According to sanitising water brand Aquaint, more than half (51%) of people use the same tongs for uncooked meats and cooked meats when barbecuing. Additionally, more than a quarter admit to not washing their hands between touching raw meat, vegetables and other barbecue utensils.
Furthermore, research carried out from Aquaint has shown that only six in 10 Brits wash their hands regularly when hosting a barbecue.
Bola Lafe, managing director for Aquaint, said: “We were staggered to find that hand hygiene seems to drop off the radar when it comes to the British barbecue. It appears that rough-and-ready diners decide to dodge the dangers and hope for the best, rather than taking the time to wash their hands before eating or preparing food for family and friends.”
As you might expect, the NHS claims that cases of food poisoning double over the summer months when the barbecue season is in full swing.
Meanwhile, food.gov.uk shows that 28% of us do not check that burgers and sausages are thoroughly cooked all the way through before consumption, while another 32% are even less cautious when serving chicken.
Lafe continued: “Worryingly, a survey by the Food Standards Agency found that 73% of chickens sold through retail channels tested positive for the presence of campylobacter, while our own research has shown that the average hand can carry up to 10 million bacteria, which can easily be transferred to food and other people.”
I didn't know Brits were such lousy BBQ cooks! Get it together, lads... :v:
Why are you titling your threads like this
Also, may I just say, as an argentine who considers grilled meat as a third language... that your BBQs not only horrify me, but also, bad weather *never* stopped us from having a big, fat, properly grilled flank steak. Don't be afraid to get a little wet, lads!

Its hard for them to get experience with a BBQ when its always raining there
As an Australian I find that disgusting.

Same. I assume you guys and your "barbies" are a lot better than the Brits, yes?

As one from Ohio, land of the clear sky-downpours, I've never been stopped by rain either, also dang Brits, wash your hands and utensils
We need some aussies to come here.

It's BBQ weather maybe 4 days of a whole year, we really do not have time to practice.
i clean my hands with the buns of people attending that I don't like

Why would you want to? People only barbecue over here to enjoy the sun while they have friends or family round
[editline]12th August 2015[/editline]
We have perfectly good ovens inside for when it's raining
The food is always secondary at a British barbecue; the main reason to own one is so that you have an excuse to get drunk and burn things in the summer.
how did they find enough bbq's to run a survey on?

Not with this attitude, you won't...
My parents don't use different tongs between uncooked and cooked meat.
All this 'hygiene' rubbish... honestly.
I never cared too much beyond 'wash my hands when I can see dirt on them' and take a shower once a day every evening.
Tell you what... I NEVER GET ILL
EVER.
AT ALL.
Wanna know why? Because I was ill a lot when I was younger... you build up an immune system.
Slightly undercooked chicken? 3 times reheated rice? All good.

If I'm hosting a bbq and I'm cooking, I'll wash my hands before I start, but once I get going, I don't really fuss too much. Our ancestors managed just fine all that time ago, and it's not like I fully hold the meat in my hands, I usually use tongs to pick it all up.
nutty, one thing I never fuck with is chicken. That shit will make you as ill as you've ever been. The only meat I'm paranoid about is chicken (I'd be paranoid about pork too but I don't eat it that much). Also reheating rice 3 times in a row is just asking for a nasty stomach bug.

I just make sure the chicken is white all the way through, that's good enough. I hate it when you get chicken at restaurants and it's like a piece of rubber.
Rice is only really a concern apparently when there are slow changes in temperature involved. If you cool it down before you fridge it and nuke it in the microwave completely, it's fine.

BBQs tend to be difficult to start when its bucketing down.

I don't even have two sets of tongs. The fire's so fucking hot it doesn't matter, wave the damn thing over the coals a few times and you'll be fine.
My parents don't use different tongs between uncooked and cooked meat.
I use the same tongs throughout the cooking, I figure touching the meat multiple times with the tongs would heat them up enough to kill any germs on them.
Though I would never touch a fully uncooked piece of chicken with them then pick up a cooked piece.

We frequently use coal BBQ's here. Which general don't work well under a roof.
Honestly, I'm not surprised by this when I know a lot of people who store cooked and uncooked meat on the same shelf of their fridge, cut stuff on the same chopping board with the same knife, don't ensure their hands are clean after handling raw meat and don't even check if their meat is fully cooked.
This type of hygiene just isn't taught to anyone and with a BBQ it just all goes out of the window, everyone in my family who has hosted one however has always used two sets of utensils, one for handling uncooked and another for the cooked/cooking. Hell most of the time the metal tongs are left on/in the BBQ so they are hot.
For those who use 2 sets of utensils for handling uncooked and cooked meat... I think you guys completely forgot about this:

You do realize you can use just 1 set of utensils, clean them and use them again as many times as you like, right...? :v:

No wonder there's a hygiene problem going on... come on guys, put some effort into it!
Or just stick them in the embers
who cares we've all just been told in the north west that there's parasites in our drinking water. fuck that get me the biggest vimto you can muster
Bbq is mostly for gathering outside in the sun and drinking i never really considered that the food is the main event

ah, my local new site was a laugh when this was announced

To be honest I don't use the tongs to put things on the grill. I'll wash my hands, prepare the meat, then I'll place them by hand (because I'm not a bitch) and get to grilling and use the tongs on the meat as I go along. Since I don't like having nasty stuff on my hands ever, (meat juice is sticky, fuck that) I tend to wash them when the meat's grilling.
Honestly I don't see the big issue with the hygiene though, this sounds like a lot of crying over small shit. If nobody dies of e.coli then I guess you did it right.
oh no 10 million bacteria on your hands! Sanitize everything, quickly!
