Virgin Media will double the speed of its broadband service for more than four million of its customers, the company has said.
The upgrade, which begins in February, will also see the service's top speed increase from 100Mbps to 120Mbps.
The full rollout is expected to be complete by mid-2013 at a cost to the company of £110m.
If you're with Virgin Media and want to check when your speed is being doubled in your area: http://doublespeed.virginmedia.com/
I kept seeing ads on my way home so I checked if they were upgrading my area, but we don't even have fibre optic here yet! :(
I get 100 Mbps right now with Charter. I actually get free upgrades every time they increase their speeds, since I pay for the highest speed they offer.
awesome, means i'll be getting 60 Mbps!
Kick ass, its about time broadband companies started working on their connections.
Wasn't BT planning to do this too?
[release]Looks like the postcode you entered is not in a Virgin Media fibre optic broadband area. No worries. If you're a Virgin Media customer getting broadband down your phone line, the good news is you're already getting the fastest speed we can give you.
If you're not with us yet, then take a look at our latest broadband offers.[/release]
WHAT A FUCKING SURPRISE
holy shit 120mbps
Yay, I'm living in the middle of germany in a 50.000 people city and all I get is 300 kb/s down :(
So I'll be getting 60 megabit broadband soon?
pfff they might try getting broadband to all parts of the UK first, all that I have around where I live is slow DSL that is rarely faster than 2mbps.
awesome, means i'll be getting 60 Mbps!
They aren't doubling anything apart from the 50mb package. They confirmed this a couple of weeks ago.
They should focus on getting fiber optic to everyone. I checked on the checkermabob and it says that fiber optic connection isn't avalible to us. :smith:

Yeah but they didn't do shit in my area when we were promised, they even tried to cover up that fact.
Exact reason why my family moved to Virgin.
Also hell yeah should be doubled by Spring.

That's some goddamn fast internet speeds. I only have 2Mbps :(
Mine is coming October 2012 - July 2013.
Great.
Yeah, mine's gonna be doubled too, also October 2012 - July 2013

wrong.
I'm on the 20mbps (XL) package and they told me just yesterday I will be getting a complimentary boost to 60mbps in the next few months.
120mbps.... aaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwww yyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeaaaaaahhhhhhhhh.
My Linux distros will be downloaded in seconds.
Wasn't BT planning to do this too?
Openreach is trialling it at the moment, the trials are due to end in March so after that they will presumably start rolling it out
BT's speed calculator on their site is already upgraded but they've capped it at 40 Mbps for the moment, if you go and use it now you should see that it will give you exactly 40 Mbps no matter what
I wonder if the Student 9 month 30mb offer will be doubled too.
July onwards? Seems reasonable.
Virgin is a pretty cool ISP, this will be the second or third time they've increased my speed for free. That said I'm not too fond of their traffic shaping.

[del]Why am I being rated disagree for this post, they put out multiple press statements saying this. Including one specificity saying 30mb was not being upgraded.[/del]
DISREGARD THIS I APPARENTLY CANT READ.
[editline]3rd February 2012[/editline]
wrong.

That isn't doubling though, they are just scrapping the lower packages.
3 weeks late, already a thread here: http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1154633

The 50mb package is being upgraded to 100mb in April, then upgraded again to 120mb, meaning everyone on the 100mb and 50mb will pay the 50mb price and get 120mb.
does that mean mine will go from 50 to 100? or is it only for the lower speed customers like 20mbps
I'm not in the fibre optic network :(
Fibre aint even available yet in my area, BT have fibre in my area. Shame really.
yeah Virgin customers were told this about a month ago. It feels awesome. :>
I can see the fucking cable exchange from outside my window and all I can get is 25mb down/1.1mb up.
I pay a shit-ton for cable and only get like 12mb down and a few mb's up.
I wish US providers would get on the whole fiber-optic thing.
