Tropical Cyclone Marcia is slowly tracking towards Central Queensland and is due to make landfall as a category five system on Friday morning.
It is due to hit St Lawrence at 9:00am and the 170 locals have been asked to evacuate, as well as locals in Clairview, Ogmore and Marlborough.
Police Constable Matt McKinnon said it was in the best interest of locals who had homes built before 1984 to go to shelters.
"The pre-1984 homes are not structurally sound to take that amount of wind gusts," he said.
A very destructive central core of the cyclone could generate gusts up to 295 kilometres an hour, the Bureau of Meteorology warned.
Coastal and island communities between Mackay and Burnett Heads will begin to experience destructive winds overnight.
Once the cyclone makes landfall it is due to track south to reach Moura and Biloela as a category two system about 9:00pm, some 12 hours after first crossing land.
A cyclone watch has been issued for areas between Bowen to Double Island Point, extending inland to Blackwater, Moura, Biloela, Monto, Taroom, Mundubbera, and Murgon.
I've got family up in Mackay and I hope they won't be touched by this, but a Category 5 is pretty dangerous
My family isn't visiting me for my 18th birthday this weekend because they're worried the storm is gonna close off roads :(

Luckily the house they live in is ~130 years old and built like a tank, traditional Queenslanders are tough houses to crack.
i remember when a bushfire moved through my town and we were forced to evacuate. fun times.
Up to 295km/h... holy shitballs!
I didn't plan on going out on my birthday anyway. Also had to board up two windows because we got them replaced but we never got around to getting one of those latchy things for them yet.
They better not fuck up and not let enough water out of the dams like last time in Brisbane.
Goodluck Queenslanders!
Will this hit the border of QLD/NSW?

It's expected to reach near Brisbane as a tropical low, if anything expect some rain in tweed heads and surrounding areas
Category 5 system, as in Hurricane category 5?
If so, holy shit.

I don't know if it's really different but I've never understood the differences between a Cyclone, Typhoon or Hurricane. I just thought they're all the same
In other news the cyclone missed Mackay, hit gladstone instead unfortunately
I'm based an hour north of Brisbane... it's bucketing down here, but the media is overplaying the situation so much that people are completely losing their shit, it's frustrating. More than likely we're going to end up with a LOT of rain and a fair bit of wind once it dissipates, but people think the whole coast is about to go underwater.
Won't be even a hint as bad as 2011's downpour - 500-600mm in 5 or 6 hours. THAT was bad, but it was only a single day event too.
I'm running around like a mad idiot patching leaks in my goat's house and trying to get the horses into better shelter though, that's what worries me most. We have a LOT of giant dead trees around our house that we were JUST about to get taken down when this all started. Going to leave all my cars at work I think, not taking a chance - we've had a tree branch smash through our roof and into the garage when I was younger, don't want that again haha.
Ahhhhh

There is no difference, you're right. It's simply different names given for the same weather event.
It has not stopped pissing down rain since 10am here in Ipswich, starting to worry a little for my nan and pop because last time we had heavy rainfall, both roads in their streets were flooded and they could've been trapped if they didn't evaucate in time
Nevermind shows over. Apparently all is great.

They're all the same weather event. They're just named differently in different latitudes/longitudes. Typhoons generally seem to be the strongest. They're categorized a bit differently in each area. And Cyclones spin the other direction because Australia is upside down.
Almost couldn't go to work today - all the main roads out of my street are flooded, along with most heading into town. I just eeked through a shallower floodwater and had to turn my 10 minute work drive into a 30 minute drive out around the motorway and back into town some other way. Got some trees coming down, and the rain is just insane. Our dam has overflowed considerably and there are waterfalls and rivers where there never have been before haha.
Aaaaand I have to go out into it again for work, joy!
