Probably because the original was made from parts gleaned from one.

Wasn't the force largely seen as some hokey old religion that only hermits and monks cared about in the original films? In RotJ Darth Vader is openly mocked for believing in the force, and Han Solo immediately writes it off as superstition.

I get that a lot of the people working on the new Star Wars films have a lot of reverence for the old films, but I don't think that should really extend to the characters in the films.

well if you grew up with parents that believed it, have a force user with a staff, and mon mothra has personally seen the jedi age, you too would believe it. plenty of random people didn't believe in it till they saw it with their own eyes. In the battlefront book, the main character runs into vader himself and sees him as a demon who can magically pick up people and thrash them around, only after does he start to believe the force is real.
