Mass Effect 2 has won the ultimate game of the year at this year's Golden Joystick awards.
Other winners at the gaming industry's biggest event include popular titles such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Final Fantasy XIII.
Mass Effect 2 also won role-playing game (RGP) of the year with tower defence game Plants vs. Zombies also taking home two prizes.
The winners are voted for by UK fans and the event is now in its 28th year.
Spread across 16 categories, other winners at this year's Golden Joysticks included Assassin's Creed II (action game), FIFA 10 (sports game) with Call of Duty: Black Ops bagging the 'one to watch' prize.
Racing game of the year went to Forza Motorsport 3, Super Street Fighter 4 won the fighting game award and Guitar Hero 5 was voted music game of the year.
The portable game prize went to Pokemon Heart Gold/ Soul Silver, League of Legends picked up online game of the year and World of Goo was voted puzzle game of the year.
Cambridge-based firm Jagex, behind titles such as online multiplayer RuneScape and strategy game War of Legends, picked up the UK developer of the year prize.
The Golden Joysticks began in 1982 with Jetpac winning the first ultimate game of the year, an award handed out by former Radio 1 DJ Dave Lee Travis.
Other winners have included video game classics such as Fallout 3, Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Grand Theft Auto.
Last year the Golden Joysticks made it into the Guinness Record Books as the world's most popular video game awards.
To qualify for an award games had to be released between May 2009 and May 2010, except for the 'one to watch'.
This year more than 1.5 million votes were cast with the awards hosted by US comedian Rich Hall at London's Park Plaza Westminster Bridge hotel.

-Congratulations to Mass effect 2 as a worthy winner of game of the year 2010
Honestly, It deserved to win.
Fuck yeah mass effect <3

This. I loved ME2, and have played through it several times. I can't really think of any other games released in recent years in which I've played through as many times as I did with ME2.
Bring on the 3rd! Can't wait for the finale.
Nice to see a good game get GoTY.
I don't know about GOTY for me, but it's on that list for sure.
The soon-to-be Mass Effect Trilogy will be like the Starwars of video games.

The old ones or the new ones?

Hmmmmmm
Old ones obviously :v:

Bingo, boy-o
Mass Effect is great, I've seen parts of an LP of the first and second game but I still have the first game to complete myself.
For once, I agree with the verdict. I've never had a game make my care so much about its characters. In the final mission, the tension was almost palpable.
Yes.
I remember my first play through,[sp]My favorite characters; Jack, Thane, and Garrus all died as well as a few others from the team who I enjoyed having around[/sp].
For the first time in a long time, despite actually beating the main story and being a "hero" and all, I actually felt bad by the outcome and my actions, like I failed the mission and my team.
Repeating from my previous post in here, I can't recall any other game in recent years to have this impact on me.
Deserved it. I hope they improve the character creation in the next game, since it always made my character look like an angry mexican rapist.
MW2 fanboys gonna be mad?
Golden joysticks is dumb, Jagex won UK game dev of the year, what tomfoolery is this?
MW2 fanboys gonna be mad?
I doubt it, MW2 already won it once. Actually I imagine they'll still say it's shit because it isn't as realistic or fast paced or whatever as MW2. Although Jagex UK dev of the year what the fuck.
I wanted to start another new character on ME2 yesterday, put in disc 1 and started it off, got past the bit where the normady blows up and got to the cut scene where shepard is getting rebuilt.
And it froze every time :smithicide:
I almost broke down in tears.
Cool I guess
Mordin for Character of the Year

There wasn't that many other choices though for UK devs.
What's with the dumb? I went "What the hell?" when placing my vote. I just randomly chose another dev other than Jagex.
MW2 fanboys gonna be mad?
MW2 fanboys are always gonna be mad. They're MW2 fanboys.
That's cool. ME2 deserves it.
well I didn't play 2 but 1 was pretty awesome
If it was like the first then that's a good choice for best game
I don't get it, what's with all the bad games getting awards?
Oh wait, I see they have a system in place wherein votes are tallied and the games with the most votes out of each category win, so that explains why so many bad but popular games have won.
Kind of stupid really, allowing games to win just because a large amount of people voted for them, and not for the games themselves actual merits. I mean come on now, Call of Duty Black Ops as the one to watch out for? It's common knowledge what it's going to be like, it's going to be JUST like the other entries into the series, so what's there to look out for? Seriously, wouldn't it be more fitting of a game like say, The Witcher 2, Dead State or perhaps even Minecraft to get that award?
And even more so, Mass Effect 2 winning an award meant for games of the RPG genre is probably one of the worst jokes I've ever had the displeasure to encounter, although I can understand why it won, other than New Vegas, there hasn't been any other notable RPGs out this year at all. Victory by lack of competitors.
bioware use the same characters in all their games.
Good choice for once.
I thought that they were too busy to receive the award.
Calibrating.
I thought Batman: Arkham Asylum was a pretty good game. Did that win anything?
Also, Fagex got UK dev of the year? I just lost all faith in humanity.
I'm so glad that MW2 didn't get it this year. Not because of the major :bandwagon: hate on the game, but other games are much more deserving.
