Corrective jaw surgery or orthognathic surgery refers to the surgery of the upper and/or lower jaw to correct bony asymmetry or deficiency or excess. It is a complex and complicated surgery and requires proper and careful planning on both the surgeon part and also the patient part.
Basically going from left before surgery and right after surgery. My jaw is similar to the guy in the middle pictures, except my bottom jaw is maybe a few mm more forward than my front. I'll take pictures when I have the chance to show you. I've been having orthodontic treatment at hospital for almost 4 years. I've had braces for 3.5 years and expected to have them on for another year after. My surgery was meant to be last year, but apparently my teeth "weren't ready" and were at a slight angle, so I had to have two teeth taken out of my top jaw. I've finally been given a date for surgery, Friday 6th August 2010. Next Friday. I'm acting cool about it to my friends and family, but deep down I'm really shitting myself :(
Thats pretty much the same for me, i have a overbite(or underbite, not sure) and my bottom of my jaw grows faster, so they think that i may haveto go and have jaw correction, all i can say is goodluck.

I had a bad underbite but braces corrected that for me. good luck to you
Wow what a change it brought to the 3rd person doing this surgery. Edit: Good Luck!
I know someone who had this done. She was a proper bitch. She is now known as Brace Face.
Thanks. Apparently it's really common, but I've only met one other person who has had it. It's major surgery. I've got 5 weeks off work. If I fall over, or knock my face I could ruin the entire procedure and would have to have more surgery. This dude created a blog about his experiences. Jaw Surgery Blog.com This is a video 1 day after surgery and this is him 1.5 years after.. I'm shitting myself over the swelling :(
The only oral surgery I've had is getting all four of my wisdom teeth cut out of my face. Clearly it's nothing like this, but even just with whatever swelling I had was a bitch. It made my face look like a basketball, hurt to open my mouth, and made it hell to eat anything. Although it wasn't even remotely close for me to take even a single pain pill. I can't fathom why the doctor even prescribed forty to begin with. Still, like with any surgery, it's going to be a pretty rough few weeks. Good luck!
I might have to get a procedure like this, my underbite is getting pretty bad and they're saying it could affect the formation of my teeth. Good luck man, I'm sure you'll be more than glad you got it in a few years.
Heh, and I who have been shitting myself the whole week for some teeth cavity repairs (when they drill your tooth and then fill it). Cavity repairs are a walk in the park in comparison to this. Good luck OP, there isn't really much to do other than repeating to yourself that as soon as it is over you will be extremely happy you did this (which is true, no matter how impossible it feels now).
Wow thats crazy
Seems like a pretty widely done facial correction surgery. I'm sure you have nothing to worry about. You should post some 'Before' pictures in this thread and then some after pictures so we can see what it did. [editline]12:09PM[/editline] Of yourself, I mean.
I'm planning on having upper jaw surgery in December. Due to a complex problem I had as a child (me being stupid and pulling out an adult tooth), one of my top front teeth is fused to the bone. Right now I have braces on which are pulling up the front four teeth to level them, and then the surgeon will cut my top jaw into three sections and pull it forward and down to correct what is now an open bite w/underbite.
I had braces for a few years but they kept messing up, and my dentist kept trying quick fixes. Long story short, had my braces off 4 years ago and I'm still going for regular dental work, and now my top jaw is about 1/4" to the left of center, and yes it's noticable.
I always feel bad for people with giant overbites
When you're in the op room just tell yourself you'll be fine and smile. Trust me, I read up somewhere that smiling releases endorphins (I think it was) that counteract stress.
I've had a similar surgery, although it wasn't corrective jaw surgery. I went to a maxillofacial surgeon to have some teeth that were lodged up inside my jaw removed. Not similar to this, but I will say that the surgeon that I went to was really good at what he did. My 2 cents: Its your decision, but make sure you look at all the options. My surgery was free so there wasn't really any downside to me except missing a day of HW from school.
Nope, luckily not, it looks awful to have a cheek like these.
2nd person is barney
It's normal to have a slight overbite, isn't it? Edit: It is not even an overbite nvm :P
I was actually considered for this, however instead i got a longer (and probably cheaper) treatment, which achieves exactly the same outcome just takes longer. I currently have braces for the treatment and am getting screws into my jaw in a couple weeks. The whole process should take anywhere from a year to two years, however the surgery you will be getting will probably take about 10 weeks. Good luck.
my friend got this recently but they somehow managed to break a nerve in his arm so now he has to wear this thing over his arm that holds up the bottom of his fingers so that he can move his fingers, aside from that, his surgery went great but he has a little speech problem which will go away soon
My orthodontist highly recommended I get this when I was about 13 or 14. He said I had a larger than normal jaw and would probably lead to having a severe underbite and that it was going to be a good idea to go ahead and set it then and there. Fast forward 7 years and I have a perfectly normal bite, I have a stronger jawline than most but I wouldn't change it for the world and I'm really glad I didn't do anything to get it reduced. So if you're 13 or 14 and your orthodontist wants to fuck with your jaw, tell him you'd rather wait and see if you really will develop that socially crippling underbite he promises you'll have. Obviously if you already have a strong underbite/overbite or other maxillofacial issue then go ahead and get it done, but don't get scared into it if you have an otherwise normal jaw and bite.
Yo, Cheers for the support. I've just got back from my final pre-op. I had to have blood tests, x rays and photographs. I had to have 3 swabs for MRSA, one of the swabs was on my groin :3 It was weird. I go in next Friday at 7:30am. I cannot eat, drink, chew or suck from 11:00pm the following night. It's going to kill me. I'll post pictures before, after and then a picture every week after surgery.. and create one of those cool picture slideshows. I'm currently moving house and haven't had time to take photos, but i will. scared :(
lolwut?
Be thankful you don't have an awful receding chin like mine (which I also might need surgery to fix) :frown: Good luck though.
I have an overbite and my teeth were slightly wonky on the top row. I had braces for ~a year and dgaf'd about anything else. Now I have straight teeth and a slight overbite; nothing like that girl in the overbite image.
Good Luck OP! It seems very widely done, I'm sure you'll be fine.
I'm going to get it in a few weeks, my chin is so weird looking right now
i use braces. it doesnt do shit. i would operate my teeth if i could but i got to little money.
Last one looks pretty good after the surgery, horrible before.
