Graffiti (singular: graffito; the plural is used as a mass noun) is the name for images or lettering scratched, scrawled, painted or marked in any manner on property. Graffiti is any type of public markings that may appear in the forms of simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Graffiti has existed since ancient times, with examples dating back to Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire.
In modern times, spray paint, normal paint and markers have become the most commonly used materials. In most countries, defacing property with graffiti without the property owner's consent is considered vandalism, which is punishable by law. Sometimes graffiti is employed to communicate social and political messages. To some, it is an art form worthy of display in galleries and exhibitions; to others it is merely vandalism. Graffiti has since evolved into a pop culture existence often related to underground hip hop music and b-boying creating a lifestyle that remains hidden from the general public.
Graffiti can be used as a gang signal to mark territory or to serve as an indicator or "tag" for gang-related activity. The controversies that surround graffiti continue to create disagreement amongst city officials/ law enforcement and writers looking to display their work in public locations. There are many different types and styles of graffiti and it is a rapidly developing art form whose value is highly contested, being reviled by many authorities while also subject to protection, sometimes within the same jurisdiction.

I hate people that do tags, they're so uninspired.
I really need to get back into doing some nice pieces though, haven't done anything major for like a year:goleft:

I like tags, but I don't think they should be over done.
This one time I drew a dick in a bathroom stall. I'm such a cool graffiti artist.
There are some places here which have awesome graffiti, but most of the graffiti are some silly ugly looking tags.
You need some overly popular Banksy up on that OP.

Such a rebel. You deserve a can of paint, good sir.

Fuck, I was literally about to mention him and then i saw this

Give me something to put, and it'll go up there.
Stuff like this is awesome:

My big brother works on projects about graffiti and takes loads of pictures of them while the artists are still working on them, or during events or other sorts of places left alone.
Here's one.

you made a graffiti thread without once mentioning banksy
you'd best edit it quick

Does this piece have a meaning to it, or just completely random. :raise:
Tags can be really nice if they are intelligent & pretty. Finding a good tag is actually very difficult... Graffiti in general is really difficult, as any artform
[editline]07:50PM[/editline]
I saw some crazy tags in Paris...
Does this piece have a meaning to it, or just completely random. :raise:
Yeah it does have a meaning. I don't know what though. xD Maybe about the political being Nazis? Just a random thought!
dirty criminals defacing public property

Banksy isn't as much a graffiti artist as he's a stencil artist. Yeah, you use spray paint for both but it's really not the same.

By that definition he's a graffiti artist but you have got a point. Freestyle graffiti is much more impressive (when it's good).
I like character graffiti. Like the stuff Fafi, Miss van, and kid acne do. I have some grafiti books and mags stored on my computer.
On the subject here is some of the stuff I do. I don't do much on buildings due to the fact I have 2 friends who got pretty heavily fined for getting caught.

You'd be supprised at how much of his work is freehand though. There's a video somewhere of him in action with shepard fairey, he has a tiny stencil for the rats head and the rest is all freehand.
Influential writes section should really have Seen in though, as he is really the most infulentail writer ever. Just sayin'.

Ah, I totally forgot about him.
I'm proud this thread has drifted towards Banksy... As you may or may not know, he comes from Bristol (UK), and I live just outside there... He's done art around the towns around Bristol too. I drive past this one every day to college, it's in Glastonbury, showing perhaps his rage towards Michael Eavis letting Jay Z play at glasto 2 years ago.

He also done this in the town I live by

And we can't forget this one, such a classic.

Bristols a great place for street art, there's a lot of talented artists down there. But in my opinion banksy gets far too much credit. One minutes it's left wing political pieces the next he's selling atwork for $100,000. Can't say I wouldn't sell my stuff for that much if I could, it just seems a little hypocritical to me.
That paddington one isn't a banksy though.
Someone "tagged" my garbage bin.
What the fuck.
Who would be that desperate, seriously..

It was probably someone new, or an asshole.
Banksy's work is incredible.
Is graffiti supposed to be readable? It takes me about a minute per letter...
