Chris Christie hits new approval rating low, is the least popular governor in the United States
Gov. Chris Christie's job approval rating dropped to 15 percent in a Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday, the worst rating for any governor in any state surveyed by the university in 20 years.
The latest poll puts Christie in a league of his own in New Jersey as well. He had been tied with former Democratic Gov. Brendan Byrne for the lowest job approval rating of 17 percent. The poll released Wednesday said 81 percent of registered New Jersey voters disapprove of the job Christie is doing as governor. He does not have much support within his own party, either, with 58 of Republicans disapproving, according to the poll.
Quinnipiac noted that in more than 20 years of polling, Christie recorded the worst approval rating. The university conducts surveys in Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Iowa, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and Virginia.
The guy fuckin' deserves it, he's gutted a lot of public programs.
He also shut down a bridge. Chris "Close them all Big or Small" Christie.
And the two candidates to replace him in 2017 are a corrupt fraudster and Goldman Sachs stooge. New Jersey sure has it good.

he's responsible for the New Jersey Higher Education Student Assistance Authority the scummiest, most inhumane farce dressed up as an aid program ever conceived.
go on, google it, just have a trashbag available.
Who the hell liked Chris Christie in the first place? He's like a caricature of a fat, sleazy, corrupt politician.

My stepmother likes him but because she's from New Jersey and generally stupid
As a fat piece of shit, fuck that fat piece of shit.
That 15% approval rating is no joke either. I don't know a single person here who likes Christie. He's gone and fucked everyone right in the ass at every opportunity. And not even in a Trump-like "hey, I'm gonna fuck you in the ass, but it's the best fucking, it'll be a great, great ass-fucking. You better believe it, everybody knows I'm the best at fucking you in the ass. You're gonna love being fucked in the ass, we're going to Make Your Ass Fucked Again!" It's just a plain old "yeah, I'm getting paid for this, I don't care."
The best joke is that the gubernatorial campaigns going on are basically "I'm not Trump, I'm not Christie, so yeah, vote for me, it can't get any worse."

My mom likes him. She lives in California. She has never lived in NJ.

His predecessor was similarly unpopular (and was pretty much all of those things you listed minus the fat part) and his first term was a lot better than his second, mind you that's not a particularly difficult feat for anyone pull off, so what you're asking is pretty much equivalent to "why did anyone like Nixon prior to Watergate?" (again, minus the fat part).
According to Harry Enten he's the 5th least liked american governor in history.

America really has gone to shit on almost every single level in the last decade, hasn't it?
That's really sad. The optimistic, friendly, welcoming America I visited as a kid is gone.

Things just haven't been the same in this country since 9/11.

New Jersey governors have a long history of being from NYC banks or business tycoons.
IIRC Corzine didn't even really live in New Jersey, he owned an apartment in Jersey City for the sake of being able to run for governor, the majority of his time was spent in New York.

All he lacks is a cigar and a thin mustache.

We elected in him in 2009 because he wasn't Corzine. He was making generally good promises and wanted to help public programs.
Flash forward to the end of his first term, he'd done all of nothing and actually made some public programs worse. I guess Republican voters thought he just hadn't had time to do what he set out to do, so he got reelected and then boondoggled NJ with bridgegate and gutting more public programs.
He's a sleazebag, through and through.

Pretty much why we elect any governor here in NJ.
This is why Murphy will win this year.
And then whatever Republican runs against him in 2021 will win
and so forth

We're the shitting bucket for New York, basically.

to be fair, taft only got that way because he spent a lot on programs that the state desperately needed such as roads, schools, jobs and economic reforms, and had to raise taxes for that. he left office with a budget surplus and the state in pretty great shape, it was his successive governors who defunded and unrolled a bunch of that and now we have bad schools and bad roads again. also as a centrist he pissed off the far right for not standing up for gun rights and stomping abortion clinics, and pissed off the left for reintroducing the death penalty.
also he was convicted of campaign fund abuses which is hillarious today all things considered
