Robert Alexander had a lengthy criminal record and no fixed address.

Donnell Thompson was a fan of Michael Jackson and the Los Angeles Lakers and attended classes for the mentally disabled at El Camino College.

Early on a July morning, the two strangers’ lives intersected in tragic fashion.

Alexander stole a Honda Civic at gunpoint and opened fire on sheriff’s deputies in Compton before disappearing into the neighborhood, authorities said.

As Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies searched for Alexander, they found Thompson and mistook him for the carjacking suspect, shooting him dead.
Fuck's sake, there has to be some punishment for this. Yet another example where better training and a more sensible outlook instilled into the police force would've probably prevented such a tragedy from occurring. Then again, the cynic in me says it's likely the LEOs involved are probably going to be placed on administrative leave and nothing more will come of it unless the family themselves sue the LA County police.
Thompson did not respond to commands to show his hands, to stand up or to put his hands behind his head, sheriff’s officials said. SWAT deputies arrived and repeated the commands, but Thompson remained motionless, lying on his side with his left hand underneath his head and his right hand under his midsection, Katz and Corina said.
Even when the SWAT deputies set off “flash-bang” explosives, Thompson was unresponsive. Only when he was hit with foam bullets did he rouse himself, pushing himself onto his feet and “bolting” toward an armored vehicle, Corina said.
Deputies at the scene reported that Thompson had his right hand at his waistband as he was running, Katz said.
Seems pretty justified by that account, of course the article tries to paint this emotional narrative at the start and the quotes in the OP paint the picture that police just rolled up and opened fire.

He refused to respond to any commands and charged towards an armored swat vehicle. He was shot twice by one person, which given the amount of people on scene seems to suggest that the situation was very controlled.

Yea it would be nice if some actual information about the shooting was in the OP, as the person above said, it seems like they saw him and shot him on sight
Reading trough the article, and then whats written in the OP, it's clear that OP intentionally left out critical information in order to perhaps push an agenda.

Its Axelord, of course he is.

He was mentally ill.
He was mentally ill.
Are you really doing this again?

Do you think Police are psychic or something?

My point is, if it's a mentally ill person you shouldn't treat it like he deserved to die and was some radical anti-police thug.

Name the user in this thread who said something even remotely close to that and give me their post, and tell me how the police were supposed to know he was mentally ill and handle the situation differently, please.

Instead of asking how the police could have known he was mentally ill, ask why they feel justified using lethal force against an unarmed suspect who A. They have not identified, and B. That they had completely surrounded.
They could have used tasers, they used rubber bullets before.
Besides that someone who doesn't respond to command/orders by the police could very well be blind and deaf, and started to run because he felt he was being punched.
There's a lot of different ways that this could have went and it seems like the LA sheriff's office took the easy way which led to this guy being shot and killed.
Before you say "you have no clue what you're talking about" my girlfriends dad has worked in law enforcement for 30+ years and never had to shoot someone. That's because he communicates and talks to people, and doesn't give them orders unless he is forced to. The police could have gone up to this guy just as easily and asked what was going on and for identification, but instead they surround him and order him to do something. Quite possibly they even called his name as the other suspect, which he could have thought they were giving the commands to someone else.
again, there's a lot of ways this could have went.

Until video of the confrontation gets out ( I didn't see any in the source but I'm on mobile) it's hard to say for sure if this was justified or preventable. I'd be more inclined to agree with it being justified if Video comes out.
