YAKIMA, Wash. —
Despite banning the sale, growing and processing of legal marijuana, the Yakima City Council is seeking tax money from the upcoming pot industry.
The Yakima Herald-Republic reports the city council voted unanimously Friday to seek state tax revenue raised by businesses in cities that do allow legalized marijuana. Yakima joined a letter by the Association of Washington Cities asking the state to share recreational marijuana taxes with cities.
In case anyone was wondering how greed would factor into this.
How about no.
Too bad you cannot have both.
You can't make it 'illegal'/ban and then expect to get money. This isn't the land of both ways. Where every politician is visited by a magical genie who grants wishes.
i think if they want to ban it, they can, but they shouldn't recieve any tax revenue from it since they aren't contributing at all.
kind of thought that more people east of the cascades would've been all over legal pot since there's enough farmland over there to make some good money growing it
That's pretty damn dumb. I hope they don't see a single dime of the revenue
Genius, why hasn't anyone thought about it before? Just tax "criminal" industry! Surely nothing will go wrong and it's entirely plausible.
So wait, they wants to ban it in their city, but still wants the tax revenue from surrounding cities? What kind of logic is that?
That's hilarious. Almost sad, really.
Drug dealers in that area are probably happy they'll have business again :v: so in essence the city is fucking themselves over with a rusty spork and expecting a reach around in the form of tax revenue
while it's dumb, it doesn't look like they've banned possession, which means that their residents will likely be contributing financially to industries around the state instead of within their own, meaning that they're losing potential revenue and would like a portion of what their own residents are spending
doesn't stop the fact that it still would just be more efficient and effective to tax it themselves in town

marijuana is taxed in many states where it it illegal
the idea is they bust your friendly neighborhood weed dealer and then they get to charge him with tax evasion in addition to possession with intent
the sad part is this actually happens in the south, where there are dry counties and cities that still take state-funds generated from alcohol revanue

That's fucking horrible. I feel embarrassed knowing that the state of FL probably does this too...

Hardly a "tax" in any sense of the word. More of a "surcharge." (But I guess what's the difference. :v:)

can you actually get these, or do they bust you for getting these since, you know

They still have business, you can probably get better deals from buying from someone you already frequently do business with.

Unless they are licensed to sell it though (not likely) I think it makes more sense from a buyers perspective to go to a legal dealer.
GGWP nice try Yakima. That place sucks. Honestly eastern wa is the reason weed took so long to get legalized in the first place.

as if it couldn't get any worse.

Apparently there's a tax office somewhere, and the only people that actually buy them are stupid kids looking for cool edgy 420 shit to own, and the tax office couldn't care less 'cause it's more money to the state.
There is a constitutional question to be asked here: does the law require self-incrimination in order to comply, in violation of the Fifth Amendment?
No one likes Yakima anyways. It was a shithole before, and it'll always be one.

It's more of a "the stamp makes it legal to own, but to get the stamp, you must prove you have the product, and in doing so youve also proved you have the product without the stamp." It's like trying to get your car inspected after its already past due, you have to illegally drive your car before it can be legal again.
Yakima is probably the shittiest city I've been to.

Tennessee has/had such a stamp tax and used it on drug dealers; the "Crack tax" (that's its article on Wikipedia, no joke) came out in 2005, and had been ruled unconstitutional as of 2007... but Wikipedia and the rest of the easily-searched internet got bored of it sometime before the state supreme court decided if it was constitutional or not, so I'm not sure what happened since.
wants money from a source it isn't contributing to because it's still a part of the greater whole
I'd bet the politicians responsible are the type that'd cry out about how obama or other politicians are socialists
