually a place.
We need an icelandic name generator.
Call the Grimbarians; we're going to war.
Volcano doesn't like the name Iceland.

Iceland was once named Garðarshólmi
