Pope Francis on Saturday encouraged Brazil's young people, who have protested against corruption in their country, to continue their efforts to change society by fighting apathy and offering "a Christian response." The 76-year-old pope spoke to a crowd estimated by the Vatican to be more than 2 million people gathered on Rio's famed Copacabana beach for an evening rally where he also urged young people to shun fleeting fads and be "athletes of Christ."
Francis, nearly concluding his first overseas trip, received yet another rapturous welcome when he arrived at the crescent-shaped beach. He stopped his popemobile several times to kiss babies and an Argentine flag that was waved at the car.
hell a lot better than soldiers of christ
Has there ever actually been an attempt on the Pope's life that warranted a bullet-proof bubblemobile?
[editline]oh hamburgers[/editline]
Don't blame me for not knowing about this, I'm too busy collecting gas masks and copies of The Athiest Manifesto to study ignorant religion.
Fair sure there was an attempt on his life while he was in brazil on this trip because he didn't initially use it

Why is this pope so cool. I thought support change kind of went against what the church stood for for many, many years.
I read that atheists of christ at first.
"Welp I gotta see what this's about."

Are you forgetting about the coolest Pope ever?
To be fair, Pope Francis is a serious contender for the title.

he is way better than john paul II, at least his act isn't for the sake of PR only.
he is way better than john paul II, at least his act isn't for the sake of PR only.
Is that what John Paul II did?
I don't understand why this Pope is so popular with non-believers, the PR is really getting to you guys. I bet it would all evaporate as soon as he started condemning abortion, contraceptives, same-sex marriage etc.

the thing is he's pro contraception, something that was killing people under the old pope
sure he's a bad person and i think that people forget this but he's the least-worst

he's the pope
he's the pope
"george bush is a bad person because he was the president and the US does bad stuff sometimes so the leader has to be bad"
sheesh. no, all evidence suggests that he is a very very good person, and you should be able to recognize that regardless of your religious beliefs.

Good idea

The thing is, he isn't doing those things.
People would condemn Obama is he started condemning abortion too, but that doesn't matter because he isn't.
Also I'm so sick of these types of threads. It's like if something/somebody does something you do like, it's PR. If they do something you don't like, you can call them out and hate on them.
Maybe they're just doing good shit? Maybe it's not a PR operation?
Labeling an entity as gargantuan as the church as inherently "bad" is a stupid idea because when they do something good you're bound to do some mental gymnastics to make it so that the good isn't actually good. It's some cognitive dissonance bullshit. Just say "oh that's cool they did that, that's good" when it's good, and say "oh damn they did bad again, shame" when it's bad. Don't spout bullshit about PR.
I've seen this in so many threads it's disgusting. EA supports gay rights? Obviously just a PR stunt, they're an inherently shitty company that can do no good because cognitive dissonance tells me so. The church is making good moves for once? Well, they're trying to make up for all the bad stuff, so it's not real good because it isn't genuine.
Just take the fucking bad with the fucking good, christ.

He condemn's it, he is the Pope, he isn't reforming the Church, he isn't some hardcore liberal that is going to bring the Church into line with modern culture, it's simply that the media is trying to portray him that way.

I think the reason so many admire him is because he appears to at least tolerate other actions normally condemned by other entities claiming to be christian.
As a matter of a fact, I think I read an article where he stated you can be gay and go to heaven, a statement any other bible-thumping one-true-way christian would scoff at and denounce.
Keep in mind the church has large sway over what is and isn't accepted and will continue to protect the status quot in the next few decades, when the older bishops and cardinals die out or resign then maybe we will see further progressive moments, but for now this man is a step in the right direction for promoting actual christian behavior and not unfounded persecution and finger pointing found in other christian associations.

he isn't hardcore liberal, but he is somewhat liberal by catholic pope standards.
Is that what John Paul II did?
john paul II was one of the most conservative popes, he tried to undo as much of the vatican II as he could, he simply had extremely good PR.

welcome to the cynical 21st century
This isn't going to solve anything, religion gives rise to corruption, it doesn't fix it.

Every ideological stance has the ability to lead to corruption. Having a totally secular state would give rise to corruption.
Every ideological stance has the ability to lead to corruption. Having a totally secular state would give rise to corruption.
How would that work?
Wouldn't people realize that they're giving rise to corruption?
Perhaps I was wrong, what I meant to say is that if replace religion with something secular, it will lower corruption drastically but it will still exist.
How's that?
"One million brazilian"
Sounds like a number

There's a joke about Bush and the Brazilians
George Bush was receiving his daily report from his Defence Secretary, Donald Rumsfeld.
During the report, Rumsfeld said; “And yesterday, three Brazilian soldiers were killed in Iraq.” George suddenly went pale, put his head in his hands and began to sweat profusely.
His staff were astounded. They had never seen the president react like this to such a small loss. Then, after he had recovered slightly, the president brought his head up and quietly asked the aide next to him, "Just how many in a brazilian?"
Observe the Soviet Union.
Secular state, embraced atheism ardently. Toward the end of the country's lifetime, it was plagued with internal corruption.
Observe 1980's Wall street. (Not a country, I know but work with me.)
Secular society, no gods or kings only profit. Rife with corruption, and the abuse of power.
Religion does not corrupt things, people do. Religion is practiced by people.
