From the ever classic Red Bull to the new wave of "energy shots," energy drinks are here to last. Energy drinks and supplements may be intimidating to anyone who hasn't tried them before, but have no fear. This guide will provide advice and information to newbies and addicts alike. Section A: A history and introduction. Wikipedia:
Although not marketed as such, the Scottish drink Irn-Bru may be considered the first energy drink, produced as "Iron Brew" in 1901. In Japan, the energy drink dates at least as far back as the early 1960s, with the release of the Lipovitan. Most such products in Japan bear little resemblance to soft drinks, and are sold instead in small brown glass medicine bottles or cans styled to resemble such containers. These "genki drinks", which are also produced in South Korea, marketed primarily to the salaryman set. In UK, Lucozade Energy was originally introduced in 1929 as a hospital drink for "aiding the recovery;" in the early 1980s, it was promoted as an energy drink for "replenishing lost energy." The first drink marketed as being designed to improve the performance of athletes and sports stars arrived in the sixties. It was invented for the football team at the University of Florida, known as the Gators — hence its name, Gatorade. Designed to aid hydration and lengthen performance levels, it claimed that its ingredients were formulated for just such things. In 1985, Jolt Cola was introduced in the United States. Its marketing strategy centered on the drink's caffeine content, billing it as a means to promote wakefulness. The initial slogan was, "All the sugar and twice the caffeine." In 1995, PepsiCo launched Josta, the first energy drink introduced by a major US beverage company (one that had interests outside just energy drinks). In Europe, energy drinks were pioneered by the S. Spitz Company and a product named Power Horse, before the business savvy of Dietrich Mateschitz, an Austrian entrepreneur, ensured his Red Bull product became far better known, and a worldwide best seller. Mateschitz developed Red Bull based on the Thai drink Krating Daeng, itself based on Lipovitan. Red Bull is the dominant brand in the US after its introduction in 1997, with a market share of approximately 47%.[18] By the year 2001, the US energy drink market had grown to nearly 8 million per year in retail sales. Over the next 5 years, it grew an average of over 50% per year, totaling over $3 billion in 2005.[19] Diet energy drinks are growing at nearly twice that rate within the category, as are 16-ounce sized energy drinks. The energy drink market became a $5.4 billion dollar market in 2007, and both Goldman Sachs and Mintel predict that it will hit $10 billion by 2010. Major companies' such as Pepsi, Coca-Cola, Molson, and Labatt have tried to match smaller companies' innovative and different approach, with marginal success. Energy drinks are typically attractive to young people. Approximately 65% percent of its drinkers are between the ages of 13 and 35 years old, with males being approximately 65% of the market.[19] A 2008 statewide Patient Poll conducted by the Pennsylvania Medical Society’s Institute for Good Medicine found that: 20 percent of respondents ages 21–30 had used energy drinks in high school or college to stay awake longer to study or write a paper; 70 percent of respondents knew someone who had used an energy drink to stay awake longer to study or work.[20] Energy drinks are also popular as drink mixers.
Energy drinks can be a scary thing. They have lots of milligrams of chemicals with funny names, and strange looking cans that are way bigger than any soda you have had. Hell, some of them have warnings from the Surgeon General. The first thing you have to do is get past your fear. Energy drinks have a drug-like stigma around them, but that is not the case. Think of energy drinks like your average soda, but with some new ingredients to keep you awake and refreshed. Once you try a few, you'll get what i'm talking about. Section B: Precautions When first trying an energy drink, you will crash. Don't worry however. It's not as bad as the commercials for those energy shots portray it, and it's much shorter than you think. It lasts around 10-15 minutes, and you feel somewhat drowsy and restless. But after your 5th drink or so, your body will build up a tolerance, and the effects will be diminished. Never, ever, drink more than 3 in a day, or more than two energy shots. Don't have an energy shot and an actual energy drink in the same day. Doing so could lead to addiction or caffeine overload. In energy drink addiction, you have so much shit in your body that if you