Investigative filmmaker James O’Keefe donned an Osama bin Laden mask and sneaked across the Rio Grande in his new media stunt meant to expose the vulnerabilities of the U.S.-Mexico border.
“I’m at the Rio Grande river. I’m about to cross into the United States just likes thousands of illegal immigrants do every single year,” Mr. O’Keefe, of Project Veritas, says in the video released Monday.
He is seen wading up to his shins across the 20-foot wide river from Mexico into Hudspeth County, Texas — this time wearing a white button-down shirt and slacks.
“I don’t see a single federal officer anywhere,” he says after easily crossing. “No walls, no guns, no people. Totally peaceful, quiet and serene. I’m in the United States. And let me tell you something, if the president or if [Nevada Sen. Harry] Reid or anyone else tries to tell you that our borders are secure, they are lying to you. Because that was just about the easiest thing I ever did. It may be difficult to get from South America to that point, but crossing that river? No problem.”
Mr. O’Keefe even points out an old foot bridge in case “you don’t want to get your feet wet.” He then proceeds to take the six-mile walk to Interstate 10, which he reaches without a hitch.
“From here I can get anywhere in the United States,” he says before going back to try the stunt again, this time as the world’s most infamous terrorist.
“I see no border patrol. I see no security. Thousands of people have stood in my footsteps right now. They’ve come from South America, Honduras, Guatemala, and they’ve all crossed the border. And if they can cross, anybody can cross,” says Mr. O’Keefe, dressed in military fatigues and a plastic bin Laden mask and turban. He makes the trip again unfettered.
“If you think four strands of barbed wire is securing the border then I guess it’s secure,” Hudspeth County Sheriff Arvin West says in the video. “You hear the rumors of boots on the ground and more agents. We got plenty of agents, they just need to be on the border. Look around you. You look miles and miles in either direction and there is not a border patrol agent.”
I, i dont know what to say..
Nobody seems to be able to do anything productive with the border.
Social welfare systems are overwhelmed by the poor and illegal, and our schools close to the border are bursting at the seams with students who are very poor in English skills or do not understand English at all. How will they be taught?
Meanwhile in Canada...
and our schools close to the border are bursting at the seams with students who are very poor in English skills or do not understand English at all. How will they be taught?
don't let them (assuming they're not legal) go into public school in the first place
don't let them (assuming they're not legal) go into public school in the first place
Unfortunately, that'll only worse the communities that have them as with growing up without an education will lead to extreme poverty and increase crime.
comparing poverty stricken immigrants to osama bin laden?
what a publicity stunt
This is a problem America caused onto itself by shipping gangs like MS-13 and MS-18 down to South America. These gangs built Drug Cartels and these cartels shit on everybody's day down there.
Unfortunately, that'll only worse the communities that have them as with growing up without an education will lead to extreme poverty and increase crime.
they won't get an education anyway, if they don't know english, and will most likely drop out anyway
they won't get an education anyway, if they don't know english, and will most likely drop out anyway
Well the first thing that should be done is teach them to speak English well and educate them on American history and culture.

I took it as "look, our borders are so unsafe a terrorist can get through".
comparing poverty stricken immigrants to osama bin laden?

its a statement not a comparison
find something else to be offended about
its a statement not a comparison

not offended
but it's a nice way to lump osama in with "that lot" that some of your politicians are shitting their pants at
this is just my opinion from what i can see from the article and the wording etc. don't get mad
like it's an effective way for those who are influenced easily by articles like this to assume that all immigrants are terrorists
(talking about the article and the wording ok, not the actual issues)

Teach them English..
Why not work towards making Mexico and South America better so people won't need to go to the states.
You mean all the dictators we installed didn't improve the region?
Investigative filmmaker
Ahahaha. No.
He probably wasn't even at the Rio Grande. All of his stupid gotcha stunt videos have been discredited as selectively edited bullshit. But, he keeps making them, because he's not a journalist, he's a Republican-funded propagandist.
Really fucking sick of my fellow conservatives trying to push this message that we should drop our own and act like they deserve it.
Does it somewhat irritate me that people come illegally? Yes, but it's not directed at the people, but rather the fucking systems in place that force people to pay up to 15,000 USD to drug cartels and Coyotes to get over the bloody border instead of just going legally. Or the case of right now how people want to drop the public education for some of these kids so that they might be able to create a life for their families over here, and become hardworking and productive individuals, away from Coyote help.
That not only going to effect those kids, it'll effect us. We'll have more homeless folk on the streets, as well as people who are unable to pay for any burden they may put on the system. Our mingling with them not being allowed in the public school system will directly put burden onto the welfare system, as well as central public aid systems.
Seriously, I swear I am going to make a Capitalist Party of North Dakota one of these days. People need to go with the money in their sights, and with a sense of hope in their hearts.

