Yet another show on the list of "could have been great, buuuuutt"
Honestly, the show was pretty good. What hurt it were a lot of moments that fell flat. I guess the fact that it's good makes the bad, and not so great parts stick out more. Some of it's because of meh acting, bad directing, or too much camp. Some of it's the lower budget CG.
"It's basically a really long movie, which is why we're talking about it on Half in the Bag."
Holy hell, that's actually pretty spot on.

Man, I'm never gonna get my VCR fixed. They're only open for an hour most days, and I always have to work through Turnsday
Watched and really really enjoyed it. Like said its like a stretched out movie but without it being stretched too long. Netflix did well on funding this one because i hope it will get a another season.
Go watch it, in short.

what.
it had great acting, great directing, almost no camp. CGI was bleh but it barely scratched the show
I'm on episode 4 and does the highschool drama end up going anywhere? I can't stand this Degrassi bullshit and Steve is cliche as fuck and it makes me want to drop it but I want to know what came out of the wall

It gets way better. I thought the same as you too but just keep going to the end and you will be glad you did.

I thought it was really fantastic except I found the final episode fairly anticlimactic.

Potential spoilers? I'll put it in spoiler just in case
[sp]Steve is the best, I hope he gets more screen time next season. That actor is very charming imo[/sp]

I feel that it really wrapped up everything really well.
Oh fuck at episode 5 they're playing Elegia.
It's supposed to be super serious but all I can think of is "this isn't MGSV" and I can't stop laughing even though this is super serious. It doesn't help that Jonathan looks like Norman Reedus
I really like how symbolic the music choices are of the scene.
Didn't enjoy the last ep because [sp] supposed death of 11 was really hamfisted and felt like it was there simply for "11 ded, sad moment now"[/sp] Besides that it was a really enjoyable show, but I hope they don't make S2 or at least not a direct sequel as S1 ended so well.

It made sense though, [sp]killing that thing seems like it would take a godlike amount of energy, seeing as gunfire couldn't even phase it.[/sp]

I don't agree with any of this except for the acting, I find it to be pretty bad too. It makes sense though, they needed a bunch of kids and it's hard to find good child actors.

It wrapped everything up, yes, but I thought it all happened way too fast, especially compared to the very slow pace of the rest of the episodes.
The only way I could see a second season working out would be to do an anthology series. It would fit with the 80's theme too, since stuff like Creepshow, Twilight Zone: The Movie, and the Halloween series (at least for the first 3) all were anthology movies.

i agree, though i haven't been able to pinpoint why. which is kinda frustrating

[sp]I think it's because it ends pretty much how you expect it to. They rescue Will, the monster is killed by Eleven by also sacrificing herself, Doctor Brenner is killed by the monster, everyone forgets all of it and everything else is wrapped up by another trope or is otherwise uninteresting (like how it turns out Steve is with Nancy instead of Johnathan). It's kind of the reason I actually like the ending, because while the rest of the story takes what would be normal and twists the shit out of it, the ending is exactly the opposite, normal all the way through which provides a nice contrast to the rest of the series.[/sp]

[sp]I mean it's hinted she's still alive in the other dimension along with the monster.[/sp]
Watched this after seeing them like it during the first few minutes of this review, it was excellent. Most shows like this are episodic which limits the potential of an interesting plot, but this was one big coherent story, it was excellent.

I know it made sense but the execution was really disappointing and rushed
And [sp]Bullets didn't phase it but teens with a gun and a baseball bat did[/sp]
[sp]Bullets made it flinch, so did the bat, the only thing that ever hurt it was the bear trap and fire.[/sp]

you should put that in spoiler tags
if there isnt a season 2 where [sp]the baby of the monster comes out of will's stomach and L somehow rematerializes somewhere i'll be sad[/sp]
I thought this show was 11 episodes for some reason so I was expecting episode 8 to be a false ending where it's not over yet since things are left unresolved.
I liked it. I like that Steve becomes a better character but it still bugs me that he looks like one of my friends so every time I he does something shitty I think "damnit Tyler, why are you being such an asshole."
I wish they didn't show the monster so much, they should have cleverly hidden it like they did the xenomorph in Alien. When they show it so much in the later episodes, it just ruins my suspension of disbelief since the CG is clearly on a TV budget despite them only needing to make one monster.
Also I think the [sp]upside down is an alternate reality where nuclear war happened. The monster is a product of radioactive fallout since they look for it using a geiger counter. They also mentioned that the atmosphere is toxic but I think they just mean that the air has radioactive fallout[/sp]
