Wolfenstein 3D (with Spear of Destiny) is widely considered to be the first true 3D FPS ever. It single handedly kickstarted a generation of id Software greats, and thus influenced just about every FPS we've played ever since. Its mazes, shades of gray, and blue hues are burned into the collective gaming memory - plus you get to kill a mechanized Hitler. Classic.
In the early days of FPS gaming, Quake II: Quad Damage was the milestone. In a spot-on review from 1997, GameSpot calls it "the only first-person shooter to render the original Quake entirely obsolete." It was bigger, better, prettier, and smoother than any clone or predecessor - it also offered one of the most playable, and by far most popular multiplayer experiences of its day.
Quake III: Gold, aka. multiplayer revolution. Despite a controversial removal of the lauded single-player experience the series was known for, Quake III: Arena became a smash-hit and (together with Unreal Tournament) essentially defined arena-style, movement-based competitive gaming for years. The shooter spawned a community that's been living and breathing to this day.
In B.J. Blazkowicz's Return to Castle Wolfenstein, another legend is born. A unique, objective-based multiplayer mode saw immense popularity back in the day - and it was actually pretty okay if you're into that sort of thing. The single-player campaign is a dark, somewhat ridiculous freak show of morbid, scientific fantasy. An ever present sense of dread emanates from the disturbing experiments and cult-like universe, just waiting to be set afire - by you.
As with any Bethesda purchase, you'll also get The Elder Scrolls: Arena & Daggerfall for free!
Prepare to fight in Quake II: Quad Damage, Quake III: Gold, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Wolfenstein 3D and Spear of Destiny - now DRM-free on GOG.com. Return to the FPS immortals at 33% off in two bundles: Quake Damage & Return to Wolfenstein. The promo will last for one week, until October 8, 12:59 PM GMT.
The four titles released today are not available for purchase in Germany. These are legal restrictions that are beyond our control, and we're very sorry for the inconvenience.
20 bux for Quake II and Q3A is too damn much for such old games. Thanks, but no, thanks.
I played quake 2 for the first time on playstation 1 when I was younger. Didn't even know it was a port then.
Time to play the real thing!
While the Netpack sounds kinda cool, I already have these on Steam.
And I still don't know how to play Quake 2 online.
If they eventually get Linux port of RTCW in there, I gonna buy it. The port exists since 2002 but isn't on Steam or anywhere.
20 is a bit much for both Quake 2 and 3, and it sure as hell is way too much for just Quake 3, I would've thought they would bring in a much lower price to draw in the nostalgia crowd who'd want a DRM free version on modern systems.
Aren't these all on steam for cheaper? Could've sworn I have all the old Wolfenstein and Quake games from a cheap quakecon bundle a few years back.
Too bad I own and have beat all these games already.
For all of y'all who were hoping to grab the soundtrack off of these, it's not offered off of GOG itself like a lot of other games. You can, however, find the soundtrack for Quake II in .ogg format in a "music" folder in the game directory.
This is not the case for Quake III, unless you know how to prowl through a .pak file, I imagine. The launcher for Quake II is also one of the best bits.

Didn't Wolfenstein 3D use to be free?
RTCW is so fucking good. Just wish the multiplayer was still up. It looks like a lot of fun.
If you're talking about the shareware version, yes it still is.
Funny how that works. Shareware gave you the full first episodes of Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake, and there was that Shareware demo of Quake II as well I believe. Nowadays if you were to get a demo of Wolfenstein 3D on consoles or a 'free trial' on a phone, all you'd get is E1M1 and nothing else.
I thought Quake 2 was released for free by ID themselves, thus making it impossible to illegally obtain the game which makes paying money for the game kinda pointless.
Like, I could post the widescreen fix and soundtrack fix version of the game I've got sitting in my dropbox right now and it'd be totally fine.

Eraser Bot built in the launcher? That makes it instantly worth the $20!

I think they only released the source code and not the game itself.

Pretty sweet launcher, I must say.
Some time ago they had Quake (1st one) for sale, and after doing some research on the forums, it didn't include the soundtrack... must be something with NIN and the rights to the music.
A massive dissapointment. :/
RTCW is so fucking good. Just wish the multiplayer was still up. It looks like a lot of fun.
It's not up? When did it go down?
Just get SWAT 4 and we're all set
I honestly found Return to Castle Wolfenstein a bit boring, it's not a game for everyone. Wolfenstein 3D is also pretty dull, but it's kinda interesting to see how these games evolved either way.
Only buy them if you really like FPS games.
It's a weird and a depressing feeling when looking at AQ2 servers.
Seeing my fellow Finnish lost-souls still going at it, even at this late hour. Endlessly, like bound in Hell.

And so is the full version too...

Oh wow...
20 bux for Quake II and Q3A is too damn much for such old games. Thanks, but no, thanks.
I'd compare that to Steam. After all, GOG ones offer with expansions on it. So if you aim to get the main game AND the expansions at the same time. I'd recommend to get it from them rather than Steam, unless you feel like paying 60 EU/$ at Steam rather than 27 EU/30 $.
It's pretty damn cheap at GOG if you ask me.
Aaah, Quake III. Purest of all.

Agreed, I bought the entire Quake series on Steam for less than $10 a long time ago.
Forgot to mention one more thing. GOG's Quake 2 launcher is fully customizeable by editing the Q2Launcher.ini file. You can pretty much add mods, divide em into groups and point out the EXE file you want to use. Supports launch options as well.
The fullest version that's legally available for free is the 20th anniversary web release:
http://3d.wolfenstein.com/game_NA.php
And that only includes Episodes 1-3.
Except that they made the source code free so some people ported it to things like ZDoom.
Didn't Wolfenstein 3D use to be free?
it still is, but this version isn't because they've ported it to run on modern stuff, you can still get the old one to run if you fiddle around in dosbox though

Quake 3 is good, but I'm really glad QL nerfed the 100dmg rail.
