Published November 08, 2012 | BGR
The best-selling smartphone in the world is no longer an iPhone. New data released on Thursday by market research firm Strategy Analytics finds that Samsung’s Galaxy S III was the world’s top-selling smartphone model in the third quarter this year, displacing Apple’s iPhone for the first time in years. Samsung announced earlier this week that cumulative Galaxy S III channel sales reached the 30 million unit milestone and according to Strategy Analytics, 18 million of those were shipped in Q3 2012. During the same period, Apple shipped an estimated 16.2 million iPhone 4S handsets, slipping into the No.2 spot for the quarter. [pullquote] “Samsung’s Galaxy S3 smartphone model shipped 18 million units worldwide during the third quarter of 2012,” said Strategy Analytics analyst Neil Shah. “The Galaxy S3 captured an impressive 11 percent share of all smartphones shipped globally and it has become the world’s best-selling smartphone model for the first time ever." "A large touchscreen design, extensive distribution across dozens of countries, and generous operator subsidies have been among the main causes of the Galaxy S3’s success. Apple shipped an estimated 16.2 million iPhone 4S units worldwide for second place, as consumers temporarily held off purchases in anticipation of a widely expected iPhone 5 upgrade at the end of the quarter,” Shah said. Samsung’s time at the top will be short-lived however, as Apple’s iPhone 5 is expected to regain the title to top-selling smartphone in the December quarter. "Samsung’s Galaxy S3 has proven wildly popular with consumers and operators across North America, Europe and Asia,” Shah’s colleague Neil Mawtson stated. “However, the Galaxy S3’s position as the world’s best-selling smartphone model is likely to be short-lived." "The Apple iPhone 5 has gotten off to a solid start already with an estimated 6 million units shipped globally during Q3 2012. We expect the new iPhone 5 to out-ship Samsung’s Galaxy S3 in the coming fourth quarter of 2012 and Apple should soon reclaim the title of the world’s most popular smartphone model.”
http://www.foxnews.com/tech/2012/11/08/iphone-no-longer-world-best-selling-smartphone/
well i mean we all knew it was coming it was the first smartphone that wasn't niche as all hell and there's no shortage of competition
Well other phones are starting to appeal to people who like iDevices I was stuck in the middle of getting an iPhone or a Windows Phone, I chose the Windows Phone and I'm yet to regret that decision.
I know lime 2 people who actuallu bothered getting an iPhone 5. They just didn't do enough to warrant more sales.

Hopefully now they'll be room for innovation, instead of Apple just pumping out the same product in different sizes and speeds

After Steve Jobs died, this company seemed to lose a little piece of it's edge in the market.
Not only the iPhone 5, nobody in my town actually knew that the new iPod touch came out. Maybe one person I know has it.
What's the big deal with windows phone that's made it so popular all of a sudden? I've been really attracted to the prospect of developing for it (it seems way nicer than programming for android and anything is better than programming for iOS) but aside from that I actually don't know much about it

If only Google had waited longer and bought webOS instead, another better Linux based mobile OS. Even Android 4.2 is still at it's core, a polished turd. Basically all the people who defend Android are just Google fanboys defending the Google labeling, even though it's not originally a Google project (and it shows too, Google is perhaps the best tech company out there, does Android reflect this quality that most of their other products have? Nope.)

Just look at Windows Phone, it runs great on shit-tier phones, Android runs horribly on even some decent phones. It's also unoptimized as fuck (worse battery life) and the only reason why Android is the dominant mobile OS is because it ships on McDonalds-tier phones in 2nd and 3rd world countries
you're being a very naughty sandwich!
You have to admit whilst the iPhone is a great device, the iOS lacks a huge change compared to the older iterations of iOS (other than performance wise). People using the phone since the first few generations (like me) just want something new to play with. That's why I have decided to purchase the Google Nexus 4. Change is good.
That is why you get a flagship phone like the S3 or use custom ROMS
that fact that people justify this huge problem is really, really sad
What's the big deal with windows phone that's made it so popular all of a sudden? I've been really attracted to the prospect of developing for it (it seems way nicer than programming for android and anything is better than programming for iOS) but aside from that I actually don't know much about it
Because to me it's clean, fast and responsive. The UI is amazing and just suits what I need, here's some screenshots of my phone lockscreen: [t]http://i.imgur.com/9gPGV.jpg[/t] start: [t]http://i.imgur.com/jCyFE.jpg[/t] To me this is fast, I get all my information in an instant and I know what's happening. If I have notifications on FB they come through the me tab so I know what's going on, also the dynamics of pinning make it better. My android phone was really not responsive and shit, it was a low tier but other low tier phones such as the Lumia 610 or 510 run pretty good and you get a lot of bang out of your buck. This is the 800 however
Well, you have to wonder why?
Well, you have to wonder why?
better performance...rofl the iPhone 5 dual core cpu outperformed the quadcore on the SIII, because of good optimization. Granted it's not like performance matters on android because most of the demanding games that use engines like unreal engine 3 aren't on android (ie: Infinity Blade)
Karma's a bitch huh Apple
After Steve Jobs died, this company seemed to lose a little piece of it's edge in the market.
Less inovation More repetitive products More lawsuits Are we watching the slow downfall of Apple? Steve climbed to the top, keeping the company there for a few years, and now they are slowly falling down, filling lawsuits to keep on pumping a few more dollar bills... Is that it?
umm both platforms have graphically demanding games
both don't have ones that matter
both don't have ones that matter
because 80% of game developers try too hard to bring the console experience to the mobile phone market games like infinity blade are perfectly fun, good looking and not unnatural
because 80% of game developers try too hard to bring the console experience to the mobile phone market games like infinity blade are perfectly fun, good looking and not unnatural
well my point is allot of developers shun Android because of its problems, like how the Battleheart (whatever that rpg that was popular) stopped developing the Android version and giving more updates because Android is poor. Google can do better, but the Google loyalists just take it WHY? They always accuse iOS owners of sucking Apple's cock but at least Apple's platform actually delivers, and actually gets top quality dev support. Android is being treated by app developers in a similar fashion that many companies treat PC gamers.

Developing and dubugging on iOS devices is just more comfortable and easy.
