Barack Obama waded into the French presidential race Thursday, releasing a video expressing his support for Emmanuel Macron — a centrist who is battling far-right nationalist Marine Le Pen.
"The success of France matters to the entire world," the former president said in a video posted online and tweeted by the Macron's campaign. The candidate "appeals to people's hopes and not their fears," Obama added.
Macron, an ex-investment banker, economy minister and advocate of a free market is up against Le Pen, who's running a strident "French-first," anti-globalization campaign.
The race is broadly seen as a litmus test for the strength of liberal values in the face of populist, economic protectionist movements such as Le Pen's National Front.
He's actually incredibly popular in France, so this is a good thing. 84% of French people said that they were confident that Obama would do the right thing in regards to world affairs near the end of his presidency.
I don't really feel any foreign politician (or ex) should "throw support" for the candidate in another's election.
Imagine how people would feel if Putin openly endorsed Donald Trump for president

Difference is, Obama and Macron are decent human beings.
"appeals to people hope's and not their fear"
what about the 60% of his voters on the 1st turn who voted for him to block Fillon & Le Pen
his whole campaign is based on the fear of those two, but at least it's not the fear of foreigners.

I don't care if Putin openly endorses Donald, I only care if he's effecting the political climate through covert means. It's not like Putin has a big fanbase in America anyway, in fact if he did publicly endorse Donald like Obama did you'd probably have a lot of old school people asking "Why the fuck do the Russians like Donald Trump?" which would hurt his image more than help it.
It's a completely different situation in France.

I don't think he'll really "endorse" anyone, but he'll speak positively of Macron. Putin did basically the same thing - he was very cautious and PC when discussing the election in the media. He called Trump "colorful/lively/flamboyant" and that got mistranslated as "brilliant," which Trump repeated ad nauseam. He clearly showed favor towards Trump, because Trump wanted to "fix" US/Russia relations, and was much colder on Hillary, saying that "she probably has her own idea" on US/Russia relations.
The media will run with "throwing weight behind" or "endorsing" even if it isn't anything official. Foreign leaders pretty regularly comment on foreign elections, especially controversial ones like France and the 2016 US election, because the media will ask them to comment. But I'd be very surprised if he goes and campaigns for Macron. Speaking positively, sure, because France loves him and he knows he can influence shit. And there's nothing wrong with that, because a private citizen speaking his mind on a foreign election is guaranteed free speech. There's nothing wrong with using prestige to influence elections. Actors (fail to) do it all the time. There's something wrong when it involves intel operations and hacking, though, which America and Russia love to do.
So guy who gives talks to wall street for millions and gave them special treatment when he was in office himself backs ex-banker in overseas election?
By no means do I support Le Pen but Macron seems like a really mediocre candidate.

Dodd-Frank was a step in the right direction when it came to financial regulation. Glass-Steagall 2.0 would've been better, but I'll take what I can get.
When the political battlefield is centrist neoliberals versus far-right fascists and borderline an-caps, with the social democrats sidelining in the corner, I won't complain too much about Obama. We traded him for someone even friendlier with Wall Street.

Well.. that's kinda the thing though, it's either Macron or Le Pen.

Honestly it's different if he does it openly. At least for me what makes Putin's alleged fuckery with the American election so despicable and horrifying is the secretly manipulating shit part, not preferring one candidate over the other.
i think obama making a statement means macron and the politicians around the world hoping he'll win are desperate.
macron's offshore bank docs just leaked and french authorities aren't handling it very well.

You mean the bullshit /pol/ documents that say in plain text "EMMANUEL MACRON" as if using his actual name on a secret bank account is something an ex banker would do for some reason?
Not sure what you're referring to about "French authorities not handling it very well", the only thing I see about it is press articles that simply say it's a hoax.
[editline]5th May 2017[/editline]
He even went up two points after the ridiculous debate he had with MLP last Wednesday. If there's anyone who's desperate here it's not Macron supporters.

yeah i dont know if its pol or not, but i'm talking about the documents leaked on mixtape. french authorities emailed the website owner to tell him 1. the documents are definitely fake, 2. take them down right now, and 3. tell us literally every person that downloaded those documents
i think a lot of what's happening in france is mirroring what happened here in the states during our election. it's my opinion that if we were to compare notes between the past and the present we're dealing with feelings of desperation. and at a much faster rate. we're even way past the "russia hacked french polls" reports.

You got an actual source on that?

I'm unsure what you're even trying to say, but I don't see where the accusations against the FN of hacking or manipulating the polls are. I just don't see where that so-called desperation is. Where do you see all that?
You got an actual source on that?
from the owner's twitter. also yeah you're right, he says they're from /pol/, but i don't know if that completely eliminates validity. here you go:

Have you actually read the mail?
Nothing in here claims the documents are fake, demands a takedown or asks for the uploader's/downloader's name.
They're literally just contacting them for legal formalities, which makes sense considering there's a defamation suit in progress.

Latest French piece of news I can find about this topic dates back to February. That's hardly conspirationist psychosis and not at all a topic of interest in French news currently.

looks like they're accusing him of distributing fake documents with the intention of influencing the election.
Also his twitter feed is hell to go thru I underestimated how many le pen supporters there are. Alt right amongst young people is a real problem.
