The accident happened just after 6:30 p.m. local time, The Associated Press reported, citing police records. The Texas Giant rollercoaster debuted as an all-wooden ride in 1990, and reopened in 2011 redesigned with a steel track, ABC News affiliate WFAA reported. It rises 14 stories high and boasts "the steepest drop of any wooden coaster at 79 degrees," Six Flags Over Texas said on its website. "The new ride also has a record-breaking bank of 95 degrees, steeper than any other wooden coaster on the planet."

The incident occurred shortly after 6:30 Friday evening. Witnesses, like the one below, say the restraints came undone, and the woman simply vanished off the towering ride. Others say people on the ground directed rescue workers to her location. On Facebook, a woman who said she was next in line to ride the Texas Giant wrote that “the lady whose seat I was about to get into on the Giant wasn’t there when the red train came back!! Seriously! People in front row screaming when they came back that their mom was gone. We waited about 50 mins & now kids are freaking out.” Our Tanya Eiserer spoke with Carmen Brown of Arlington, who says she was next in line to ride the Texas Giant behind the woman who fell to her death this evening. She told Tanya she witnessed the woman being strapped into the ride. She was sitting next to her son. The woman, said Brown, “basically tumbled over and you just see her son [go], ‘Ahhh.’ They didn’t secure her right. One of the employees from the park — one of the ladies — she asked her to click her more than once, and they were like, ‘As long you heard it click, you’re OK.’ Everybody else is like, ‘Click, click, click.’ Hers only clicked once. Hers was the only one that went down once, and she didn’t feel safe, but they let her still get on the ride. …
http://abcnews.go.com/US/flags-texas-woman-dies-riding-texas-giant-rollercoaster/story?id=19720139 http://www.dallasnews.com/news/metro/20130719-breaking-news-woman-killed-while-riding-texas-giant-roller-coaster-six-flags-confirms.ece [editline]3:33[/editline]
She blatantly disregarded all safety features Calling it
"Be ready for that lawsuit" yeah, why are people here so stupid like this?
She blatantly disregarded all safety features Calling it
i updated the op, it turns out she didn't (according to a witness)
She blatantly disregarded all safety features Calling it
Sounds more like employee incompetence.
I'm not going on Texas Giant - It isn't safe!
close and reopen the ride, no-one will notice
close and reopen the ride, no-one will notice
Avatar is so fitting it's not even funny

I hate those lap restraints on wooden coasters, they are so uncomfortable. I also don't understand why the majority of coasters don't have adjustable seatbelts. Those cost only a few hundred bux extra per train and will prevent these kind of accidents.
Or it could be both? All it takes is the perfect circumstances for something to go wrong. Maybe there was something wrong with the first lockdown tooth on the gear. Maybe it was worn down. Could be a lot of things. Obviously someone is at fault at six flags.
I do have to say I rode this ride on the 18th. YESTERDAY. I garentee you she was NOT secured correctly. Ohh and I hope they wont close the ride tomorrow because I'm going back. Also if y'all are interested here's some photo's of the ride wile On top of the Oil Derik. Final destination and stories like this stopped me from ever going on roller coasters again.
That attendant who did her restraint must feel awful.
Christ I've been on that ride before
That attendant who did her restraint must feel awful.
If I had a job like this I would always be paranoid about making sure that everyone is secured properly. And if someone would complain I would check it double and triple.
That attendant who did her restraint must feel awful.
I don't think I exaggerate when I say this is something they'll think about every day for the rest of their lives.
On an unrelated note, it's funny... I've never gone to the top level of the Oil Derik. :v: (Not out of fear. I just never seem to get to it when i'm at the park doing stuff)
Theirs acculy 3 Levels. And a fun note back in the old times their was a slide on the lower level of the Oil Derik. As seen in the into of "The Banana Splits". And normally they only have the lowest top floor open (lvl 2) and rarely have the tippy top level open due to people throwing stuff off. [editline]20th July 2013[/editline]
Christ I've been on that ride before
I was on it twice yesterday. ooooooo [editline]fdgnfg[/editline] And by judging by her kid not falling out also ONLY HER restraint was effected meaning : 1) She was over weight and it could not go down all the way. 2) She did not want it sucked up all the way on her. Both are really her fault, but as they normally do they PRESS down on the restraints and PULL back up. And the only way them NOT to do that is if she is being a whine bitch or just fat. And the reason the key words above are bolded are because they fucking mean business when they check them. Nor have I ever left station with a little breathing room Its alwase been "tight" or OHH MY GAWD I CANT BREATH.
I have no reason to think that witness is lying, so I think it's going to come down to why the restraint didn't click down all the way. I wonder if she was large, they say everything is bigger in Texas even the cows and women. Was the attendant reluctant to push down on the restraint because she was protruding in an awkward fashion? Maybe he was high. I knew people who worked at amusement parks and they'd do shit like drop acid at work.
People in front row screaming when they came back that their mom was gone
:( [editline]19th July 2013[/editline] Shit like this always makes me tear up god dammit
i went to the park about a month ago, but the last time i rode the texas giant was back before they added steel rails, so probably about 6 years ago, and it was uncomfortable as fuck. probably the most uncomfortable ride in the whole park, very jerky, so i just haven't ridden it since

I don't even miss it because they removed it to bring in some swings that spin and go higher than anything else in the park. With the new revamp it was about on par with Runaway Mountain but without the darkness.
How awful it would be to arrive at the end for those kids. It's scary thinking that they were completely oblivious to what happened during the ride. It'll be a new fear that will inhabit the back of my mind while riding roller coasters; not that the ride will crash but that someone I love might not make it back.
i dont ever remember riding the flashback, when did they close it?
Here recently like before spring break. Only thing left of it is a huge concrete slab. Also Review of the Swings. I ONLY would suggest it if your with a significant other. Anything other than that its gayyyyy.
My friend used to work this ride before he went to college. Scary stuff.
Poor attendant. Probably a student and under-trained. And I love how the articles don't even mention the lady's weight. In the video a witness says shes "heavy", so I speculate that shes fat as shit. Mainly because Arlington Texas is full of the fattest people in Texas, and fat people ride that roller coaster with problems. You can't make everything fat-proof. And when you do, they will bitch and moan about it even though its for safety reasons. Well the family can expect a good fat settlement from this one that's for sure. Especially when you have the attendant saying "one click is fine". If one click is not fine, they are in deep shit.
Does anyone honestly expect any less from amusement park rides? They simply aren't safe.

They don't newbies here work on the biggest and fastest. If your at Over Texas you will notice on their badge the "I work safely + Number of years they worked" And I've only seen those badges on the bigger rides. 2) Over Texas is the only Six Flags I know of and been too be so flexible with overweight people. 3) In fact McAllen is the fattest city in Texas. Only reason it seems Arlington is full of fat people is because Arlington is the biggest entertainment city in Texas. 4) False. This PDF is for Great Adventure in Jackson, NJ but I would susspect that it is followed over to all locations.
i updated the op, it turns out she didn't (according to a witness)
As long as it clicks once you are good to go, though. It's to accommodate people of different sizes, once it's locked its locked, no matter how many times it 'clicks'. Just because it clicks three times doesn't mean it's any stronger. I'm guessing she was over weight, and the added weight with the G-loads from a turn or two caused the lock to fail. It was probably going to fail eventually anyway, though, and this particular time was its breaking point