Contrary to popular belief, illegal immigrants pay more into the system than other people in their income levels. Here is why:
1) In order to maintain the appearance of a functional business, many employers will still withhold state and federal taxes from wages intended for undocumented workers.
2) lacking the necessary documents to actually file taxes, and despite often ultimately making too little to pay tax anyhow, the workers are unable to file taxes and reclaim those lost funds.
3) similarly, lacking things like a social security number, the are unable to effectively collect on any assistance programs like food stamps or welfare.
4) being that they are undocumented, encounters will law enforcement are not desirable, so they make basically zero use of any emergency response systems.
5) sales tax, obviously, also still applies to them.
Generally speaking, undocumented workers probably contribute more than you do.

Open elementary schools that are conducted in Spanish. They will learn English like any other foreign language and they will learn the other core subjects in a language they can understand. By the time they hit middle school they should be set to learn stuff in English easily.

I know several university students that are the children of illegal immigrants. Try again.
why do they sell osama bin laden masks
don't let them (assuming they're not legal) go into public school in the first place
What else are they supposed to do? You don't teach them they'll get self taught. And, chances are, if they're illegal they're A: broke as fuck B: living in the ghetto C: Exposed to street crime and gangs on a daily basis. It's a no brainer what they'll turn to, and already do in droves anyway. It's part of why we have such a bad gang problem in those areas in the first place.
why do they sell osama bin laden masks
So that the Bin Laden mask wearers and the Tony Blair mask wearers can roleplay together
I'm no expert on national security, but weren't all of the 9/11 perpetrating terrorists legally in the U.S. attending things like work, colleges, and flight schools for months/years?
This whole, "We gotta secure the border because of terrorists" thing really sounds like bullshit. If I'm not mistaken statistically most terrorists were either U.S. born citizens (most of them not Middle Eastern as well), or foreigners with legal means of staying here.
Sure, argue that the border is undefended against lone people walking across it, but comparing Mexican immigrants to terrorists or insinuating that it's a valid threat seems like a bullshit way to justify erecting a giant wall instead of constructively dealing with the economic and political situation in the U.S. and South/Central America, which is in many ways an extension of our own past foreign policy anyway.
imagine if the border militia had shot him
In what world does James O'Keefe get to be referred to as an "investigative journalist"? The dude was caught red-handed lying twice about two different stories. The Washington Times should be embarrassed.

Sounds like the perfect environment to turn to crime in desperation.

English is overwhelmingly the primary language of the US. Teach them English first.
Or.. or.. we can do the non shitty thing, and let them go to school, and actually make it possible for your average joe to become a citizen of the US. It's not like we can say "WE'RE FULL, GO HOME". We're nowhere near full, and our economy can easily accommodate more people.
As is now, it's next to impossible to become a citizen in the first place for anyone who isn't a doctor or engineer. That being said, you're not doing them any favors by denying them an education, all that's going to do is cause more and more issues down the road, creating an entire cast of people who are told "you're going to remain uneducated, for your entire life, because you're not from this country".
Yeah, the boat isn't fully sunk yet. We can fit a few more people before it fully sinks.....

I'd rather we just kick them out if they're discovered to be illegal. Let their home country take them back.
Seriously, we got our own problems to take care of, why do we need to add strain to a situation that's already a clusterfuck.
Considering the economy expands the more people contribute to it.. The economy didn't collapse in the 1900's when we had a huge surge of immigrants from Ireland; it didn't collapse in the 1800's when we had a huge surge of immigrants from china/korea, it's not going to collapse if we have a huge surge of immigrants in 2014.
But I agree, we should totally close the borders. I enjoy spending 16$ on a head of lettuce.
I think you're looking at the big picture too much. Yes, the American government as a whole won't be hurt and may even improve.
But the local economies where immigrants flood take a terrible tool on infrastructure and the education system.
OR.. or... we can stop listening to the news that's specifically designed to breed tension between the races, realize that the only reason we're in a clusterfuck is because we let ourselves get that way, because it was easier to keep up with the kardashians than it was to keep up with the lies the politicians were saying, and take care of our fellow man.
I'm reading a lot of buzzwords and vague points in this post.
So can you tell me a good reason that we should kick people out rather than make it easier to become a legal citizen?
Because there's a process in place, and regardless of how shit it is, that's the process, and encouraging people to illegally cross the border by granting citizenship isn't the solution. If anything, it will simply encourage more people to take the dangerous journey. It's the system for legal immigration that needs to be changed.
