(CNN) -- Thomas Kinkade, one of the most popular artists in America, has died at his California home, his family said.
He was 54.
Family and friends recalled the artist as a generous man, who inspired others and will missed.
"He had a rare ability to exude a sense of warmth, a transcendent light," said Robert Goodwin, who wrote the book "Points of Light: A Celebration of the American Spirit of Giving," with Kinkade.
"He had a great commitment to inspire others -- one who was nurtured in his early life by family and friends and church to really be an example of selfless acts of service," he said Saturday.
Kinkade's death at his Los Gatos home appeared to be from natural causes, according to the family.
"Thom provided a wonderful life for his family,'' his wife, Nanette, said in a statement late Friday night. "We are shocked and saddened by his death.''
Art from the self-described "painter of light," adorns many living rooms in America. It emphasizes simple pleasures and warm, positive images of idyllic cottages, lighthouses and colorful gardens.
"My mission as an artist is to capture those special moments in life adorned with beauty and light," Kinkade said in a message on his website. "I work to create images that project a serene simplicity that can be appreciated and enjoyed by everyone. That's what I mean by sharing the light."
Kinkade painted more than 1,000 pieces on various topics, including cabins, nature scenes, seascapes and classic Americana.
In 2006, the artist recalled one of his earliest lessons during an interview with CNN's Larry King.
"When I was a young boy, my mother told me, 'Your talents are God's gifts to you, and what you do with those talents are your gift to God,'" he said.
As obnoxious as his paintings were, this still comes as a shock. My condolences to the family.
His memory will live on in Something Awful edits.

Natural causes at 54?!

I think it was the collective bad mojo of all the professional artists who hated his guts.
His paintings remind me a lot of Norman Rockwell. A lot of them were just the perfect scene, always calm and serene.
That's a shame. Paintings look nice. rip

I have a feeling there will be a ton of post humorus work released incrementaly.
And if he really did get a sweat shop type labor force to do his work, now will be the time to come forward and not ask for a single penny.
I was just thinking about this guy this morning for some reason when I woke up, and how kitschy his paintings were.
Just got a huge painting made by him at a yard sale for 75$... Quite beautiful. Sad to hear this though :(
I hate his paintings so much, but sad to see a man die when he could of had so many years left.
I've never really seen any of his work. Why is it so bad? Can anyone post examples?
What the bloody hell is wrong with his artwork? Why do people dislike it? They look fine to me.

i had no idea who he is until this thread but looking at the work posted it's pretty clear he knew nothing about economy of design and from reading up on him it seems his attitude was pretty bad???
what the hell does 'economy of design' even mean

it means don't pile a whole bunch of shit on one painting so your eyes bleed from all the colours.
idunno his shit seems like epic poetry of painting
if that makes any sense
The man spewed forth his religious views and his work was kitschy as all get-out. Though nobody deserves to die just because their artwork is terrible.
I had read an obituary on some website and nearly every single positive point about him was from his own website and the man was quiiiite full of himself.
The only problem I have with his paintings are his lack of contrast/shadows. They have no focal points.

like bad high school poetry.
rest in piece my condolences to his family...

how do you always manage to have the worst opinion on every single subject no matter what it is

thomas kinkade's paintings were hardly art
they are god-awful norman rockwell clones

are you dissing bjork?
i think you're dissing bjork...

actually he's right the paintings aren't really worthy of much mention and this guy was kinda mediocre and a dick. but at the same time thisispain didn't act rude and even said "rest in piece my condolences to his family..."
what is ur deal

They're incredibly bland
to anyone saying that this isn't art

is a moron. it may not follow all of the artistic principles you like, but it is a helluva lot better than 90% of most people out there could do.
it is art, just not good art
Just looking at what has been posted, his art isn't terrible, but it isn't really that great either. The Bambi one is legitimately a fucking mess, and I see where people are coming from with them "lacking subtlety". I mean, an eagle flying out of a bolt of lightning? Shit.
No, I think this is pretty cool stuff and people who say it's terrible because it doesn't follow some "art rules" are hella dumb tbh.
