So, I'm looking to get a DSLR for general photography but specifically have a NEED for it to be suitable for product photography. I know very little about cameras so my first thought was to ask you fine people on your opinions. I'm starting my own business so I need to photograph my products well and in high quality (previously done with mobile phone - only option...) and I have no idea where to start.
I know about the kit to help with photography of items (e.g. Light Box and the relevant lighting etc...) but I have no idea what to think of in terms of camera. Was looking at Canon 1200D as based from reviews its a good beginner camera but has some downsides and I don't know of any other people who are photographers beside my friend (whom recommends a Canon 600D, which he uses, but its £500'ish and too high in price for me to consider as im a student). So if you can help me I'd be forever grateful!
no idea where you found the 600D for £500

really, light is 3/4 of this. you will need strobe decent lighting

decent strobe lighting*
anything that shoots Raw and has more than 10 megapickles will be more than enough, as stated above light is the most important part in product photography so invest in proper lights instead of a new high end camera.
Well if you need Macro stuff you'll also have to look for a decent lens but yeah, the body is basically not that much of an issue, don't look for numbers, look for a Menu structure that is comfortable to you and features that you'll need.
Honestly I'd make sure that the camera has a tilt screen, it increases usability in product photography significantly. What types of product photos are you going for? Photos of the product with plain white backgrounds, or photos of the product in a type of setting? Show us what you currently do and we can show you how to make it better
Honestly I could probably build you a decent kit within your budget, but it will be a little unwieldy compared to something more expensive.
After realising the Canon 600D was only £355 i've decided to go with that camera wise (from reviews its an awesome starter camera which is ideal I suppose)
I'm not sure how many/what size SD cards to get though for the camera, I'll be doing static photography in my home but I want to take a load of photos outdoors too when I climb etc... so im not too sure on the sizes/types of SD that are best...
- Going to get a camera bag (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0078MZ72E/ref=ox_sc_act_title_7?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=AUSPG6TJZ4F75)
- Two spare batteries (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003RCYGXK/ref=ox_sc_act_title_6?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2UA3P0T6F2KAT)
- Tripod (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00B1Q5R2S/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE)
and a few other little bits. As for lighting, was thinking of buying this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Continuous-Lighting-50x70cm-Photography-Softboxes/dp/B0089HTJE4) too, any thoughts or opinions on all the stuff I've suggested for myself?
tripod is shit but might get the job done
bag looks like it won't protect your camera much but i don't see anything obviously wrong with it.
lights might be shit but i don't know what else you could get at that price point
What lens would you guys recommend for product photography?
Again depends on the type. Something like a 90mm or 100mm might be too long for APS-C cameras, but in some situations they are ideal.
I think whatever brand you have looking for their around 50mm macro, those are all usually great.
The cosina 100mm f3.5 is excellent on a budget, as is the Tamron 90mm f2.8.

The kit lens is a great option too, very good minimum focusing distance at 30-55mm, and stopping down to f11 to get the deeper DoF will make the photos look very great
Ended up opting for Canon EOS 600D with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II Lens Kit and Canon EF-S 55-250mm F4-5.6 IS II (So I can take long distance outdoor photos too) and upgraded from my initial tripod for the version up from what I posted and a better Lowe Pro 160 AW Bag. Hoping to get the camera and extra lens by Tuesday!