stop drinking them regularly, you go through withdrawal and have a massive crash. C affine overload is the presence of too much caffeine in the body. Caffeine overload begins at levels of 400mg and gets worse from there. Effects and symptoms of caffeine overload include nervousness, irritability, sleeplessness, increased urination, abnormal heart beat rhythms, and stomach upset. To avoid this, wait 5 or so hours before you have your next drink. But like I said, don't be afraid. As long as you drink responsibly, and not get into a Monster chugging contest with a college frat boy, you should be fine. Section C: Popular and recommended drinks. Monster One of the most popular energy drinks. Any convenience store or Walgreen's worth it's salt carries these. In my opinion, however, they have a really bad sour taste and have a really bad balance of ingredients, leading to a really bad crash. Amp Updated For Factual Accuracy Essentially Pepsi's answer to Red Bull. Tastes and acts like a mix between Red Bull and Monster. 24/7 Energy Tastes like Monster, but without the bad mix of ingredients. Do not get this mixed up with the Cherry Berry version, which tastes SO much better with all the benefits. Monster Assault If you want to die from a caffeine overdose, this is how to do it. Has massive amounts of caffeine, taurine, ginseng, and all the other fun stuff. The trade-off is a HUGE crash and lots of carbonation. A good kick if you can handle the crash. Jolt For the sake of comparison, were talking about the Jolt! Cola. Jolt cola is like Coke, but 15 minutes after imbibing, you get what the name says. A massive jolt of energy that doesn't last as long (for me at least,) but while it lasts, your off the walls. Tastes ages better than Red Bull Cola. Red Bull This is great if you want an energy supplement instead of an energy kick. Tastes good, and doesn't have a ton of carbonation. Any and all energy shots "No crash later" is a lie. I have tried one, and I immediately have a massive jolt of energy, my heart was pounding, my palms were sweating, and I had the biggest urge to run around. 30 minutes later, after it has mostly worn off, I literally fall face first into my couch from exhaustion. Only use these if a serial killer is chasing you and you need to run like hell. Bawls :3 Bawls is like sex in a bottle form. It is sweet, with a cream-like taste that tastes awesome. Gives you some good energy too.
Rock Star Rock Star is a great energy drink. It's pretty cheep at some stores. (Here we got em' $1.50 each.) Good balance of stuff, not a bad crash either! Really good for the amateur energy drinkers (it was for me anyways) Energy Drink Break Down This is only drinks that are on the guide in the first post Goes by most common selling ounce. If different (as in monsters XXL size) just add it together. It's simple math. Monster: A 16 ounce can of Monster contains 160 milligrams of caffeine. Amp: An 8.4 ounce can of Amp contains 75 milligrams of caffeine. 24/7 Energy A 16 ounce can of 24:7 Energy contains 160 milligrams of caffeine. Monster Assault: A 16 ounce can of Monster Assault contains 160 milligrams of caffeine. Jolt: A 23.5 ounce can of Jolt Energy contains 280 milligrams of caffeine. A LOT OF CAFFEINE Red Bull: An 8.3 ounce can of Red Bull contains 80 milligrams of caffeine. 5 Hour Energy Unfortunately the manufacturers of 5 Hour Energy are not willing to disclose the levels of caffeine in their product. A guess is 60-100. Rockstar A 16 ounce can of Rockstar contains 160 milligrams of caffeine. Although other flavors have more/less than others. Bawls: A 10 ounce bottle of Bawls contains 66.7 milligrams of caffeine. Full Throttle: A 16 ounce can of Full Throttle contains 144 milligrams of caffeine. V: An 11.85 ounce bottle of V contains 109 milligrams of caffeine. Mother: A 17 ounce bottle of Mother Energy Drink contains 160 milligrams of caffeine. Squirt Citrus Power: An 12 ounce can of Squirt Citrus Power contains 110 milligrams of caffeine. Samedi An 16.9 ounce (500 mL) can of Samedi contains 160 milligrams of caffeine. Vault: An 20 ounce bottle of Vault contains 117.5 milligrams of caffeine. Red Eye: An 11.1 ounce bottle of Red Eye contains 106 milligrams of caffeine. Zu Energy: An 8.4 ounce bottle of Zu Energy contains 77.5 milligrams of caffeine Wild NLG: An 12.6 ounce bottle of Wild NRG contains 120 milligrams of caffeine Buzz Monkey: An 20 ounce bottle of Buzz Monkey contains 257 milligrams of caffeine Power Edge Energy Drink Mix: An 8 ounce cup of Power Edge Energy Drink Mix contains 80 milligrams of caffeine. Relentless: A 16.9 ounce can of Relentless contains 160 milligrams of caffeine.

