• Ryan, a short film

Ryan Larkin was an animator and filmmaker who was born in Canada in 1943. He rose to fame with his short film Walking, made from thousands of drawings of people moving. It was nominated for an Academy Award. He later made another film, Street Musique, while employed by the National Film Board of Canada; he made several other films and pieces of art during his time there. During this time, he became addicted to cocaine. He also lost his tenure at the NFB after his production of films and art ceased due to cocaine abuse, although it may also have been partially due to the mural he was invited to create:
Never one to forget an encore, in 1975 Larkin was invited to create a mural for the NFB. What he drew was likely not what it had envisioned--an adolescent with an erection who may or may not have been ejaculating. The mural was 20 by 15 feet. "It was meant to be a satirical commentary on masculinity because at the dine there was a year-long festival going on about women's rights. It was supposed to be comic relief from all their self-conscious seriousness."
He became an out-of-work alcoholic and lived on Skid Row in Montreal off of spare change for some time after this. In 2004, an animator named Chris Landreth, who had been inspired by Walking, tracked him down and interviewed him. He then made this incredible short film, Ryan. You can view it here: http://nfb.ca/film/ryan This is without doubt the best short film I have seen. If you're confused, the states of the character's minds and emotions are represented by the state of their bodies. Be sure to select "high quality" and view it in full screen. It's worth it. If you are a lazy coward, here is the low-quality, tiny Youtube version: I'm currently uploading a file to my website with very high quality; I'll post it here when it's done. Edit: Download! http://bunnitude.com/misc/files/Chris%20Landreth%20-%20Ryan%20(2004).avi Ryan's film Walking can be seen here: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5440906293139687271 And here is Street Musique: After Ryan was made, Ryan managed to beat his alcoholism and started producing animations again. Sadly, he died in 2007 of lung cancer, which spread to his brain. :( I hope you enjoyed the film as much as I did.
I'll try to watch it if I get a chance
I'll try to watch it if I get a chance
You won't regret it
Oh wow. I remember watching this film years back when it aired on teletoon late at night. It was so messed up, but that is defiantly what kept me watching it. Thanks for posting this.
Watched it, really liked it.
Oh dear fuck, i'm high and watching it now. Holy Fuck
Oh dear fuck, i'm high and watching it now. Holy Fuck
bad idea dude
oh shit, great film, saw it on IFC once.
RIP. This film is fantastic, it actually won an Academy Award in 2004. If I ever have kids, I'm going to have them grow up with NFB animation. No mindless Disney Channel crap :zoid: The Big Snit (a hilarious classic)
Awesome film. Captured Ryan, which I felt sorry for... Cause he went from :clint: to :Dawkins102:
Zoned out a bit too far while watching this. Feels like I'm in a house within another one.
I wish he would have done more... it almost seemed too short. Very good find.

that was awesome
I was hoping this was a Bioshock movie.
Great stuff OP
Surprised no one has asked for a copy of the 20x15 foot mural of an erection.
Surprised no one has asked for a copy of the 20x15 foot mural of an erection.
I don't think there are any pictures of it; they probably painted over it
that was amazing anyone have any ideas as to what the ribbons that constrict them represent? I figured it was censorship (especially taking the mural into consideration) and the way that human attributes hold us back from our endeavors That was brilliant.
