YEVPATORIA, Ukraine — An anti-submarine boat may have been the first casualty of the Russian incursion into Crimea, but it was hardly an act of violence, much less war: The Russian navy sank one of its own, junked vessels to create an obstacle, a Ukrainian official said Wednesday.
Ukraine Defense Ministry spokesman Lt. Col. Alexei Mazepa said Russian sailors pulled the anti-submarine vessel Ochakov out of a naval junkyard and sank it in the straits that connect the Black Sea with a body of water known as Donuzlav Lake. He said the act was intended to prevent Ukrainian navy ships from leaving a nearby base and going to sea.
The sinking was the latest in a series of moves by Russian naval forces in the area that were jangling the nerves of Ukrainian officers.
Earlier in the week, the commander of the Russian Black Sea fleet, Adm. Alexander Vitko, visited Ukraine’s South Base, according to the deputy base commander, Capt. Viktor Shmiganovsky.
“He asked me to invite all the officers and suggested that we collectively take up the Russian military allegiance oath and become part of the Black Sea fleet … promising good pay and a bright future,” Shmiganovsky said in an interview. “He insisted we do that to help protect Ukraine from extremist gangs.”
The officer said his boss, the base commander, retorted: “Comrade admiral, we didn't see any extremist gangs here until you came with your men.” He said the admiral left “in a rage.”
^Ship in question^
Poor ship.
Later on that is going to be a bitch to remove.
A ship was sank.
this is pretty jaw-dropping if the Russians actually did this.
Is it just me or does it look like ships could still get past the wreckage?
I think that might just be the greatest, albeit Pyrrhic victory the Russian Navy has achieved in some time now.
correction: the admiral left with butthurt and third degree burns
So they scuttle their own ship so that ukranians can't get through?
Can't they like, sail around it? Even if the sandbar is higher on either side...
how does this help protect ethnic Russians in Crimea?

It helps blockade the Nazi naval fleet.

It blocks the fairway.
I want to know what Ukrain plans for a scuttle rebuttal
"Contact, left side! We have to stop those Nazis!"
"Sir that's a fishing trawler and an oceanographic craft"
"DO AS I SAY ENSIGN"

Thousands of life-boats
Damn those pesky, well equipped crimean self defence forces.
Ukraine needs to fucking grow a pair, they can get away with more than sitting in their bases doing fuck all.
They should make a break for it, it doesn't matter if they ram a couple of ships accidentally. If the Russians shoot it just means the international community takes a harder line.

I'd imagine that the ship was sunk in the only bit of the channel deep enough for most major vessels to leave from. There's probably sand bars or the rest is too shallow to go through without fucking up or beaching your ship.

If it comes to shooting Ukrainians will die and America has made it clear they don't want to solve this using their military. If it comes to shooting it would be seriously bad for Ukraine.

They're used to being submissive.

It's a disused ship that wasn't operational.
Basically they flooded a piece of scrap to stop the fascists from escaping.

Russia can repair a couple of ships. Ukraine can't.

Blow them up instead.

Russia isn't going to invade eastern Ukraine because of a navigational incident.
Honestly I'd be willing to risk getting shot at if it meant giving the finger to Russia.

gotta sink more ships

They should totally do it. Stuff the oldest and shittiest ship with explosives, set it on course and evacuate. Then claim accident.

Well you can always come to Ukraine and try if you'd be willing... :v:

There would still be too much debris blocking the port.
Best they could do the piss off Russia would be scuttle their ships so Russia can't use them.
I wonder how far they will go to make sure no one interrupts/stops what they are doing. I know sinking a junker ship is pretty tame. But what else are they capable of doing?
gotta sink more ships
but how many ships is too many?

All of 'em, Black sea fleet is ancient junk anyway.
