Could anyone touch up this photograph of my girlfriend with her late grandfather?

Just wondering if anyone could touch up this photo at all. I tried myself and failed miserably. I want to get it framed, and give it to her as a gift. Any help would be appreciated!

Is there a higher-res scan without the horrible compression?
Do you have a higher quality copy?
You can pay people professionally to do this, I'm currently commissioned by someone to restore an old photo of theirs from their childhood. Faded from being on the wall.
Unfortunately I don't have a better quality scan at the moment. I'll try and get one and post it later.

I think it was cropped when it was uploaded. I guess that's what made it so horribly compressed.
Post a higher scan if you can and upload it to minus.com instead. I'm pretty good at retouching old photographs, I'll give it a try, but let me know whether you can upload a higher quality scan or if you just want me to use what you have now.

I'll upload a better quality scan in an hour or so, if you'd be so kind to check the thread again.

That's very low resolution though

Don't size it down, the file you should come out with shouldn't fit on the computer screen at full size.
Yeah leave the DPI at 200-300 or so and don't resize it.
It seems that the minus site sized it down. Here it is on imgur: http://i.imgur.com/kBSWDWf.jpg
I'll give it a go.

Either your scanner is a bit silly, or imgur likes to jpeg compress things a lot.
Well, anyways, because of the large amount of jpeg compression, this was the best I could do:

And it's really not very different from your attempt.

Yeah imgur does pretty heavy jpg compression

What site do you recommend I upload it too?

first time doing something like this. I guess I didnt do the colors right, your attempt looks a bit more realistic
upload it to puush or localhostr or dropbox where it won't be compressed
finally, uploaded to dropbox http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1004506/anything.jpeg If that doesn't work, then it's obviously just a problem with the scanner.

Yep, still compressed. Use different scanner settings.
Well it's a bit better now haha. Is that the highest quality your scan can work at? If you really need this picture for something important (to print it out or something for a memorial) you could mail me the picture and I'll get a high quality scan done and then work from that. I could even print it out for you and mail it back with the original. If you just want a digital copy I could probably just work with this I guess, but the size will be small. What's the size of the original picture?
For example here's a relatively small 5"x3.5" picture I scanned (unedited)

Looks like Bill Murray kind of
touch up...
