Underweight 16 year old to be separated from mother and force fed by tube rules UK High Court
65 replies, posted
A 16-year-old girl who weighs just five-and-a-half stone will be forcibly fed through a tube after a High Court judge stepped in to save her from starving to death.
[...]
However, in a highly unusual move, the judge has now ordered the girl's temporary separation from her mother and authorised 'reasonable force' and sedation to be used in inserting the tube through her nostril.
[...]
'A' had emailed the judge from her hospital bed to object to the treatment, saying previous tube feeding was 'like torture' to her.

Christ. How would feeding somebody through their nose even work in the first place?
Aye it might be like torture but do you know what'll be even worse, feeling your body break down muscle in desperation as you die of starvation.

Your nose is connected to your throat, you put a tube through the nose, down the throat and into the stomach and pump in food paste or whatever it is.
However, A had emailed the judge from her hospital bed to object to the treatment, saying previous tube feeding was 'like torture' to her.
Criticising the doctors treating her, she said they 'don't understand me as a person'.
As a physician, I personally find it very hard to understand this sort of reaction.
Even an average doctor, hell, nursing staff, can easily, and practically painlessly insert a Ryle's tube into a child's stomach. I myself do it several times a week.
Whether or not you think it's torture has no bearing on if it actually is torture. Do you want your kid to live or die? this is the time you start asking blunt questions, because by golly, there's no point beating about the bush with fancy words.
In before the mother and daughter are both like proana as fuck, I'd bet my left nut on it.
Oh, to add something on; if Ryle's tube feeding fails, they will probably have to resort to TPN and insert nutrient solutions into the kid via her veins.

The article states that it's being done in order to send nutrients straight to her small intestine. Correct me if I'm wrong, but once food leaves the stomach and enters the intestinal tract, you can't vomit it back up because of a sphincter or something connecting the stomach to the small intestine.

In the event of intestinal obstruction for any reason however, vomiting of intestinal contents (feculent vomitus, as we tend to describe it) does occur.
I had a nose tube twice, though that was for sucking stomach contents out rather than putting them in (Woo, intestinal blockage!). Fair enough if it's needed, but I will say this:
They fucking suck. Couldn't really sleep, just passed out for a couple hours at a time whenever I got tired enough. Pain every time you swallow. Building taste of gunk in your mouth.
Best feeling in the world the second they're out, though.

Well, truth be told, it's often worth a little discomfort to help get cured at times :P
I've had one in me as well on a couple of occasions, so I can empathize.

Interesting. I've heard tubefeeding can be extremely unpleasant, I wonder if there are exceptions or if it's just rumor.
It could be like torture if the girl has an eating disorder, also

If just one god out there is real, I pray to them that "feculent vomiting" has nothing to do with feces.

My worst nightmare

Unfortunately, it does. And it isn't pleasant when it occurs.
I have a strong suspicion it does.
Also Christ on a bike, seriously this shit should not be happening in a country like this.

The actual insertion process is relatively painless. However, it will be uncomfortable to leave in for very long, and you often have to leave it in for several days when it is used.

All I can say is deal with it you anorexic idiot, you're gonna kill yourself unless they do this and they wont allow it. The faster she can get over her eating disorder the quicker they can remove the tube.

I thnk you're showing a lot of misunderstanding towards anorexia. It is a severe mental illness. It isnt a state of mind or a a choice, do you think any sane person would literally starve themselves to death, and still see themselves as fat while literally being skin and bones.

Its literally the same as telling someone to "get over" depression.

Some places, which I'll leave unnamed, intentionally make it as unpleasant as possible, whilst not being very gentle, to the point it's basically a form of torture in that it's forcefeeding. Trained medical professionals in hospitals, however will place it in as carefully and properly as possible, and will attempt to make it as comfortable as having a Ryle's tube can be, which I've never experienced, but is presumably moderately unpleasant, vaguely embarrassing yet far preferable to starvation.
That's 35 kg in the civilized world.
That's 35 kg in the civilized world.
Which makes it 77.1 lbs. in the only place that matters.
More like 77 pounds.
Wait holy shit 77 pounds?!
Force feeding is what they do to some prisoners in guantanamo bay prison
Mos Def, the rapper, tried it out to show how freaking horrible it is.

Man this is fucked up.
Also that's like only 30 less pounds than me, damn.
Was probably anorexia, we forcibly take care of other serious mental health disorders. It might be a nightmarish scenario and i can understand her mum being incredibly upset about it, but it's either that or she's gonna drop dead and lose her entire future.

And there's processes and treatment which will be given to her to help resolve it, I know its a serious thing but if she whines about having help forced on her then seriously there needs to be a degree of self realisation eventually pinging notice that its either accept the help or get screwed.
When help is being forced on you it should be ringing a bell that something is seriously wrong with you. I've had this happen to me and its tough as shit but it'll hit home and it'll hit fast.
I am skinny but no mental illness whatsoever and I am gaining pounds little by little, my dad had the same thing as me he got really skinny than got weight as he got older. Not sure if its a genetic thing or my metabolism I do eat a lot too. Also Oh god I feel bad but if you don't eat than that's very bad.
