Max Verstappen becomes youngest F1 race winner at 18 years old
Max Verstappen won the Spanish GP on his Red Bull debut after Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg eliminated each other on the first lap.
The two Mercedes drivers collided on the run to Turn Four leaving both cars in the gravel and out of the race.
The 18-year-old becomes the youngest winner in F1 history and gives justification to Red Bull's decision to thrust him into the senior team.
Pretty devastating for Kvyat though, demoted down to Toro Rosso after wrecking Vettel's race 2 weeks ago, and then his replacement wins his first race on his debut with Red Bull
Thanks for spoiling the race for me . Thought I'd be safe to browse Facepunch
I have never been this happier watching F1 honestly. I've always thought he'd do okay in a better car, but first? Never would've thought. I fucking loving today man. Great day not for Max, but for The Netherlands since they have their own hero now.
Also Vettel: "HONESTLY WHAT ARE WE DOING"

See I'm so fucking happy MERC finally didn't win. Bastards took the fun out of it and now that they crashed out, I've never seen such a close race since around 2 years. Fuck man.

tbh if you're browsing headlines on race day without wanting to get spoiled, it's your own fault

Sports, despite being competitions of merit and ability, are perhaps the largest offenders of 'it's who you know rather than what you know'. It's more than likely that either of his parents were previously in motorsports themselves, and because of that he's probably been racing in junior leagues for years and years until someone put the right word in at the right place and he got into F1
Bastards took the fun out of it
That's why I stopped watching the races a few years ago. RBR was doing it, I could with 85% accuracy guess the race winner. I was at first excited to see that RBR finally got fucked back into having to work for their wins...oh now Mercedes is doing the same shit.
I may very well go back to NASCAR. At least there you don't get the situation of 'Dominant team blasts past everyone in quali then checks out for the race'. The cars there are so samey that it's still more driver skill and crew chief's skill than the car itself.

Or possibly he bought his way in. The right combination of talent and Benjamins will get you a drive. Whether or not it's a successful one depends on the talent side of the equation, though...or, in some cases, the car, as we see currently with Merc and for the previous few years with RBR.

Both of Verstappens parents are motorsports drivers, his mother was in karting and Jos Verstappen was a F1 driver as well.
Motorsports are expensive as well, when I was little I wanted to get into karting but you have to buy your own kart, trailer, space to store your kart if you don't have a garage, and pay to be a part of a club that races on a track. My parents looked into it but it wasn't something they could afford.
You can't really blame Mercedes for building a really fast and good car then sitting two of the best drivers in them. It's the fault of the other teams for not being good enough to compete with them.

Dutch live commentary during the last few corners of the race.

Also, the Dutch after-race commentators completely losing it in the studio.
Fun thing is, Tom Coronel apparently made a cheeky bet on both Mercedes cars crashing out in the first lap, and Max Verstappen winning the race.
But yeah, absolutely amazing race. I thought at first that it would be wonderful if Verstappen even scored a podium spot after both Mercedes cars crashed out, or that he would lead for just a few laps, I couldn't believe too that he would actually win the race. It got really tense at the end though, when Ricciardo suffered a sudden tyre failure. Absolutely amazing drive from Verstappen though, a flawless race from him.

Well, Max Verstappen is the son of former F1 driver Jos Verstappen, and there are more drivers on the grid whose fathers raced in Formula One prior. Nico Rosberg is the son of 1982 World Champion Keke Rosberg, Kevin Magnussen is the son of former F1 driver Jan Magnussen, Joylon Palmer is the son of former F1 driver Jonathan Palmer, and Carlos Sainz jr. obliviously being the son of two-times WRC Champion Carlos Sainz. Jenson Button's father, John Button, was a British Rallycross driver in the 1970s-1980s.
So yeah, there are a load of current F1 drivers whose parents were involved in motorsport prior. Other than that, it's down to being massively talented, especially if you don't have family driving in motorsport prior, or don't have a bunch of wealthy sponsors, and even then, you have to be good or lucky enough to get scouted by a F1 team all the way to a F1 seat. And with how it is going with most F1 teams these days, they opt to choose for pay drivers who bring in a good amount of sponsors and thus money, despite there being enough talent available.

can you imagine people are actually blaming hamilton for this
[sp]regardless im glad they wiped themselves out[/sp]

I'd say that has more to do with a lack of anti-competitive laws in place to keep teams balanced, really.
Not that other racing series haven't devolved into the same issue, of course.

Not hamiltons fault imo. Apparently Rosberg was also in the wrong engine mode

That only really works as far as midfield and backmarker teams go. Sure, it takes money to get through the junior formula, but the likes of Red Bull/Ferrari/Mercedes and even Williams have driver programs to get talent that catches their interest into F1.
There are only 3 pay drivers in F1 now, Nasr and Ericsson at Sauber and Haryanto at Manor (no coincidence those are the last 2 teams). Perez at Force India does have sponsorship, but he's very highly rated so the money is more or less incidental, while Wehrlien in the other Manor is there because Mercedes want him as future replacement for Lewis or Nico and are giving Manor access to their windtunnel in exchange for the F1 experience.
