On the launch days of the WiiU it had to download a multiple gigabyte update because shit like miiverse and other online functionality weren't on the shipped consoles themselves. It took several hours and if you unplugged the power the WiiU would brick.
It wasn't the greatest.

Only took me 50 minutes, and I think newer units don't have this. Also it's not a good idea to power off a system when updating for any system.

Obviously, but a console shouldn't brick either if it loses power during a bigass update. Plus, accidents happen. Comes unplugged, power goes out, shit happens. if my brand spankety new console said it was gonna take 50+ minutes to download an update the idea of just unplugging it would cross my mind in the very least.
the wii u doesn't brick.
there's a way to reset it to re-download it if i remember right
