The verdict was just delivered so the information is a bit thin on the ground, but I'm not the only one who's angry and disappointed at what happened.

this has a summary of the recent developments. The rest is in the main article, but not all the info is on it.
You're going to have to give some background information, and an entire Wikipedia article isn't going to be any more of a summary.
She's one of the two strongmen (strong woman) who are a major political force here, she heads up one of the largest political parties in the south, the AIADMK. The elections are usually a two-horse race run between her and the other strongman, Karunanidhi, the leader of the DMK party. There are a bunch of smaller political outfits but are only relevant when it's time to get enough seats in the legislative assembly to form a government. They can't win the elections on their own.
I would be understating things when I say that politics here is so rotten it's impossible to be a good man or idealist in the political scene. Either you get forced out of the arena through intimidation or sometimes murder, or you become as rotten as the rest of the individuals in the political arena. This is not to say that we're completely free of honest people - they're just totally drowned out by the large-scale corruption that you see here. Entire districts are traded around like fiefs between leaders jockeying for a position of power in the echelons of ruling parties.
A small addendum; to be a politician here in theory commands great respect. Unfortunately all of this respect happens to be only of the crooked kind. Politicians (even the lowly members of the legislative assembly) carry great weight - to be one enables a smooth road wherever you go and in anything you do. This can also be abused to a ludicrous extent if you fancy lining your pockets - it's the equivalent of running a protection racket, all you need to do is snap your fingers and tell somebody you need this done, or else.
And in addition to all this, the police force is nearly completely in the pockets of the political leaders. The loyalties of each individual cop can be traced back to the one or the other large party. There are fence sitters who show their loyalty to the party which happens to be in power at the moment and will happily switch back when the other party wins the elections. Again, there are honest cops - one of my relatives is on the force, an inspector. The problem is, the average cop is only interested in how much he can get by way of bribes and protection money. Money which political outfits can provide in ridiculous amounts.
This woman stole the better part of $2 billion over the period of her crooked career. The assets which were seized when she got convicted this time around were hardly a tenth of the purported fortune she has stowed away in offshore accounts.
reposting from the last thread I made.
People actually got enough evidence this time to salt her away for life in prison, but the corruption of the judicial system ensured that she got away again. And of course, it's routine for politicians to dismiss all accusations made against them as being false anyway. What can I say? justice is dead. The big fish always escape and the small ones are left holding the baby.
If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.
Who?? All of this is brand new to me so i dont really understand
That thread title is really undescriptive
How do you guys not know about this? Does nobody else watch the Indian news on TV every night?
You've got to be a little more descriptive with your news, man.
You need to make people interested in order to get them to read the article. By making the thread vague and non-descriptive, people are just going to skip it.
so the leader of one of the biggest political parties in india is corrupt as fuck and nothing is ever going to be done about it?

Pretty much this. Between herself and that old man who runs the other large party here, they've plundered everything from this state and driven it to ruin through their constant feuding, and their underlings aren't far behind either.
The pathetic part is that it's come to the point where dissent itself is being suppressed. Open your mouth and say anything about our beloved leaders offline or online for that matter and you might find a group of goons, er, I mean party workers, or even the police on your doorstep thanks to flagrant misuse of the laws.
