Disney's reboot will take over Imax’s large-format pioneer's screens for four weeks, knocking out all would-be competitors (Sorry, 'In the Heart of the Sea' and 'The Revenant').
---
For Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Imax is going big — really big. For the first four weeks of its run, set to begin Dec. 18, J.J. Abrams' sequel will have all of Imax's large-format screens in North America and most of its foreign screens to itself. Imax reserving all of its screens for a single movie for a month is not unprecedented, but it is unusual. The company had a similar deal for the three Hobbit movies, but it struck that pact four years ago and hasn't made that type of commitment since.
In June, Imax broke its own opening-weekend record when Jurassic World leapfrogged over Iron Man 3's $28.8 million to grab $44.2 million worldwide — $21 million from 363 domestic screens and $23.2 million from 443 screens abroad. But Disney's Star Wars could topple that number. It is expected to open on 375 to 400 screens domestically and more than 400 abroad — there's no exact count yet because Imax tends to install and open theaters in the fall. Domestically, Force will play in the commercial chains such as Regal, AMC and Cinemark that house Imax screens as well as most museums and other sites with Imax theaters (which have played space-related Hollywood fare including Gravity and Interstellar). Although he declines to discuss specifics, Imax Entertainment CEO Greg Foster expresses his confidence in the film, saying, "Star Wars: Episode VII is the ultimate crossover movie — it crosses over to everyone." A further factor: Abrams, a fan of the format, has filmed a sequence with Imax cameras to take advantage of the oversized screen.
wonder if i should skip my local theaters Star wars marathon event (all star wars movies at once, including new one) and go to the imax theater nearby
I hope they don't butcher Star Wars with this.

Tough choice, actually. I mean I'd probably have to watch Episode VI again to get myself on who-does-whatnow
I know some place's out there have a VIP area for movie's that let you bring in booze( theater sells still cant bring your in ) with extra leg room and you have people serve you food plus I think it's IMAX as well
I wonder if this will make it easier to see in regular theatres since Imax is still on a "it's the big thing" phase
It's still weird to read "Disney's" and "J.J.Abrams" Star Wars.

Donnie Yen is an actor and Iko Uwais serves as a fight choreographer.
I wish they got Sebastien Foucan too.
If only Sweden had imax.
thats not boastful everything they've shown indicates that it will be at least a great movie
I'm sure the movie's going to be at least pretty decent, but I'm going to get so sick of seeing it and hearing about it everywhere. Like Frozen on steroids

imo the big reason frozen was annoying was because of the songs, i never really saw it near as much as i heard it
90mm is going to be odd.

after the prequels the only thing they can do is help star wars
You know what's really annoying though; while some of the film was shot in IMAX it wasn't shot in 3D, regardless I'm pretty sure they only do 3D showings at IMAX screens if there's the option. So if I want to see the IMAX stuff I have to see a dim 2D>3D converted version.

My local IMAX theater usually doesn't show the 3D version regardless of how it's filmed. Maybe it's because it's a dome theater so 3D effects would look distorted or something.
It's so weird... a new Star Wars coming out. After RotS I was bummed out, annoyed, and figured that was that besides cruddy spinoff and cartoon stuff from here to eternity. I remember clear as day how excited we all were when the Phantom Menace finally came to the local cinemas... good lord was that a crazy time. I think Star Trek Generations was out around the same time? Followed by First Contact, gosh those were exciting days.
I haven't been hyped at all for this new JJ Star Wars, and honestly the trailer for it seemed pretty ehh, but I'm starting to feel that ye olde hype creeping in. Sadly, we don't even have any decent IMAX theaters near me, they all performed miserably and were shut down and converted into other boring uses.
It's going to hell trying to watch this at the local cinemas, ugh.
having good actors and any fight choreography hasn't made it good before
infact, heavily choreographed fight scenes usually make movies terrible. the original series was good because the fights were extensions of the characters emotions and didn't rely on green screen effects to make them interesting.
theres one point in the original series where luke is just wailing on darth vader, and its much more exciting than any of the expensive choreographed fight scenes in the the prequels. the prequels essentially substituted character development for crappy huge transformers-esque fight scenes.
If my theater nearby does show all of them then VII, would it be worth it having to watch Attack of the Clones?

I wish the BFI London took this advice, watching Godzilla on that thing was nauseating.

Only the last 30 or so minutes.
Revenge of the Sith is the only decent film in the prequel trilogy.

Donnie is in Rogue One, not Episode VIII.
As a movie theater employee, I am seriously dreading this Christmas. I will fear waking up for work for an entire month when this movie comes out.

And another fucking Alvin and the Chipmunks, movies that have popularity I can't comprehend.
I think I might just quit when December comes around.

They are cute movies for parents to drag their kids out too. That's the long and short of it.

What versions of the OT are they showing? It could help you decide.

And the Martian. And a the Hunger games a month before.
I'm mostly worried about the trailers for Star Wars. I want to go in unspoiled but come trailer season half the fucking plot is going to be in that trailer like every goddamn movie these days.