Full Throttle In my opinion Full Throttle is one of the best energy drinks out there. It has a great taste and is just a powerful as any other energy drink.(144mg of caffeine per 16oz can) There are four types of the energy drink and a coffee form. Great for people who want a soda-like taste in an energy drink.

V V is an Australian energy drink that is one of the most popular over here. It contains about 75mg of caffeine in a small can, 150 in a bottle. It also contains guarana. Mother Mother is another popular Australian energy drink. It was introduced a few years ago to a poor reception due to its awful taste. Some time last year it was re-introduced with a completely different formula. It tastes quite good and contains the maximum level of caffeine legal here, as well as taurine, guarana, ginseng and b vitamins. Its energy hit is second-to-none, in Australia at least, and is often mixed with alcohol.

Cocaine Very powerful energy drink(250mg of caffeine) that was recalled based on the FDA's claim that Cocaine was "illegally marketing their drink as an alternative to street drugs." It has now since reappeared and has a burning cherry flavor.

Samedi Samedi is an Australian energy drink, mostly known for its ridiculous name and desperate marketing strategies. The back of the can has a message about its discovery from the gates of hell and its energy hit that could 'wake the living dead'. Despite this, it's actually quite a good drink. Its energy hit is similar to that of Mother, but it is slightly cheaper and tastes better, kind of like Coke with herbs in it, which is not as bad as it sounds.

Vault Vault is truly the ultimate energy-soda. There are three different varieties of Vault; Citrus, Citrus Zero, and Vault Red Blitz. It has a citrus flavor with 97mg of caffeine per 16oz can. Vault is noteworthy if you want a little bit of a pick-me-up, but not a full energy rush.

RED EYE Another Australian energy drink, this one isn't as popular or as well know as V and Mother. Very fizzy, with about the same amount of caffine per can as V. Also comes in 5 other flavours and bottles. Power: A berry sort of flavour, very nice. Goes down easy. Classic: Haven't been able to get this yet Gold: Once again, unable to locate Passion: Same as Classic and Gold Extreme: Cannot find, but apparently quite nice Platinum: Lemonade style taste, very strong aftertaste. Get some water to wash it down when the aftertaste kicks in. ZU energy A home-brand type energy drink made by coles. Actually not bad for the price, it's around 5.50 for a 4 pack where I live. This flavour, ballistic, tastes a lot like a mix of red bull and mother. The other one, Sublime, tastes like..nothing. Sugar water is the only thing I can think of to describe it. WILD NRG Fucking terrible. Tastes sort of fruity, horrible aftertase. On the plus side it's dirt cheap. That's about all it's got going for it. Also it's the only image I can find that works. Shuddup. BUZZ MONKEY Tastes great, but it's impossible to find where I live. Have only had it once, and I wait for the day I can find it again!

My favorite: Power Edge A small packet that you put into any normal, 16 Oz. water bottle. You take a small sip out of it and pour the contents of the packet in, and shake well. Or take a tall glass, fill it with two cups of water, put the powder in, and stir well. Tastes pretty good, Wild Berry is my favorite, Tangerine-Strawberry is good too. Never tried Lemon-Lime. Has a bit of a sweet taste, and such a slight sour-bitterness to it that I kind of like. It gave me a nice little kick into energy, and is great on slow mornings where you need something to get you started. It has only 10 calories, no fat, no sugar, and 100% of your daily allowance of Vitamin C (Per packet, a serving is only half.). So it's okay for those on a diet (I'm not sure about the sugar replacement.) It has B vitamins, and those are good for energy. Plus it gives the opportunity to make some Powerthirst jokes. FOR PEOPLE WHO NEED GRATUITOUS AMOUNTS OF ENERGY!

The most badass energy drink in the UK. Relentless - 160mg of caffeine, carbonated comes in three different flavours (original, orange and tropical). loaded with sugar and slightly more expensive than rockstar.
Section D: The Crash The first time you have an energy drink or have a ton of them expect a crash. If this is a first time crash, just lay around and you'll be okay. If you just drank 5 Monster Assaults, take these steps to recover faster. - Drink lots of water. The more fluids in your system, the faster your body can flush everything out. - Consider calling the cops in extreme cases. Caffeine overdose is a serious threat. If you experience abnormal heart rhythms, call 911 immediately. - Do something that requires mental alertness, like puzzles. Doing so can stimulate your brain and help you recover. - Exercise. Section E: Conclusions I hope this article has helped you overcome your fears or questions about energy drinks. Now that you have the knowledge, you can enter a whole new level of alertness and wakefulness. Feel free to make an addition to the guide (adding energy drinks, tips, etc.)
I personally get little to no energy from energy drinks, but I still crash.
I love energy drinks, expecialy monster, nice ass shots.
NOS. You forgot it.
PowerThirst?
Fucking Red Bull Cola is terrible. Red Bull I've build a tolerance for it's Horse Piss flavor, and I have one about once a morning.
Needs a section on Bonk!
Can someone tell me if this is normal I drink three monsters to get hyper, yet only need half of one to stay awake a whole night. 100-200 mg of caffeine is not enough for me, I need at least 400mg.
Were you at all a hyperactive child in your younger days?
Somewhat. I exercised often, talked so fast I often had to repeat myself twice to get the message across(i still do), and always started laughing randomly at random shit.
I have never had an energy drink before. I hardly drink coffee. They just aren't healthy at all.
Somewhat. I exercised often, talked so fast I often had to repeat myself twice to get the message across(i still do), and always started laughing randomly at random shit.
Do you happen to have ADD? BTW, I get natural energy, from apples 'n' stuff.
I tried AMP and it was pretty tasty.
I remember last year drinking two monster assaults before school to stay awake in my classes then after school passing out lol
what about bawls
Do you happen to have ADD? BTW, I get natural energy, from apples 'n' stuff.
Some people say ADD doesn't exist, but yes, I was classified at a young age with severe ADD. I would even say 100-200mg caffeine doses make me calm.
Can someone tell me if this is normal I drink three monsters to get hyper, yet only need half of one to stay awake a whole night. 100-200 mg of caffeine is not enough for me, I need at least 400mg.
No. You shouldn't be drinking to get hyper.
How about cocaine?
Energy drinks are gross.
Please, feel free to make an addition to the guide. I will be happy to put them in the OP.
Okay... Runnin’ rings around all them molasses-slow dummies out there on the battle- field is thirsty frickin’ work. But when it comes to quenchin’ that thirst, only one thermonuclear thirst detonator packs all the “Atomic Punch” you’ll ever need. Bonk! is fulla radiation, which as we all know is pretty great for givin’ people superpowers. Just one can’ll blast ya into a few-second rush of radioactive energy so powerful you’ll be dodgin’ bullets like they ain’t even there! [tab]Note: Bonk! contains several hundred times the daily recommended allowance of sugar. After the beneficial effects of the radiation wear off, drinkers have reported experiencing feelings of lethargy that can last several seconds. Reading this sentence absolves Bonk! of any liability for killing sprees inspired by or deaths resulting from the ingestion of Bonk! Enjoy Bonk! responsibly… Or by the case![/tab]
Can you really buy Bonk!?
